An attractive pair of ancient Roman bronze rings. One with a red garnet inlay depicting the god Mars, dating to around 100 AD. Both of classic form. One cast in solid bronze with a decorative pattern upon the bezel. The second with a red garnet inlay carved with a depiction of Mars, holding his spear in the left hand with the shield standing nearby. Owned by Romans across the social spectrum. Jewellery was worn for adornment, to display wealth and awareness of fashion. It may also have been worn as protection against bad luck. Designs which seem to us purely decorative were in fact carefully chosen for their protective power, as indeed this ring would have been. As the god of war and personification of the Roman martial spirit, images of Mars were worn, unsurprisingly, to encourage valor in battle.
