Roman terra sigillata pottery sherds found at Vechten(The Netherlands) The shard with the cow is repaired with glue. One shard(left) is part of an terra ... moresigillata oillamp. One shard has a stamp: CAPITO? Some information about Fectio(Vechten) Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the first excavations of a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items. TERRA SIGILLATA WITH AMOR AND RUNNING ANIMALS: STAG, LION, DOG?, 1.-2. CENT. AD
Terra Sigillata. Showing winged amor and runnig stag, lion and probably a dog reddish ceramic. Diam. 7,1 x 6,2 cm, fragment of an fine ware and attractive decorated tablet; Roman Imperial, 1st to 2nd cent. A.D. Terra sigillata as an archaeological term refers chiefly to a specific type of plain and decorated tableware made in Italy and in Gaul(France and the Rhineland) during the Roman Empire. These vessels have glossy surface slips ranging from a soft lustre to a brilliant glaze-like shine. In a characteristic colour range from pale orange to bright red; they were produced in standard shapes and sizes and were manufactured on an industrial scale and widely exported. The sigillata industries grew up in areas where there were existing traditions of pottery manufacture, and where the clay deposits proved suitable. The products of the Italian ... moreworkshops are also known as Arretine ware, and have been collected and admired since the Renaissance. The wares made in the Gaulish factories are often referred to by English-speaking archaeologists as samian ware. Closely related pottery fabrics made in the North African and Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire are not usually referred to as terra sigillata, but by more specific names, e.g. African Red Slip wares. All these types of pottery are significant for archaeologists: they can often be closely dated, and their distribution casts light on aspects of the ancient Roman economy. Roman red gloss terra sigillata bowl with relief decoration The surface of ancient terra sigillata vessels did not require burnishing or polishing. Burnishing was a technique used on some wares in the Roman period. But terra sigillata was not one of them. The polished surface can only be retained if fired within the low-fire range and will lose its shine if fired higher, but can still display an appealing silky quality. South Gaulish bowl. Dr.37, from the late 1st century AD, with a stamp of the potter Mercato in the decoration Terra Sigillata was the so called Porcelain of the Romans. Because o

RARE ANCIENT ROMAN TERRA SIGILLATA RED GLOSS SAMIAN WARE PLATE/CHARGER w/RELIEF
This is a very rare authentic Ancient Roman Terra Sigillata red gloss(or Samian Ware) plate or charger. It is beautifully decorated in relief work. With a large central rosette surrounded by a vine and rosette motif, with an unusual rope and leaf border. The piece measures 11" in diameter, and about 1 1/8" tall. The front has the remains of the old glaze, the back is unglazed. There is an old repaired portion, which is common with ancient pottery. There is also a small hole in one of the petals of the central rosette. I have owned this for years, I bought it from a local antique dealer who has since passed away, so unfortunately I do not have any real provenance for the piece. I had this looked at by several specialists in the field of Ancient Roman artifacts and they all agree that it is definitely Ancient Roman dating to the 1st ... morecentury AD, and quite rare on todays market. These are the kinds of pieces you only see in museums. You will be very pleased.
large roman samian ware/terra sigillata fragm. with rare maker stamp ca100-300AD
The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic. Which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but reached its zenith under Emperor Trajan. At this territorial peak, the Roman Empire controlled ... moreapproximately 6.5 million km² of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. ROMAN TERRA SIGILLATA FRAGMENTS VESSELS
ROMAN TERRA SIGILATA OR SIGILLATA FRAGMENTS OF ANCIENT ROMAN VESSEL DOMESTIC CROCKERY POT DECORATIVE ROMAN ITS VERY INTERESTING IT CAN BE A MUSEUM PIECE ITS VERY NICE ROMAN COLLECTION ITEM Terra sigillata as an archaeological term refers chiefly to a specific type of plain and decorated tableware made in Italy and in Gaul(France and the Rhineland) during the Roman Empire. These vessels have glossy surface ranging from a soft lustre to a brilliant glaze-like shine. In a characteristic colour range from pale orange to bright red; they were produced in standard shapes and sizes and were manufactured on an industrial scale and widely exported. The sigillata industries grew up in areas where there were existing traditions of pottery manufacture, and where the clay deposits proved suitable. The products of the Italian workshops are also known as ... moreArretine ware. And have been collected and admired since the Renaissance. The wares made in the factories are often referred to by English-speaking archaeologists as samian ware. Closely related pottery fabrics made in the North African and Eastern provinces of the Roman Empire are not usually referred to as terra sigillata. But by more specific names, e.g. All these types of pottery are significant for archaeologists: they can often be closely dated. And their distribution casts light on aspects of the ancient Roman economy. PLEASE WATCH MY OTHER ITEMS
