Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. These works were

CV Roman Bronze Ring SUPER LEGIONARY SOLDIERS BATTLE SHIELD ~ size 11 1/2
ROMAN BRONZE RING Perfectly Decorated Legionary Shield Size 11 1/2 Average Opening = 21.06mm Antiquities Corner is proud to present this fine historical artifact for your collecting pleasure. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. This ring has an SUPERB design! This fine ring was found at a Roman encampment site in Ancient Moesia and dates from between 100 and 300 AD This ring features the Roman Legionary Shield design. There is a shield design in the center of the bezel that is less common. Where the more common rings have a diamond surrounded by sets of lines in a diamond shape or a chevron. This example has vertical panels with alternating, filled-in, zig-zag ... morepatterns of triangles and diamonds that were carved in such a way that they REALLY jump out at you. The design on this ring is in TIP TOP condition. The design is crisp and clear and very well done. The shoulders of this ring are wide and MIRROR smooth as you can tell by the reflections in the second picture of the ring. You can see the nice shoulder decorations which are a little more fancy than we usually see. This is an AMAZING Legionary Artifact. Ancient Rome may have passed into history. But at least we have these artifacts to remind us of Rome's legendary might. It was common practice for Roman soldiers to wear rings that resembled the devices on their shields. There is a little extra wear here and there which adds to the charm of this STUNNING ring. This ring was also cast from an odd. Silvery b bronze alloy as you can tell from my pictures. In some lights it looks like silver but you can also see some golden highlights bounce off it as you move it in the sunlight. This ring has an uncommon design that makes this ring a rare treat indeed. ATTENTION* A few of you have asked me to give you a"heads up" on when a good"everyday" ring comes up. Well.he
CV Roman Bronze Ring LEGIONARY SOLDIERS SWORD STAR-CROSS
ROMAN BRONZE RING Golden Star Sword-Cross Design Size 8 1/2+ Average Opening = 18.60mm Antiquities Corner is proud to present this fine historical artifact for your collecting pleasure. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. SUPER STAR! That's what this 2000 year old Roman Ring is.SUPER! This ring was found at a Roman site in Ancient Moesia and dates from the 1st Century A.D. This ring features a 14mm x 14mm rounded-octagon bezel. The bezel has a nicely carved"Star-Cross" on it. The Star-Cross was a very early spiritual symbol and in later years was worked into and adopted by the Christians of Rome as their symbol. The designs carving is well done ... moreas you can see in my pictures. This"star-cross" has an added bonus. That the cross at the center is formed of 4 engraved"swords" These more detailed crosses are HIGHLY desirable and this is one of the best examples that I have seen in quite some time. This bezel sits above a nice solid band that is VERY wide for its size. The band measures just about 5.5mm wide along its whole length. The band's finish is mirror smooth as you can tell from my picture above. It was quite common for Roman soldier's to build up quite a little cache of"liberated" jewelry which they would use as a form of currency for their favorite activities. Gambling, women, food and drink. This ring has all the hallmarks of a True Collector's masterpiece! Do NOT miss your chance to own this FINE Roman ring Above and below are two more views of this FINE piece of Ancient History. Above is a picture that shows you the AMAZING shine on the rings that I am offering tonight. This ring is Round& Sound and 100% wearable This ring has a Wonderful Golden color to it with faint patina traces remaining This ring is a bit out of round but fits somewhere a li

CV Roman Bronze Ring FANCY DETAILED SOLDIERS CROSS with Lightning Bolts
ROMAN BRONZE RING Sparkling"Flower Cross" Design with Crisp Engravings Size 9 1.4 Average Opening = 19.19mm Antiquities Corner is proud to present this fine historical artifact for your collecting pleasure. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. This is a TERRIFIC ring! This ring was found at a Roman Battlefield site in the Balkans and dates from 300- 500 A.D. This ring features a thick. 13mm round bezel with some SUPER decorations. The bezel has a well done design that shows us a central design of a well done"Floral Cross" much like the designs that we see on other Late Empire pieces. It is amazing how deep the four arms of the cross are and ... morehow mirrorlike the open areas between them are. The bezel engravings are so deep that it makes them really stand out. This decoration is a well defined panel that has a lightning bolt figure running through it with some deep. Linear decorations highlighting the panels. This style is made to EXACTLY resemble the classic Legion style rings made in Rome itself. The color and condition of this ring is excellent because this ring was cast from an alloy which lends it that unmistakable bright gold color. It was common practice for Roman Legionaries to carry pieces of"liberated" jewelry in their purses for use as hard currency when on campaign. They would use them as money for their favorite off-duty activities. Namely, wine, women and gambling. This is a simple yet elegant ring that will complement any wardrobe nicely. The pictures above and below show two more views. The picture above shows you the lightning bolt decorations inside the panels on the shoulders of this ring. Above is a picture of the g

CV Roman Bronze Ring **NEW*** LARGE LEGIONARY SOLDIERS VOTIVE VIRGIN LILY FLOWER
ROMAN BRONZE RING Golden Soldier's Goddess"VENUS" Votive Ring Size 9 1/2 Average Opening = 19.40mm Antiquities Corner is proud to present this fine historical artifact for your collecting pleasure. These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. What a SUPER ring! This ring was found at a Roman military encampment site in the former Roman Province of Moesia and dates from 100- 300 A.D. This ring features a large 16mm rounded bezel which has a votive motif on it. There is a flower engraved rather deeply in the center of the bezel. The engraving is of some type of"LILY" The Lily is known as the"Virgin's Flower" and also as the symbol ... moreof Innocence. Light, Purity, Perfection, Mercy and Majesty. In Greco-Roman mythology this flower was sacred to Hear and Artemis. Even though Venus or Aphrodite as the Greeks called her was best known as the goddess of love she was supposed to have a soft spot for soldiers who fell in battle so some soldiers made offerings to her so she would look after them if they should fall in battle. In Byzantium and early France. It was a royal emblem(the fleur-de-lis is sometimes considered a stylized lily) Primarily the lily has Christian associations, usually attached to the Virgin Mary where it signifies chastity. when Christ is shown as the judge of the world with a lily in his mouth, the flower represents mercy. A lily and a sword signify guilt and innocence. The surface of this ring is silky smooth and with perfect shine. In addition to the nice bezel engravings. There are many teeny highlighting lines on the shoulders. Above and below are a couple more views of this remarkable ring. Every surface of this ring is as smooth as glass. I had to take the pictures in partial shade or the glare would have made it too difficult to photograph. Above is a picture that shows the SUPER shine of
