HCDJ Villas & Palaces of Europe Medieval Renaissance
Villas and Palaces of Europe by Adalbert Dal Lago. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 157 pages. Publisher: Paul Hamlyn; 1969) ISBN: 0600012352. The social background of an age had an important influence on the design of great houses. Thus the elegant but comparatively small Palladian villas of the Veneto were as much a product of sixteenth century Venetian society as the grand chateaux of the Loire were a reflection of the elaborate French court. In selecting examples of villas and palaces for this book. The author, Adalbert Del Lago has naturally made a very personal choice. Yet each example has a place in one of the currents of European architecture which makes it particularly interesting or significant. The author also takes advantage of the detailed captions which accompany the plates in order to describe the architectural details ... moreand to point out the sources and influences of each house. Palladio was the first European architect to seek and achieve an intimated relationship between a building and its landscape. Conceived as integrated elements, and it is the evolution of this idea which links and yet contrasts the magnificent villas and palaces described. The superb illustrations enable us to compare the Villa Rotonda, Chenoceaux, Fontainebleau, Longleat, and the Schonbrunn, with many other less well-known but equally elegant houses which grace Europe’s countryside. CONDITION: Light shelf wear. Otherwise in Great Like new condition. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. PLEASE SEE PUBLISHER. PROFESSIONAL, AND READER REVIEWS BELOW. More often designed for seasonal pleasure, it was usually located within easy distance of a city. The first examples of Renaissance Villa dates back to the age of Lorenzo de' Medici, and they are mostly located in the Italian region of Tuscany(the"Medi

Each volume undertakes to describe the major events that happened in one specific time period(or“age” in the development of mankind’s civilization(s) The volumes are richly illustrated. And designed as an introduction to the time frame covered. Especially compelling are the artists interpretations or recreations of what various ancient civilizations would have looked like– their architecture, homes, ... moremonuments, cities, daily life, jewelry, food, family life, dwellings, occupations, etc. As just one instance, the ruins of Babylon and Ur, Athens and Rome hint at the incredible richness of those fabled cities. The artist’s recreations in this series are simply mind-numbing. This is as close as you can be to actually having been there. Equally noteworthy are the photographic collections of artifacts and relics attributed to the specific age, really exceptional. The entire series is truly a magnificent introduction to the history of the era. If you could have just one book(or series of books) to introduce the history of humankind. This would have to be it. The overviews are concise and well-written. Together with the illustration and pictures they impart a wonderful mental and emotional“picture” of what life must have been like in various civilizations and at various times. Done in a style so wonderfully characteristic of Time-Life’s publications, these are over-sized“coffee table” type books full of impressive imagery. The Decameron of Giovanni Boccaccio Translated by Frances Winwar- Complete and Unabridged. DESCRIPTION: Hardcover with Dust Jacket: 666 pages. Publisher: The Modern Library; 1955) The Decameron' is a fascinating example of classic literature that remains fresh and entertaining today. Written in the mid-14th century. It concerns the first major outbreak of the black plague in Europe, which emerged in Italy in approximately 1347. Boccaccio begins, in the prologue, by stating his purpose for writing the book- namely, to entertain literate women with nothing else to do with their time. The story itself concerns ten young Florentines(seven women- Pampinea, Filomena, Neifile, Fiammetta, Elissa, Lauretta, and Emilia; and three men- Panfilo, Dioneo, and Filostrato) who flee the city in hopes of escaping the plague. To occupy themselves during ... morethis time, they tell each other stories, with each person telling one story per day to make a total of 100 stories over the course of the entire book. At the beginning of the first day, Boccaccio provides an excellent and detailed description of the plague itself. The book ends with the refugees returning to their homes, and a closing epilogue from the author. CONDITION: Shelf wear and soiling to Dust Jacket. Yellowing pages and in good condition. Life in a Medieval Village by Frances and Joseph Gies. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 257 pages. Publisher: Harper and Row. Publishers; 1990) In this latest addition to their series on life in the Middle Ages. Frances and Joseph Gies have combined the recent discoveries of archeology with information from contemporary documents to create a lively and convincing portrait of rural people at work and at play seven hundred years ago. Focusing on the village of Elton, in the English East Midlands, the authors show medieval peasants not only as tenants and elements in the manorial system, but as members of a village community, who plant their own fields and those of their lord, administer village affairs, sue and are sued in the manorial court, and relate to one another in ways that surprisingly transcend their status as“free” or“villain” The authors ... moredescribe the peasant’s food, housing, and family life; the threatening tensions between them and the lord of the manor, and the place of the church in their lives. Though the main focus is on Elton circa 1300 A.D. the Gieses supply enlightening historical context in an account of the origin, development, and decline of the European village, itself an invention of the Middle Ages. HCDJ Ancient Glass Phoenicia Syria Egypt Rome Medieval
Glass from Antiquity to the Renaissance: 72 Plates in Full Colour by Giovanni Mariacher. DESCRIPTION: Hardback: 157 pages. Publisher: Cameo/ Hamlyn; 1970) ISBN: 0600338083. The origins of glass are shrouded in mystery. But according to tradition, it was accidentally discovered by a group of shipwrecked Phoenician sailors when lighting a fire on a sandy beach. Certainly the Phoenicians traded in primitive glass ornaments as did the ancient Egyptians. When glass blowing was developed, many centers of glass manufacture sprang up and flourished around the Eastern Mediterranean, particularly in Syria and Alexandria. Meanwhile in Western Europe the art of glass making was established and spread under the benevolent eye of the Romans. Giovanni Mariacher traces the influence of these two traditions illustrating his text with marvelous examples of ... moreByzantine. Islamic, and Medieval glass. Then in the last part of the book he describes Venetian glass of the Renaissance; exquisite, unmistakable, unsurpassed. CONDITION: Clean but EX-LIBRARY hardcover w/dustjacket encased in mylar cover. Book displays the usual library markings and stamps. Both inside and out, normally associated with ex-library books. Dustjacket is taped down to the book's covers, and there are tape markings/stains/residue to the end papers(the first and last blank pages within the book) Otherwise except for the customary library stampings(some inked out) on a few of the first pages within the book, the pages are otherwise clean, crisp, unmutilated, reasonably well bound, and unmarked. Lastly, the surface of the closed page edges do show slight light-darkening(visible only when book is closed, not to individual pages, only to the mass of closed page edges) The book is otherwise clean and in reasonably good condition. Perhaps not a"shelf trophy" it is nonetheless a sturdy reading copy. Satisfaction guaranteed. In stock, ready to ship. PLEASE SEE IMAGES BELOW FOR SAMPLE PAGES FROM INSIDE OF BOOK. MORTAR (STONE BOWL), MEDIEVAL ITALY
MORTAR(STONE BOWL) MEDIEVAL ITALY Diameter: 5 1/2" Hole Depth: 2 3/4" Height: 3 1/2" Weight: 6 lbs 3.4 oz An exquisite. Heavy stone mortar from the coastal Sicilian city of Licata. The mortar dates to the 1400s and had been in my extended family estate since those times. The mortar is composed of a very hard. Brown-tinted stone. Four projections are along the cardinal points of the bowl sides. Two of the lug-like projections are damaged-the result of centuries of pounding/grinding. Pitting can be seen along the side-though here that is the result of crudely carved stone. The interior of the mortar is somewhat smooth and it maintains a coating of some type. A large stone pestle would have been the accompanying tool inserted within this artifact. The small size of this 600 year old stone was used for small quantities of food/herbs. ... moreEarly on. It probably graced an early fireplace/stove area. My extended Sicilian family did say that up until recently. They occasionally used this stone bowl for grinding nuts and herbs.
