Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. CONDITION: New. Never read. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Marcus Aurelius reigned from 161 AD to 180 AD. And was perhaps the only true philosopher-king in the history of the world. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. It is without a doubt an exceptional and superior strike. The obverse of the coin depicts the head of Roman Emperor Severus Alexander, depicted draped and with laureate crown; and the legend“IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG” M AVR SEV ALEXAND” of course refers to the Emperor’s full name. Marcus Aurelis Severus Alexander. The“M” is obviously the initial for“Marcus” AVR” is short for“Aurelian” V” as there is no“U” in Roman Latin. SEV” is short for“Severus” and these abbreviations are followed by“ALEXAND” short for“Alexander” The“IMP” preface to his name is an abbreviation for“Imperator” Imperator was originally a title or acclamation awarded to victori

DETAIL: This is a very handsome. And fairly rare silver antoninianus, struck at the city of Rome in 221 A.D. It is in very good condition relative to the state it“began life” in. What that means is that there is relatively little wear evident from circulation in ancient Rome. The coin is in much the same condition it was in when it was struck eighteen centuries ago. One can inspect the portrait of the emperor to appreciate just how fine the condition is, and how relatively little circulatory wear is evidence. It was well struck both front and back, the strike somewhat off center, the planchet(coin blank) slightly oblong. Nonetheless unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught most of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The coin was struck a bit off-center. The obverse a little bit low and too far right, the reverse just a little bit low and left of center. That coupled with the slightly irregular flan(coin edge) results in some of the legend on both obverse and
DVD Roman Emperor Constantine & The Cross Ancient Christianity Maxentius Milvian
Constantine and The Cross(1962) Starring: Cornel Wilde. Belinda Lee. Director: Lionello De Felice. DESCRIPTION: DVD: 120 minutes. The vast majority of this movie that centers on Constantine's personal life is pure fiction. However. That is not so bad; Gladiator" re-wrote history, too, but was nonetheless a great movie. And this movie does not fabricate history just to fabricate, but rather it does so with the objective of tying Constantine and Christianity together. One of the more notable scenes in which historical fact comes together with a fudging of Constantine's life is the arena scene. In this segment. Constantine jumps down into a pit where Christians are maliciously being slaughtered. Historically, the feeding-the-Christians-to-the-lions motif is right on. Under the emperor Galerius(ruled 305-311 A.D. shortly before Constantine ... moreascended to the throne) Christian persecution was at its height. While it is untrue that Constantine slew lions to save Christians, the arena scene nevertheless serves as an excellent depiction of incidents which really happened. The really notable quality of this movie lies in its portrayal of major historical happenings. Diocletian and Maximian really did abdicate the throne in 308. It is also true that his mother. Helena, was a Christian(although the details re: his relationship w/her in the movie are fictional) He did marry Fausta(although he had her and his eldest son Crispus put to death for treason in 326- long after the time period covered in this movie) The inclusion of Constantine's"divine vision" before his battle with Maxentius is essential; perhaps one of the defining moments in the entire history of Christianity. The actual battle itself is also given accurate treatment as Maxentius' cavalry was ambushed and trapped by Constantine's forces, just as the film claims. Overall it is well worth the time for anyone who is interested in Roman history, world history or the history of Christianity. CONDITION: Viewed once. Like New. PLEASE SEE

Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: 048629823X. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace ... moreand ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. NEW Following Hadrian 138AD Roman Emperor UK Wall Pantheon Tivoli 900-Room Villa
Following Hadrian: A Second-Century Journey Through the Roman Empire by Elizabeth Speller. DESCRIPTION: Published at $74.00] Hardback with Dust Jacket: 328 pages. Publisher: Oxford University Press; 2003) Hadrian. The great, but flawed, Roman Emperor, was an inveterate traveler, intellectual, and patron of the arts. He was determined to make his mark on posterity and left an unparalleled legacy of beautiful new cities and buildings throughout his vast empire and, of course, in Rome. Much of his inspiring architecture remains for today's travelers to marvel at, although some has disappeared without trace and is now the stuff of legend. But Hadrian was also melancholy, volatile, and utterly ruthless. He treated his wife with contempt and devoted himself to a beautiful boy whose sinister death, while they traveled in Egypt, plunged Hadrian ... moreinto despair; it changed his personality for ever and affected his ability to rule. Within two years. The man who had been one of the most peace-loving of emperors plunged his empire into a terrible, ill-judged, three-year war against Judea. Classicist Elizabeth Speller tells the story of the most powerful man on earth in the early second century against a background of his travels and intrigues. This was a man who had commissioned a dazzling construction program, from Hadrian's Wall in Britain and the extraordinary Pantheon in Rome, to his 900-room villa at Tivoli, works which represented the central themes of his rule: military domination, religious tolerance, and an extravagant lifestyle. Soundly based on original sources and archaeology, this compelling book throws new light on Hadrian and the Roman Empire of the second century. CONDITION: Light shelf-wear consistent with open shelf stock. Otherwise in New, never read condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. As well, the last ruler of the Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt, Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, was often depicted and described wearing fabulous emeralds mined from those same famous ancient mines. Romans thought that light-colored emeralds to be“unripe” believing that an emerald becomes darker as it matures.
