It is in a light off ... morewhite colored fabric with roses and patterns embroidered into fabric. This sofa has only seen extremely light use since it was re-done by the Imperial shop. This is a $50 per yard fabric presently on this sofa. This fabulous six legged sofa comes from an impeccably clean non smoking Connecticut estate completely furnished by Nathan Margolis. The Margolis workshop is widely considered"the finest furniture makers of the 20th Century" in quotingWallace Nutting. They produced only 5,000 pieces of furniture from 1898 to their closing in 1973. Marglois furniture commands more than period furniture and is so highly regarded that their complete records were acquired and presently maintained by the Winterther Museum. This is a fine Chinese chippendale camelback sofa circa 1880-1920. It is upholstered in a beautiful red fabric. The fabric was on the sofa when I bought it so it is not freshly upholstered but is in very good condition. The wood trim is a nice dark rich finish. The trim has a few nicks from age but is structurally sound and tight. The straight leg frame has nice carving detail. The sofa is a good size. It measures 60" wide at the feet. 66" wide at the back, and 68" wide at the arms. It stands 38 1/2" high at the camelback. The sofa is 25" deep overall and the sitting area is 20" deep. Antique Miniature SALESMAN SAMPLE SOFA Rare Upholstered CHIPPENDALE Camel-Back
Antique Miniature Chippendale Camel-Back Upholstered Sofa Salesman Sample Furniture This remarkable miniature salesman sample sofa measures 9” high x 20” wide x 8 ½” deep. The front claw-and-ball feet are beautifully carved wood. Possibly mahogany. The graceful back and arms and three separate cushions are upholstered in a fine green silk fabric. Which has been painted with green, cream and red stripes to demonstrate in scale the actual full size fabric pattern. This sofa, along with a matching Chippendale upholstered arm chair, another upholstered easy chair and a beautiful Pembroke drop leaf table were purchased as a set at an antique show in Santa Monica in 1987. At that time they were said to be 64 years old. Putting them at circa 1923, though they may well be older. The dealer had purchased them in Rockport, Illinois as salesman ... moresamples. The construction and upholstery all indicates that they were in fact made as salesman samples and not apprentice pieces or doll furniture. The mahogany is beautifully carved and finished and in good condition. The joints are tight with no wobbly bits or cracks. The painted silk is fragile and in very rough. Shabby chic condition consistent with age. There is loss of paint. Splits in the fabric and staining. Please study the photos with the zoom feature to see these issues. This piece is incredibly charming despite the vintage condition and displays beautifully. It is extremely rare to find a miniature upholstered piece of this age. Paticularly a sofa, as most have not survived the years. This elegant sample. With perfect attention to detail, is a lovely testament to the history of the traveling furniture salesman. Attributed to Thomas Affleck and currently residing in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the Department of State. Resting over unusually bold square marlborough legs with molded cuffs and chamfered interior edges. The sofa has incredible presence and stance. Crafted of solid mahogany, each leg is a solid block of dense dark mahogany stretched with solid mahogany stretchers in front of backswept square and similarly thick back legs. The scrolled arms are tight and of excellent form, each executing a perfect"cyma" curvature before joining the frame, ... morethese flanking a deep goose feather and down upholstered cushion of great comfort. The back of the sofa is humped in the"camel-back" form. The ripple of the slight peaks on either side of the crest suggesting it's Gothic influences. Mirroring the back of the sofa is the soft serpentine of the apron, giving the piece a rolling and curving line against the thick block pillars lifting the form. Under the cushion is a label from Wood and Hogan(New York) The original retailer of this piece during the late 20th Century. Furniture from my great grandmother, great aunt, grandmother, mom and myself has all found a place at the house. Now, I’ve sold the house and am downsizing. My extended family doesn’t have the type of houses that can accommodate these fabulous antiques. Of course, I cannot dictate who the new owners of these antiques will be. But it is my hope that someone else will get as much pleasure from these heirloom pieces as they have brought to my family for generations. I’ll include a little family history with each piece because I think someone else will appreciate that these are not‘anonymous’ pieces sold by a dealer. They have a soul that accompanies their ... morebeauty. My mother has had this sofa for many years. And it came to my house about 18 years ago. She bought it at an antique auction about 30 years ago, and my best judgment is that it dates from the 1920’s or 1930’s. The Chippendale style rolled arm and ball and claw feet have exposed mahogany trim with carving. It has graceful lines. And will be an elegant addition to your home. It’s also very comfortable to sit on, and was a favorite place to perch during family gatherings. There is a single down fill cushion. I didn't fluff it up for the photos. But it gets nice and puffy. The beige silk upholstery features large textured calendula leaves. It’s almost like a matlesse, with a raised surface. While I realize that the fabric is not in perfect condition– see below– it is an elegant piece that still looks pretty darn good. The sofa is in good used condition. Structurally it is very sound. The frame and springs are in excellent condition. The mahogany finish shows some wear and there are a couple of minor dings. No repairs or cracks. WHAT A CLASSIC! I purchased this sofa with the intentions to restore it. It has Chippendale ball& claw feet in the front. Queen Anne'feet on the rear, coil springs, etc. There is no seat cushion but a upholsterer can provide when recovering. Restored will be worth some serious $$$$. Sofa is approx. 88" long, 37" tall at the back and approx 36" deep. However, I have now reached a point health wise(surgery pending) I must lighten up hard and fast as I will prolly relocate in the spring or before. Biggs Camelback Chippendale Sofa
Beautiful Biggs camelback Chippendale sofa built in the early 50's. Purchased new by my mother. It has the original coral damask fabric in good condition for a sofa 50 plus years old. There is some visible wear on the piping at the top where it was against a wall. This sofa still has the biggs labels and numerous brass nail heads(all there) It has a down cushion that is reversible and snaps into the sofa seat. It sits on eight mahogony legs(showing some light surface scratches) The front four are fluted. The legs are strengthened by mahogony stretchers. This is a smaller scale sofa measuring 81" long, 31" deep. The seat is 23' deep and 19" off the floor which varies depending on how high the down cushion is fluffed up. The top of the back is 35" from the floor. The sofa has no synthetic stuffing material being ... morestuffed with curly horse and pig hair.
