Two Antique 19th Century Genuine Natural Good Quality Marquise Faceted Ruby Precious Gemstones from Ceylon. ORIGIN: Ceylon. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: ... more5mm. Width: 2 1/2mm. Measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.24 Carats(the pair) NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Ruby was worn by the ancient Mediterranean civilizations as an amulet for protection from plagues. Poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. Both the Greeks and Indo-Europeans(Celts) believed that the“heat” evidenced by the intense, red color was fire from within the gemstone, capable of boiling water or melting wax. Here are two very nice quality 19th century antique hand faceted marquise cut ruby precious gemstones from Ceylon(present day Sri Lanka) Both are relatively eye clean, of higher value character as opposed to lower value translucent rubies. Of course most ruby gemstones are anywhere from lightly to heavily blemished. Most completely transparent rubies you see offered today at retail are synthetic. While this particular pair might not be absolutely flawless, to casual scrutiny they are at least near eye clean, and are definitely at the higher end of the quality spectrum. At magnification(such as these 5x images here) they are seen to possess a modest number of very faint blemishes composed of colorless crystalline material. Nonetheless, they both possess the much sought after bright blood red color which has captivated mankind for eons. To the trained eye the photo enlargements will literally shout that the gemstones have been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machinery, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. These gemsto

A fascinating ancient Celtic bronze toggle. Dating to approximately 50 B.C. A most unusual toggle. With the top end fashioned into a bull's head with ... morecurled horns, the eyes and brow incised. The lower end is modeled as a horse head, rendered in a rather reduced and abstract way, yet also capturing accurately the form of the creature. The central section of the toggle becomes the neck of the horse with the mane incised at the top. A horizontal perforation midway through. A beautiful example of imaginative Celtic art at its best. Celtic La Tene art is greatly admired for its free organic feel. Which lies in contrast to classical art that attempts to depict things in a naturalistic manner. Length: 36mm. Height of piece including mount: 62mm. Condition: Unrestored. Mounted on a beautiful bronze stand. Provenance: Inventory number: 89.111. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: The ancients also believed that a garnet could give its wearer guidance in the night. Allowing them to see when others could not. Due to its red color, ancient cultures including the Celts, Greeks, and Romans also associated it with blood, and thus garnet was thought to stop bleeding or bloodshed between enemies. Garnet was also worn for protection when traveling, and according to Jewish mythology, a giant garnet provided interior lighting for Noah's Ark. These gemstones were hand crafted by a 19th century Russian ... moreartisan. The faceted cut is a coarse precursor to what eventually became known in the industry as a“brilliant cut” round, the contemporary finish generally given to round diamonds. These lustrous semi-precious gemstones possess a rich, velvety, regal, blood red hue. They are extremely attractive gemstones, of very special character and remarkable color and texture. Highly favored by the royal houses of Renaissance Europe, they were considered noble in nature, and in some countries ownership was restricted to royalty and others of high birth. This particular variety of garnet is known as“pyrope” and is especially favored for its dark, blood red tones. They are truly gorgeously colored brilliant semi-precious gemstones. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstones have been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors. And is not considered a detriment. Unlike today's computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of gemstones such as these is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal

Ancient Roman Celtic Thrace (Bulgaria) Bronze Jewelry Plaque Bronze Brooch AD200
Handsome Ancient Roman Bronze Jewelry Plaque AD 200. CLASSIFICATION: Roman-Celtic Bronze Brooch. ATTRIBUTION: Eastern Roman Empire(Thracia) Third Century A.D. DETAIL: A very handsome plaque containing the decorative fascia of a Roman bronze brooch. The design likely of Celtic inspiration. There remains portions of the pivot and clasp on the underside of the brooch, but the pin was broken out, as well as the hinge pivot pin as well. The piece is rather fragile and thin, so rather than add a new pin, it seemed best to mount it. The diameter of the brooch is 35 millimeters(almost 1 1/2 inches) and it weighs 3.07 grams. The style is quite characteristic of the Roman Empire’s first through third centuries. A popular style 2,000 years ago, today it is a recognizable and not uncommon find. However inasmuch as the pins used to attach the brooch to ... moreclothing tended to be very fine, they are generally not recovered intact, having decomposed/oxidized over the centuries, especially if(as often was the case) they were made of iron. You can clearly see the unmistakable evidence that the brooch spent two thousand years buried. Though the artifact is still more or less in one piece(excepting the pin) It nonetheless evidences moderately heavy porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic soil) Unfortunately ancient metal, especially bronze and iron, tends to decompose in soil over the millennia. It is not too uncommon to unearth metal artifacts which are nothing more than crumbled stains within the soil(green for bronze, red for iron) Oftentimes in such circumstances you can see what was a metal artifact, but when touched it crumbles into the soil. Fortunately this bronze brooch was not unearthed in such an advanced state of decomposition. It obviously evidences considerably porosity(the fine surface pitting caused by oxidation) which kind of enhances its character, however the artifact is still intact. Jewelry was very popular in the Roman Empire. Rings. Earrings, pendants, and bracelets, fibulae, brooches
