Lovely Vintage Irish Horn and Celluloid Rosary - Mitchell's Of Dublin Circa 1950
For auction here is a lovely example of the Irish horn rosaries which came out of the Mitchell's factory in Dublin up until about 1960. This particular rosary dates to around 1950. The beads are natural horn. Dyed green. The Our Father beads feature quaint brass caps. A typical feature of rosaries from the late 40s and early 50s. The chain and bead pins are brass. The center medal. The cross, and the corpus are all made of celluloid. Because it was fragile and particularly susceptible to heat, celluloid was replaced with more stable forms of synthetics in the 1960s. The cross on this rosary shows some light warping from age and exposure to direct sunlight(see photos) The center medal is a classic Miraculous Medal featuring Mary on the front. And the"M" on the reverse above the two hearts. This medal is in excellent shape, looking ... moreas though it was pressed only last week. If used gently and with care. This rosary will offer many more years of prayerful devotion to its new owner. Although the cross is not in perfect condition. Rosaries with celluloid components are becoming more and more rare due to its fragile nature. Celluloid is becoming highly collectible, and much sought-after. If you have any questions. Doubled and the crucifix is 2" x 1" and marked"made in Dublin" on the back. Pater beads are 1/ 4" round, and Ave beads are much thinner at 1/ 4" long. There is an old bronze or patinated brass St. Patrick metal with"St Patrick Pray FOR US" on the back and a beautiful Our Lady of Knock apparition scene medal with a sample of Knock water on reverse that seems to have water still in it though it is somewhat difficult to tell for sure.
