It is without a doubt a superior strike, considerably larger and heavier than the typical specimen of the era. The obverse of the coin depicts Roman Emperor Philip I, draped and with radiate crown; and the legend“IMP M IVL PHILLIPVS AVG” M IVL PHILIPPVS” refers to the Emperor’s name. Marcus Julius Philippis. Publisher: Charles Scribner's Sons; 1955) This is the story of the vanished race which for nearly 400 years. Until the rise of Rome in the fifth century B.C. exercised power over Central Italy and the Mediterranean. Everything about the Etruscans is mysterious. The Romans, their successors in dominion over Italy, sought systematically to delete all trace of them from the face of the earth. Superficially the attempt almost succeeded, for it was not until two centuries ago that archaeology began effectively to restore the Etruscans to history. But in reality the attempt was always doomed to failure because, as this book sets out to show, the soil of ... moreEtruria was so steeped in the spirit of the Etruscans that their influence was never extinct or even dormant, least of all among their conquerors, the Romans themselves. Frau Sibylle von Cles-Reden. A trained archaeologist, describes the Etruscan sites and brings them back to life with the imagination of an artist. Each major site in turn: Caere, Vulci, Clusium, Volsinium and the rest, is seen to represent one or another of the major fields of Etruscan achievement: pottery or sculpture, painting or architecture, religion or the Etruscan way of life. Each leads her in turn to a fascinatingly discursive account of a different aspect of Etruscan history, in which her sensitive awareness of the continuity of the race and the timeless quality of their native landscape is matched by a large number of magnificent photographs. The Etruscan mystery has never been more sympathetically evoked, nor more nearly unraveled. CONDITION: Modestly used. Clean. Pages are unmarked, no notes or highlighting, unmutilated, remaining well bound. Cloth covers are clean. Dustjacket shows only modest edge and corner shelfwear, one small 3/4 inch edge tear(neatly mended) at the top edge of the front side,

Egyptians, Etruscans, Phoenicians, Minoans, Sumerians and Greeks. During the 2nd millennium B.C. amber was in large part responsible for a network of roads built to facilitate the trade. The first trade roads archaeologists have evidence for are from the ancient Biblical/Mesopotamian city of Ur(home of Abraham) By 1700 B.C. the ... moreMinoans had established jealously-guarded trade routes from Knossos(Crete) to Turkey, Cyprus, Egypt, Afghanistan, and Scandinavia. While solid amber is much more costly, reconstituted amber has been used for centuries to produce inexpensive amber beads and“gemstones” In fact many of the faceted amber“gemstones” found both in antique as well as contemporary gemstones are of reconstituted amber. Molded amber/resin was quite commonly used in Eastern Europe and Central Asia for centuries up through the Victorian era to produce ersatz gemstones. PUBLISHER REVIEW: REVIEW: The Etruscan ... morecivilization is the name given today to the culture and way of life of people of ancient Italy whom ancient Romans called Etrusci or Tusci. The ancient Greeks' word for them was Tyrrhenoi. Or Tyrrsenoi. The Etruscans themselves used the term Rasenna, which was syncopated to Rasna or Ra?na. As distinguished by its own language, the civilization endured from an unknown prehistoric time prior to the foundation of Rome until its complete assimilation to Italic Rome in the Roman Republic. Numerous artifacts of Etruscan culture survived the Roman conquest. At its maximum extent during the foundation period of Rome and the Roman kingdom. It flourished in three confederacies: of Etruria, of the Po valley and Latium and of Campania. Rome was sited in Etruscan territory. There is considerable evidence that early Rome was dominated by Etruscans until the Romans sacked Veii in 396 BC. Culture that is identifiably and certainly Etruscan developed in Italy after about 800 B.C. approximately over the range of the preceding Iron Age Villanovan culture. The latter gave way in the seventh century to a culture that was influenced by Greek traders and Greek neighbors in Magna Graecia. The

DETAIL: Archaeologists have uncovered ancient Etruscan jewelry with ruby originating from Ceylon which dates back to the seventh century B.C. In the classical ancient world. Rubies from Afghanistan, Ceylon, India and Burma were traded in the ancient port cities of the Eastern Mediterranean(often by Phoenicians) and from there traveled throughout Europe. It is believed that most of the ancient world’s ruby came from Ceylon, where evidence suggests ruby may have been mined for the past 20,000 years. However scientists believe that ruby has also been mined in Burma since Paleolithic and Neolithic times as well, as mining tools have been excavated by archaeologists dating both to the Bronze Age as well as backwards into the Stone Age. In Antiquity and through the Middle Ages it was believed that the cosmos was reflected in gemstones, and ruby was associated with the planet Mars. The ancient Romans also associated ruby with Mars(known as“Ares” to the ancient Greeks, son o

Etruscan Style Bronze Statue-Warrior-Italy-10 1/2” Tall-Enchanting!
At the estate sale the trustees did not know much about this statue. Except that it had belonged to their grandfather, who had brought it back from Italy when returning from the wars sometime in 1945 or 1946. He served in two invasions and made it to Rome, at least. He identified the statue to his family as Etruscan. He was a collector, even back then as a young man, and shipped home several Roman artifacts he had traded for. This statue was among them. The style appears Etruscan. Especially the helmet and breastplate. Also the style of the warrior's features. He is remarkable. There is a mounting peg on his right foot. Some recent wood debris there shows he was once on display in modern times. Probably by grandad. He is 10 1/2” tall, not counting the peg. Shipping is $12.50 anywhere in the U.S. International eBayers please contact us ... morefor rates to your country. As with all of our items. Expedited shipping is available, quote on request. This is probably a reproduction. But we’re not really sure. The painting is nicely done. The cup is 3 5/8” handle to opposite edge, 3 ¼” wide, and 2 ¾” tall. The saucer is 5 1/8” in diameter and 1 ¼” tall. There are some chips in the cup and saucer, study the photos.
