All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 0.31 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: Emeralds were quite favored in the Roman Empire. Especially by Roman Emperors, emeralds oftentimes used as Roman crown jewels. During the Roman era emerald was discovered in Germany near present-day Salzburg, and production continued through the Middle Ages before the deposit played out. Prior to the discoveries in Roman Germania, the ancient Mediterranean’s source for these precious gemstones was Egyptian emerald mines near the Red Sea. These were the recently rediscovered“Cleopatra’s Mines” near the Red Sea, described in ancient Egyptian written texts dated to the life of Pharaoh Sesostris III in the 19th century B.C. The Greeks worked these mines in the time of Alexander the Great and throughout the Ptolemaic(Hellenic/Macedonian) Dynasty. The last ruler of the Greek Ptolemaic Dynasty in Egypt, Cleopatra VII, Queen of Egypt, was often depicted and described wearing fabulous emeralds mined from those same famous ancient mines. Here’s a beautiful. Very nice quality, richly colored Colombian green emerald of intense, bright hue. Emeralds are nearly 100 times rarer than diamonds, and there are few opportunities to acquire such good quality natural emeralds at reasonable prices. The best specimens can bring over $40,000 a carat. Though the gemstone originated in Colombia, it was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewe

DETAIL: Mariners as early as the 11th century knew spinel as“lodestone” Which literally means“way stone” Due to the unique magnetic properties of spinel, it literally“found the way” for ancient mariners as it was used to magnetize the compasses which they used to guide their ship's course at sea. This also saw the beginning of the art of cartography, as seaman began to plot the courses of their voyages and create the earliest maps of the world. Often mistaken for ruby or sapphire in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, many of the so-called"rubies" and“sapphires” in Europe's crown jewels are actually spinel. The most famous is the Black Prince's"Ruby" a magnificent 170-carat red spinel that currently adorns the Imperial State Crown in the British Crown Jewels. Long believed to be a ruby, this gem was once owned by the Arabian Emirs, who were the rulers of Granada(present-day Spain) Celebrating our cultural legacy here's a gorgeous. Sparklin

Marco Polo described visiting these mines in his accounts of his travels. Later Medieval Europe’s rubies came principally from the border region between Burma and Siam(present-day Myanmar and Thailand) In the medie val world rubies were viewed as a stone of prophecy, used by medieval shamans and sorcerers to divine the future. It was believed that wearing ruby would attract good health, wisdom, fortune, and true love. Ruby was also worn as a talisman, as it was believed that the stone darkened when danger was near and then return to its original color when the danger was past. Ruby was also thought to be an antidote to poisoning as well, and to protect the wearer from lightening, plagues, poison, sorrow, and evil spirits. Consequentially rubies were considered even more valuable than diamonds. In Medieval Europe ruby was priced eight times higher than diamond. In addition to use in the manufacture of amulets and jewelry. Malachite was ground for use as eye shadow and as pigment for tomb paintings. Found in tombs of the pre-dynastic period, eye makeup equipment(palettes, grinders and applicators) seems to have also been essential for the afterlife. Malachite gets its name from the Greek word"Mala'khe" which refers to its green color. This gemstone was handcrafted into this sparkling faceted octagon late in the 19th century in Russia. The finished gemstone is also known within the trade as an“emerald cut” This is a very fine, richly colored golden yellow colored semi-precious gemstone, the color and flavor much like golden color honey. As you can see from the photo enlargements here, it is to the eye completely transparent and free from inclusions, and possesses exceptional sparkle and luster. It is very clean, water clear, and very bright. The trained eye will easily discern from the photo that the gemstone has been hand-faceted. The coarseness of the 19th century faceting is considered appealing to most gemstone collectors, and is not considered a detriment. Unlike today’s computer controlled machine processes, the cut and finish of a gemstone such as this is the legacy of an artisan who lived two centuries ago. Such antique hand-faceted gemstones possess much greater character and appeal than today's mass-produced machine-faceted gemstones. This gemstone has great luster and sparkle. And to the eye is completely transparent, but

This very large gemstone was primitively hand shaped and polished into this very beautiful coarse round cabochon by a 19th century Russian artisan. This lustrous semi-precious gemstone possesses a bright and colorful character. It is a nice quality tourmaline by 19th century standards. The gemstone would be more or less transparent except for the fact that it is so thick. Given the thick cut, it is more toward translucent than transparent. By today’s standards it is not a high quality tourmaline– though its size makes it nonetheless extraordinary. But by 19th century standards, this was a very desirable and expensive gemstone. In ancient Ceylon it was believed that star sapphire(a semi-opalescent gemstone extremely popular Victorian-era jewelry) served as a protective amulet and a guard against witchcraft. Celanese sapphire would have reached the classical Mediterranean cultures via the ancient trading routes that crossed present day Turkey. Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan to India and Egypt.
