CARVED CEDAR WOOD SANTOS DATING FROM 1994 TO 1996.PRICED TO SELL.Offered for bids is a beautiful polychromed cedar wood(as required in puertorrican tradition) Santos or Santo of the now deceased Puetorrican Master carved Jose Negron(1928-2009) SANTA MONICA, SAINT MONICA, SIGNED IN THE BOTTOM WITH THE NAME OF THE SANTOS, HIS SIGNATURE AND WERE IT WAS CARVED, COROZAL PUERTO RICO AND DATE TO 1994 TO 1996 WHEN I ACQUIRED THEM BACK THEN FROM JOSE NEGRON. all carved from one piece of cedar wood as expected. Jose Luis Negron was born in Corozal in 1928 to a farming family. Looking for a better life, the family moved to Brooklyn in 1946. Following his marriage and the birth of his son Neftali Negron and his ... morefamily returned to Corozal in 1962. In New York and Puerto Rico, Jose Negron made his living sewing carpets. It was his son Neftali who introduced Jose Negron to the art of carving santos and would prepare blocks of wood by drawing the silhouettes of figures for his father to carve. His santos have won many prizes and are part of the collections of the Museo de Arte de Ponce and the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture in San Juan. Jose Negron taught his nephew and two grand nieces how to carve. In 1996 the Bacardi Festival was dedicated to him and he won first price in the carving of Saint Anthony. In 1997 he obtained second prize on the carving of Juan Alejo de Arizmendi, in 1998 he obtained third prize in th el Cuarto Certamen de la Talla de San Juan Bautista. In 2005 he was recognized as a master carver by the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Jose Negron passed away in 2009. This Santo is hand carved from cedar wood and polychrome painted by Jose L. Negron. Jose Negron does not paint what would be the skin of the santos, those areas are left with the wood exposed in natural color. This piece was acquired directly from the artist. The body,
