Ancient Roman Glass Sprinkler Flask - 200 AD
An ancient Roman glass sprinkler flask. Dating to around 200 AD. This elegant vessel is near perfect from every angle. Sitting on a ring base. With a piriform body reminiscent of a ripe pear, the neck is narrow, rising to a wide collared rim. The opening itself is tiny, so as to only allow its precious contents to sprinkle out slowly, giving the vessel its name. The glass a beautiful light green, decorated with a pattern of lathe cut bands across the body. Originally used to preserve oils and perfumes. This flask is near flawlessly preserved, indeed it is almost inconceivable that it is of such a great age. The fact that it is composed of glass, a material so precious and delicate, makes it all the more remarkable that it has survived in such condition. Unlike the vast majority of objects that survive from antiquity, we do not need to imagine ... morehow it must have originally appeared, we can see it in front of us, sitting atop the dresser of a lady of fashion over 1,800 years ago. Height: 3 ⅞ inches. Condition: Excellent. With a tiny nick on the rim, unrestored. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the French painter. Sculptor, film producer and writer Daniel Lander(1927– 2013) Mr. Lander. Ancient Roman Olive Green Ribbed Glass Flask - 300 AD
A beautiful ancient Roman green glass flask. Dating to the 4th century AD. Free blown. Composed of a beautiful olive green glass, the body in the shape of a ripe fruit hanging from a tree. The neck flaring, the small base slightly concave and with a prominent pontil mark(scar left behind from the ancient production process) The body is decorated with a series of carefully crafted shallow ribs which would have been tool worked whilst the glass was still soft. The style is highly suggestive of an origin within the eastern confines of the empire, likely the Levant. Many examples of this type can be termed somewhat crude. With little care taken or skill implied as to the overall form. That is not the case with this piece; it is the product of an ancient craftsman at the height of his craft and everything about this beautiful little flask is carefully ... morebalanced. Simply a magnificent piece of ancient glass. For a similar example currently with the Corning Museum. Please see: Whitehouse. D. 2001. Roman Glass in the Corning Museum of Glass: Volume One. Pg. 178. New York: Corning Museum. Height: 3 ⅞ inches. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. A very tiny crack to one side of the body is only noticeable on close inspection. Otherwise free of cracks. Provenance: Formerly in the collection of the French painter. Sculptor, film producer and writer Daniel Lander(1927– 2013) Mr. Lander. Ancient Roman Heavy Glass Unguentarium Bottle Flask - 2nd Century AD
An ancient Romano-Egyptian glass unguentarium. Dating to the 2nd- 3rd centuries AD. Cast glass. The colour an opal green, sitting upon a flat base with a short body, tall, cylindrical neck and flaring mouth. The container itself is limited to a short cylinder within the body of the heavy glass vessel, the inside walls displaying a beautiful range of turquoise to deep blue hues. Prior to the invention of glass-blowing in the first century BC. Casting glass was the only means of production. After glass-blowing emerged, the material became cheaper and more widely available, yet occasionally the use of casting persisted, as is evidenced in this vibrantly coloured piece. Flasks such as this would have been used for holding valuable cosmetics, medicines and oils. The heavy base(which could only be achieved through casting) would have given the ... morepiece stability.
