NEW Michelangelo Sistine Chapel Pope Julius 16thC Renaissance Italy Royal Court
Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 373 pages. Publisher: Penguin Books; 2003) ISBN: 0142003697. In 1508. Despite strong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter(though famed for his sculpture David) Michelangeo was reluctant to begin the massive project. Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling recounts the four extraordinary years Michelangelo spent laboring over the vast ceiling while the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. Battling against ill health, financial difficulties, domestic problems, the pope's impatience, and a bitter rivalry with the brilliant young painter Raphael, Michelangelo created scenes so beautiful that ... morethey are considered to be among the greatest masterpieces of all time. A panorama of illustrious figures converged around the creation of this magnificent work, from the great Dutch scholar Erasmus to the young Martin Luther. Ross King skillfully weaves them through his compelling historical narrative, offering uncommon insight into the intersection of art and history. CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished except VERY slight edge/corner wear and rubbing to the covers. Just the normal slight wear expected in a new book caused by the book being shelved next to others. Pope & Heretic Intellect vs Inquisition Renaissance Executing Scientists Bruno
The Pope and The Heretic: The True Story of Giordano Bruno. The Man Who Dared to Defy the Roman Inquisition by Michael White. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 234 pages. Publisher: Perennial. An Imprint of HarperCollins Publishers; 2003) ISBN: 0060933887. Giordano Bruno challenged everything in his pursuit of an all-embracing system of thought. This not only brought him patronage from powerful figures of the day but also put him in direct conflict with the Catholic Church. Arrested by the Inquisition and tried as a heretic. Bruno was imprisoned, tortured, and, after eight years, burned at the stake in 1600. The Vatican"regrets" the burning yet refuses to clear him of heresy. But Bruno's philosophy spread: Galileo, Isaac Newton, Christiaan Huygens, and Gottfried Leibniz all built upon his ideas; his thought experiments predate the work ... moreof such twentieth-century luminaries as Karl Popper; his religious thinking inspired such radicals as Baruch Spinoza; and his work on the art of memory had a profound effect on William Shakespeare. Chronicling a genius whose musings helped bring about the modern world, Michael White pieces together the final years; the capture, trial, and the threat the Catholic Church felt, that made Bruno a martyr of free thought. HCDJ Villas & Palaces of Europe Medieval Renaissance
Villas and Palaces of Europe by Adalbert Dal Lago. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 157 pages. Publisher: Paul Hamlyn; 1969) ISBN: 0600012352. The social background of an age had an important influence on the design of great houses. Thus the elegant but comparatively small Palladian villas of the Veneto were as much a product of sixteenth century Venetian society as the grand chateaux of the Loire were a reflection of the elaborate French court. In selecting examples of villas and palaces for this book. The author, Adalbert Del Lago has naturally made a very personal choice. Yet each example has a place in one of the currents of European architecture which makes it particularly interesting or significant. The author also takes advantage of the detailed captions which accompany the plates in order to describe the architectural details ... moreand to point out the sources and influences of each house. Palladio was the first European architect to seek and achieve an intimated relationship between a building and its landscape. Conceived as integrated elements, and it is the evolution of this idea which links and yet contrasts the magnificent villas and palaces described. The superb illustrations enable us to compare the Villa Rotonda, Chenoceaux, Fontainebleau, Longleat, and the Schonbrunn, with many other less well-known but equally elegant houses which grace Europe’s countryside. CONDITION: Light shelf wear. Otherwise in Great Like new condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: Fourteenth and fifteenth century Italy witnessed a rebirth of the traditional Roman-era villa. A country house, sometimes the family seat of power like Villa Caprarola. More often designed for seasonal pleasure, it was usually located within easy distance of a city. The first examples of Renaissance Villa dates back to the age of Lorenzo de' Medici, and they are mostly located in the Italian region of Tuscany(the"Medi

Icons of Renaissance Architecture by Alexander Markschies. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 144 pages. Publisher: Prestel; 2003) The Renaissance was aesthetically one of the most demanding and fascinating periods in the history of architecture. It developed out of Filippo Brunelleschi's Foundllings' Hospital in Florence and subsequently evolved into a pan-European phenomenon. The end of this period being marked by works by Carlo Maderno, Inigo Jones and Elias Holl. The style is based on rationality and clarity, the harmony of proportions and a balanced relationship between the individual and the whole. Influenced by Classical models, there was a growing awareness in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that something new could be created, something new that could be compared to the art of the ancient world. As opposed to other ... moreworks on Renaissance architecture. This publication does not focus solely on Italy with its buildings and urban areas in central and northern Italy and the palace architecture of Mantua and Urbino. The inclusion of the“Italian architectural model” in the buildings of other European countries is also treated in depth. Readers can relish in a delightfully varied and often surprising panorama of Renaissance architecture reaching out from Italy to Germany, France, England, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Russia. This volume captures the rediscovery of harmony in architecture throughout Europe by focusing on the most impressive buildings and describing this development in exquisite photographs. Numerous drawings and explanatory texts, placing the buildings in their appropriate architectural, cultural and historical setting. Interesting details about patrons, a building's specific requirements, its function and the impression it was intended to make are also discussed. CONDITION: Light shelf wear. NEW Renaissance Venice Convent Nuns “Virgins of Venice” Illicit Lovers Politics
Virgins of Venice: Broken Vows and Cloistered Lives in the Renaissance Convent by Mary Laven. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 282 pages. Publisher: Viking; 2003) Venice in the late Renaissance was a city of fabulous wealth. Reckless creativity, and growing social unrest as its maritime empire crumbled. It was also a city of walls and secrets, ghettos and cloisters- including fifty convents housing three thousand nuns, many of them refined, upper-class women who had been immured against their will. In this utterly fascinating book. Cambridge historian Mary Laven uncovers the long-hidden stories of the"Virgins of Venice" and the secret, and often surprising, lives they led. Sifting through records kept during the Counter-Reformation. Laven has created a detailed and dramatic tapestry of resourceful, determined, often passionate ... morewomen who managed to lead fulfilling lives despite their virtual imprisonment. Far from being precincts of piety and silence, the convents of Venice were hotbeds of political scheming, colorful pageantry, gorgeous decoration, and illicit love affairs. One nun was so determined to sleep with her lover that she painstakingly chipped a hole in a stone wall so he could climb through under cover of night. Another expressed her individuality through obsessive gift giving while keeping records of the dangerous flirtations going on around her. Still others exercised considerable clandestine power in the dangerous game of Venetian politics. Rich in intrigue and gossip. Eye opening in its historic revelations, and written with drama and compassion. Virgins of Venice” brings to life a culturally vibrant period in Venice and the hidden residents who dwelled behind its walls. CONDITION: New. Never read. NEW Courtier Life Renaissance Italy Castiglione’s Cortegiano Ettiquette 1528AD
The Fortunes of the Courtier: The European Reception of Castiglione’s Cortegiano by Peter Burke. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 210 pages. Publisher: The Pennsylvania State University Press; 1995) List Price $35.95] Castiglione's“Cortegiano” Or“Book of the Courtier” is often read as a book embodying the spirit of the High Renaissance in Italy. It is therefore easy to forget that Castiglione wrote the Courtier as a practical guide to contemporary conduct and that it quickly became a huge success outside Italy. More than a hundred editions have appeared in numerous languages since its first publication in 1528. With this in mind, cultural historian Peter Burke sets forth in his brilliant new book to explore how readers over the years have responded to the Courtier. Because it was read so widely in Europe. The Courtier affords Burke an ideal test ... morecase for the diffusion and reception of ideas. From Poland and Hungary to England, Portugal, and even the New World, he takes us on a fascinating tour of courts, libraries, and reading rooms in search of Castiglione's ideal courtier. He shows how changing responses to the Courtier, both positive and negative, reveal changing social values and how regional variations in its reception reflect the emerging cultural map of Europe. His evidence includes printing history, translations, marginalia, and records of sale and possession. He concludes with a discussion of the later fortune of the Courtier. Including its role in the"civilizing process" and its curious appeal to writers as different as Samuel Johnson and W. B. Yeats. Informed by Burke’s considerable knowledge of printing and publishing history, this book contributes to our growing understanding of the history of the book and to our knowledge of the Renaissance and its reception. Time-Life Great Ages of Man Series– Age of Exploration. CONDITION: Light shelf wear. Otherwise in Very Good to Like New condition. Seemingly never read. Pages are pristine; clean, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR JACKET DESCRIPTION(S) AND FOR PAGES OF PICTURES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover: 192 pages. Publisher: Time-Life Books Inc. 1966) The“Great Ages of Man” series was released in the mid-1960’s. Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, ... moremonuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The pictures of the world’s greatest art and architecture alone are worth the cost of these books. But don’t get the impression that these volumes

Florence, Milan, and the others. The particular nature of their history and culture through the five centuries of their emergence, magnificent flowering, and twilight is brilliantly explored in terms of the internal shifts of economic, social, and political power- by violence, by manipulation, by the gradual pressures of changing circumstance. And here are the life and culture and works of imagination that were created as the merchants and guilds wrested dominion from the ancient nobility, from the first struggles against the Holy Roman Empire in the 12th century through the rich cultural blaze and political exhaustion of the 16th century. Martines has drawn together ... moreand chronicled in a single fluent narrative all the explosive energies, the social strife, the civil disorder, the political violence, the economic transformations, the crises of control, the religious fervor and corruption, and the spectacular achievements of art and intellect that made and defined the city-states. The Civilization of Europe in the Renaissance by John Hale. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 648 pages. Publisher: Atheneum; 1994) ISBN: 0689122004. In this extraordinarily rich and engaging book. John Hale has painted, on a grand canvas, what he calls"an investigative impression" of one of the highest points of European civilization: the flourishing, between 1450 and 1620, of the period we have come to call the Renaissance. It was an age that, wrote Marsilio Ficino in 1492, has like a golden age restored to light the liberal arts which were almost extinct: grammar, poetry, painting, sculpture, architecture, music. The book contains memorable descriptions of all of these. But Hale is not concerned simply with the arts: his interest is much wider. This] was the first age in which the words'Europe' and'European' ... moreacquired a widely understood significance. It saw the emergence of a new and pervasive attitude to what were considered the most valued aspects of civilized life. It witnessed the most concentrated wave of intellectual and cultural energy that had yet passed over the continent. It was also a period in which there were such dramatic changes of fortune for better of worse- religious, political, economic and, through overseas discoveries, global- that more people than ever before saw their time as unique, referring to'this new age, the present age, our age' to one observer it was a'blessed age, to another, the worst age in history" Hale paints his picture with an astonishing multiplicity of themes, people, and ideas. How did Europeans see themselves and others? What united them and separated them, both geographically and within their communities? What languages did they speak and write, and how widely? How did they fix themselves in time and space? What did they call civilized? What did they buy and sell? How did they dress and eat? What did they think about and how did they communicate their thoughts? One of the strengths of this book, which moves far beyond c

Publisher: Prestwick House; 2005) Romeo and Juliet is a play by William Shakespeare first performed in 1594 or 1595 A.D. And published in a quarto in 1597 A.D. The characters of Romeo and Juliet have been depicted in literature, music, dance, and theatre. The appeal of the young hero and heroine, whose families the Montagues and Capulets are implacable enemies, is such that they have become, in the popular imagination, the representative type of star-crossed lovers. Shakespeare’s principal source for the plot was“The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet” A long narrative poem by English poet Arthur Brooke. The poem was written in 1562, a year before Brooke’s ... moredeath in 1563. Brooke had based his poem on a translation of a tale by an Italian writer, Matteo Bandello(1485-1561) Shakespeare set the scene in Verona, Italy, during the month of July. Juliet, a Capulet, and Romeo, a Montague, fall in love at a masked ball of the Capulets and profess their love when Romeo later visits her at her private balcony on her family’s home. Because the two noble families are enemies. The couple is married secretly by Friar Laurence. When Tybalt, a Capulet, kills Romeo’s friend Mercutio in a quarrel, Romeo kills Tybalt and is banished to Mantua. Juliet’s father insists on her marrying Count Paris, and Juliet goes to consult the friar. He gives her a potion that makes a person appear to be dead. He proposes that she take it, and that Romeo then rescue her. Juliet complies. Unaware of the friar’s scheme. Romeo returns to Verona on hearing of Juliet’s apparent death. He encounters Count Paris, kills him, and finds Juliet in the Capulets’ burial vault. Romeo gives Juliet a last kiss, and kills himself with poison. Juliet awakens, sees dead Romeo, and kills herself. The families learn what has happened, and end their blood feud. CONDITION: New. Ne
