RARE Estate Sale Find: Antique St. Peter Statue from Vatican, Rome
This beautiful statue. A replica of the famous statue of St. Peter sitting on a throne with the keys to the kingdom in his hand, in Saint Peters Basilica, the Vatican, Rome that pilgrims visit to kiss the feet of this apostle of Christ upon whose rock his church, The Catholic Church, was built, was obtained at the estate sale of a wealthy Italian lady in New York City. Her family said it had been in the family"forever" was handed down, believed to be from the late 1800's to early 1900's. It is made of metal, not sure if bronze or some other metal, it's 6 inches high, beautiful detail, engraved on its base on the front is Roma and S. Pietro and on the back is the word depositato(in italian means registered) which verifies that this statue was registered with the Vatican and sold as official memento long ago when registration ... morewas required. I am offering it at a low price hoping someone will treasure this rare and beautiful image of Saint Peter. Below is some history of the original statue that is in St. Peter's Basilica and for which this statue is a replication: For centuries this statue has been in existence. And quite a dispute once arose as to its real character and historic value. Its sculptor is unknown. One set of critics maintained, partly because of its sitting posture, and partly for other reasons, that it was an ancient Jupiter Capitolinus, renamed St. Peter and placed in position. Still others declared that it was a recast, made by Pope Leo the Great, to commemorate the deliverance of Rome from Attila. The famous archaeologist and antiquary, Lanciani, of Rome, settled the dispute by proving that it was an original work, cast as a portrait of St. Peter. In the library of the Vatican there was found an oval medallion of the first century, having engraved on it the profiles of St. Peter and St. Paul. The Crucifix is a beautiful 6 foot life-size figure of the crucified Jesus, and is located directly above the main altar. The miraculous crucifix is believed to have been the work of Pedro de Mena, who died in 1693, and the crucifix was given to the church by Father Diego de la Piedra Secadura, who had been born at Limpias in 1716. The crucifix is a meditation on the sufferings of Our Lord portraying Him in the final moments of His agony. Measuring six feet tall. The corpus is clothed with a loin cloth that is held in place with a rope. The feet are one atop the other and are pierced with a single nail. The index and middle fingers of both pierced hands are extended as though giving a final blessing. The face of Our Lord is of particular beauty, with its glass eyes looking toward Heaven so that, for the most part, only the whites of the eyes are visible. This very large(15 inches high) Very heavy, vintage bust of Saint Therese of Lisieux was purchased at an estate sale of a very wealthy Catholic lady in Westchester, New York. Her family said"she always had it" but I don't know the age, probably made in France but no markings. Its made of some composite to look and feel like stone, so strange that it really looks like no one else but Saint Therese so who ever made the mold must have been a very special artist, has a beautiful rose on the base"The Little Flower" on the flat bottom where it cant be seen, someone wrote their name. Estate Sale Find: Hand-carved hand-painted Mother Theresa Statue miniature ITALY
This exquisite. Hand carved, hand painted miniature statue of Mother Theresa was purchased at the estate sale of a wealthy Catholic lady in Westchester, New York. Her family said she bought it in Italy in 1997, it was a special statue made by the famous PEMA wood carvers of Italy(see information on this famous woodcarvers below) right after Mother Theresa died, it was only produced in a very limited edition, very hard to find, and not made since. On the bottom of the statue is the PEMA seal which states"Original PEMA Wood Carving" It is the most beautiful, life-like statue of Mother Theresa I have ever seen, in perfect condition, a very rare find and treasure, being sold at very reasonable price as PEMA statues go for hundreds of dollars in Italy and being a miniature which is much harder to carve with such detail, this statue costs ... moremore than much larger statues due to the difficulty in carving such a small piece. RARE Estate Sale Find: Dated 1916 Church Statue, 23" high, St Therese of Lisieux
This magnificent statue of St. Therese of Lisieux was purchased at an estate sale of a wealthy Catholic lady in Westchester. New York earlier this year. The statue is 23 inches high and weighs over 8 pounds, very beautiful face. It has engraved in it the maker and year of 1916. On the bottom of the statue is a piece of paper with typewritten note taped that says"I bought this 1916 Church statue of Saint Therese of Lisieux at an auction in 2011. It is marked on back'M. T. A. Company Inc 590, Modern Tuscany Art, Copywright 3L Sculpture 1916' I was told it was many years in Saint Bartholomew's Church in Norwich, New York" For its age it is in good condition, some paint loss, chips, etc. I have tried to show as much on photos but if you have any specific questions please ask, I am selling"as-is" since I can not ... moredescribe all defects but again it is in good condition, no breaks or repairs, I have not cleaned it, it is offered just as when I purchased it from the estate.
