Late 19th- early 20th Century Item# 130201HSL27 These are an absolute treasure. A rare find remarkably preserved and executed. They are a Pair of French Provincial Style Painted Antique Canape Sofas. One of the Period and crafted during the last quarter of the 18th Century. The other a nearly perfect copy of the first, probably executed during the late 19th to early 20th Century. Any craftsman can attest to the sheer difficulty of what was undertaken in crafting a copy of the original canape, a complex and incredibly time consuming endeavor that was certainly a commissioned project with a skilled cabinetmaker. Without any of the original drawings ... moreor schematics, the craftsman would literally have to measure every carving, build special tracks to lathe the molding, find woods that would adequately support the later"patination" and carve all aspects entirely by hand. The construction is identical to the period canapé. Including the placement of pegs to complete the tenon-mortised joints along the apron and frame. The results of this care are self evident. A very handsome and rare pair of antique canapé sofas in simply gorgeous condition. Both have a fine blend of teal. Cream and grey painted surfaces, flowing smoothly with the cream and light green diamond upholstery. The down-stuffed cushions are thick and comfortable with wonderful dimensions for the seating area that are quite supportive. The crest and apron of both sofas feature a somewhat unusual twisted and flowing ribbon tied in bows, the knees above each leg a deep inset rosette carving of floral inspiration, the legs broadly fluted, tapering and square in profile with upright bellflower carvings. French Louis XVI Style Carved and Gilded Antique Settee(Sofa. Canape, Loveseat) Probably France. C. 1900-15 Item# 130001KKG27 This is a very fine French Louis XVI Style Antique Settee with Gilded Carved surfaces. Crafted during the first years of the 20th Century at the end of the Rococo Revival period, c. 1900-15. It is an exceptional piece in every way, the molding work on every exposed surface is simply above reproach. The crest rail is bowed with an unusual carved design at the apex, lifting in swirls and actually flowing up and over the back of the settee. This is flanked on each corner with highly detailed acorn finials over floral carvings that fall along the stiles. The arms are likewise decorated, the handholds with carved acanthus leaves, the arm supports with scaled molding over acanthus foliage at the knees. The modern upholstery ... moreis a soft yellow with collections of fruits and foliage throughout, a comfortable stuffed back and a somewhat more supportive and firm seat. The apron of the antique french settee is a complex infiniti-motif closed on each end with swirled-rosettes at the knees. The entire sofa resting over twist-turned tapered legs terminating in plain ball feet. This is a very fine antique french settee. Crafted entirely by hand with utmost precision and care during an important revival of the French styles. With a wealth of demand for revivals of the 18th Century works, many very high quality pieces were renewed during this era, much of it brought into the States to satisfy the significant demand of discerning clients during the period. Crafted from careful moldings built from carved woods and gesso. Covered with bright golden gilt finish, the finish is rich and full of deep details. The arms continue the carvings of the back rail with smooth curves into acanthus leaf handholds. The settee has an elegant needlepoint upholstery of 18th Century french country life and hunting vignettes. The upholstery is bordered by brass tack buttons. The carving is spectacular and the upholstery is lively. The hand carved frame work and upholstery combine into a strong and durable piece of furniture that can be enjoyed for generations. This petite window bench has wonderful form. The arms scroll outward and into the seat frame, the entire frame covered in a striped upholstery, which stuffs over the frame of the seat. The sofa rests over two tapered and molded front legs, each of solid carved mahogany- the back legs are slightly backswept, tapering in a plain leg. This is a gorgeous designer piece. Dimensionally perfect for a window bench, a small settee in front of the master bed, as a seating implement in a smaller room or study. Crafted in the Louis XVI taste during the first quarter of the 20th Century is a classic example of the very successful design. Of diminutive proportions. It is more of an oversized bergere arm chair than a true loveseat. The width ideal for lounging casually with a good book in a comfortable setting. The crest is a perfect arch, sharply angled at each corner to form the squared back- this balance of tight lines with soft flowing form was a difficult harmony to achieve, conforming to the clean form important to Neoclassical designs while still being warm and inviting. This piece captures it perfectly, the arched crest mirrored in the projecting bowed apron and the soft cyma-curve ... moreof the arms and arm supports. These details giving shape and depth to an otherwise austere adherence to the square.
