DETAIL: This is a very handsome and somewhat uncommon ... moresilver denarius produced in the imperial city of Rome itself. Sometime during the year 223 A.D. The coin is in very good condition, only very light wear from circulation in ancient Rome, the legends and themes very clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back, and an exceptionally well-centered strike at that on a very generous flan. Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. It is without a doubt an exceptional and superior strike. The obverse of the coin depicts the head of Roman Emperor Severus Alexander, depicted draped and with laureate crown; and the legend“IMP C M AVR SEV ALEXAND AVG” M AVR SEV ALEXAND” of course refers to the Emperor’s full name. Marcus Aurelis Severus Alexander. The“M” is obviously the initial for“Marcus” AVR” is short for“Aurelian” V” as there is no“U” in Roman Latin. SEV” is short for“Severus” and these abbreviations are followed by“ALEXAND” short for“Alexander” The“IMP” preface to his name is an abbreviation for“Imperator” Imperator was originally a title or acclamation awarded to victori

Fairly rare silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself sometime between 145 and 161 A.D. It is in very good condition, evidencing only moderate wear from circulation in ancient Rome, but the legends and themes remain clear and distinct. It was well struck both front and back the result a little oblong. As a result of the oblong strike, the coin is just a little undersized, too small to catch the entire strike. The entirety of the theme(the“pictures” is present, but a portion of the Latin legends are lost. But on the other hand, it is a fairly thick coin in very high relief, almost as if it were ancient Greek coin. On the whole it is without a doubt a superior strike, the slightly undersized nature being more than made up by the thickness of the coin and the height of the relief. The obverse of the coin depicts bust of the Empress Faustina“the Younger” Daughter of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, wife of Emperor Marcus Aurelius(the elderly emperor of Hollywood’s“Gladiator) mother of future Emperor Commo

Unlike most coins of the era, the strike caught the entirely of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. The only shortcoming of the specimen is that quite characteristic of the coinage of the era, the reverse strike was struck with a worn die, and so the reverse is of lower profile and not quite as finely detailed as is the obverse. These coins were all struck by hand(of course) and the reverse dies were generally used about three times as long as were the obverse dies(which contained the emperor’s image and so had better be sharp and well struck) Consequentially as the rear die was used for tends of thousands of strikes. DETAIL: This is a handsome and fairly uncommon silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself sometime between 103 and 111 A.D. It is in exceptionally good condition. With only very mild wear from circulation in ancient Rome, all of the legends and themes very clear and distinct. It was exceptionally well struck both front and back, on a generous planchet(blank) The strike was well-centered, and so caught virtually all of both the legends and the themes, and this is applicable to both the obverse as well as the reverse. On the whole it is an exceptional specimen, the generous planchet and well-centered strike, combined with very low circulatory wear, likely placing the coin within the top ten percentile. The obverse of the coin depicts the bust of the Roman Emperor Marcus Trajan. Emperor Trajan is depicted draped with laureate crown and accompanied by the fairly complex legend“IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V PP” TRAIANO” of course refers to the Emperor’s name. There being no“J” in Roman Latin the letter“I” is used. Emperor Traja

DETAIL: This is a very handsome and fairly rare silver denarius produced in the city of Rome itself in 200 A.D. The coin is in good condition. Evidencing only very light wear from circulation in ancient Rome, however there is in evidence some modest porosity(fine surface pitting consequence of being buried for millennia) on the reverse side. The flan(edge) is a bit irregular(as was typical for coins produced during this era) and the strike was just a little bit left of dead center. Nonetheless all legends and themes are quite distinct, and unlike most coins of the era, the planchet(blank coin) was generously sized, and as a result the entirety of both the legends as well as the thematic elements are present and complete. It is without a doubt a very nice strike, much better than average. The obverse of the coin depicts the head of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus. Depicted with laureate crown; and although a portion of the legend is missing due to the slightly undersized nature of the coin, it was originally accompanied by the legend“SEVERVS AVG PART MAX” SEVERVS” of course refers to the Emperor’s name, Lucius Septimius Severus” The suffix“AVG” was

Belgica Foederata in Latin) was a European republic between 1581 ad 1795. In the same location as the modern Kingdom of the Netherlands, which is the successor state. Dutch Colonial New York Penny In the 1600’s. The“Golden Age” of Dutch history, the Netherlands became a great sea and colonial power. This was due, ... morein no small part, to the Dutch East India Company(Vereenigde Oostindishche Compagnie, or VOC, in Dutch) The VOC was the first company in the world to issue stock, and by 1669, it had become the richest private company the world had ever seen, with over 150 merchant ships, 40 warships, 50,000 employees, and a private army of 10,000 soldiers. The VOC assumed many of the functions of the government of the Netherlands, including minting coins, which circulated wherever the Dutch settled or traded. Manhattan was discovered in 1609(believe it or not. On September 11, 1609) by Henry Hudson, commander of the VOC ship, the Half Moon. The province of New Netherland(which later became the State of New York) was created in 1624. Its capital was New Amsterdam, which lay on the southern tip of Manhattan— purchased” from the Indians by Peter Minuit for $24 in trade goods. Of course, the Indians had no concept of land ownership, and only later discovered what the Dutch had in mind when they were handing out trinkets. Because the Dutch were instrumental in the early development of New York, Dutch coinage joined the Spanish, Portuguese, and British coins that were used for daily transactions
