Angus, Scotland. 19th Century. SIZE: Length: 30mm. Width: 25mm. Depth: 12mm. All measurements approximate. WEIGHT: 46.69 carats. NOTES: Upon request we can set your gemstones as a ring. Pendant, or as earrings(click for more information) DETAIL: The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair. It would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Several centuries later the fourth century Roman Catholic Priest Hieronymus(also known as Saint Jerome) reported that eagles placed an amethyst in their nest in order to protect their young from the danger of snakebite. Another Roman account of the gemstone relates that(third century Roman) Saint Valentine owned a ring set with an antique amethyst carved with an image of Cupid. Amethyst was used extensively the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil, and wearing the stone was believed to protect female wearers from seduction. Celebrating our cultural inheritance here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst oval from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medieval, Renaissance, and Victorian Russia. Very popular in 18th and 19th century Victorian Scotland, amethyst has remained a very popular gemstone through the 20th century. This is a very fine richly hued, regally textured deep purple

However this is not what you might call a“classical depiction” of a Roman Legionary Eagle, which is usually head on or a three-quarters angle, with wings partly opened. This depiction is not even very fearsome, intimidating, or awe-inspiring at all. It seems a rather amateurish depiction, a simplification with little detail(not much more than an outline) perhaps done by someone not very familiar with what a Roman Legionary eagle was supposed to look like, as it looks rather more like a chicken than an eagle. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even if the depiction does not strike fear into the heart of the beholder(but rather amusement) it is still a wonderful depiction, even if quite atypical. As you can see. The periphery of the bezel was engraved with a boundary accent line, suggesting that perhaps the ring might have been used as a sea

Ancient Roman Bronze Legionary Eagle Brooch/Fibulae 1st Century AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About This Item This very impressive. Very rare piece of treasure portrays the Aquila, also known as an eagle in ancient Roman times. It is a solid bronze brooch/fibulae which bears a hole in the middle with the deepest carvings of its textured wings and tail. The pin at the back was lost in antiquity and only part of where it catches, remains. This treasure would have been worn with pride by a male legionary officer. An aquila. Or eagle, was the standard of a Roman legion. It was carried by a legionary known as an aquilifer, or eagle-bearer. One eagle was carried by each legion. The eagle was extremely important to the Roman military. Beyond merely being a symbol of a legion. A lost standard was considered an extremely grave occurrence, and the Roman military often went to great lengths to both protect a standard and to recover it if lost; for example, see the aftermath of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where the Romans spent decades attempting to recover the lost standard

Roman Bronze Roundel Attachment Depicting an Eagle
Roman Bronze Roundel Attachment Depicting an Eagle dia: 65 mm weight: 17 gm The Roman Empire was the post-Republican period of the ancient Roman civilization. Characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator(44 BC) the Battle of Actium(2 September 31 BC) and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus(4 January 27 BC) Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but the empire reached ... moreits greatest extent under Emperor Trajan: during his reign the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km2 of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, the institutions and culture of Rome had a profound and lasting influence on the development of language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and forms of government in the territory it governed, particularly Europe, and by means of European expansionism throughout the modern world. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory, putting an end to the Crisis of the Third Century. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time.8] The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. Roman Bronze Eagle Belt Buckle with Intaglio Stone
Roman Bronze Eagle Belt Buckle with Intaglio Stone weight: 42 grams measures: 83 mm/ 55 mm The history of the Roman world is an epic story which stretches out over the course of more than two millennia- the story of an small group of villages which went on to dominate a major part of the western world and was to substantially define its culture. It is obviously impossible to summarize the entire history within a few lines. However. Most chronologies distinguish between the following phases: Origins and Roman Monarchy(753- 509 B.C. A somewhat less familiar period, at the end of which Roman territory was only one small area, Latium, which remained threatened on all sides by Italic and Etruscan peoples. The Roman Republic(509- 27 B.C. paved the way for the institutions. Administration and organizational structures that were to sustain the force ... moreof Rome. By 264 B.C. Rome controlled the entire Italian peninsula. Its ambition would then be to dominate the Mediterranean. Following the destruction of Carthage in 146, this was achieved for the western part. Macedonia, allied with Carthage, was then defeated, and Greece was“liberated” from the Macedonians in 194. Rome occupied what is today the Turkish coastline. Julius Caesar was at the origin of the change which, within a few years(49-29 B.C. would change the Roman institutions into an empire which covered almost the whole of the Mediterranean shores, plus Gaul and present day Spain. The Roman Empire(27 B.C. 476 A.D. increased the grasp of Rome on the Western world even more so. However signs of crisis increase from 250 A.D. onwards. With the rise of new peoples who threaten the borders of the Roman empire. Within the empire, Christianity progresses and the Emperor Constantine converts to it in 324. In 395, Theodosius shares the empire between his two sons. The Western Empire fell in 476, whereas the Byzantine Empire remained, with many trials and tribulations until 1453. However things are not that simple. The rise of Rome and the fall of the Empire c

YOU ARE BIDDING ON THE ITEM PICTURED! The founding of Rome goes back to the very early days of civilization. It is so old. It is today known as'the eternal city' The Romans believed that their city was founded in the year 753 BC. Modern historians though believe it was the year 625 BC. Early Rome was governed by kings, but after only seven of them had ruled, the Romans took power over their own city and ruled themselves. They then instead had a council known as the'senate' which ruled over them. From this point on one speaks of the'Roman Republic'The word'Republic' itself comes from the Latin(the language of the Romans) ... morewords'res publica' which mean'public matters' or'matters of state' The senate under the kings had only been there to advise the king. Now the senate appointed a consul, who ruled Rome like a king, but only for one year. This was a wise idea, as like that, the consul ruled carefully and not as a tyrant, for he knew that otherwise he could be punished by the next consul, once his year was up.Rome knew four classes of people. This division was very important to the Romans. The lowest class were the slaves. They were owned by other people. They had no rights at all. The next class were the plebeians. They were free people. But they had little say at all. The second highest class were the equestrians(sometimes they are called the'knights' Their name means the'riders' as they were given a horse to ride if they were called to fight for Rome. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called'patricians' All the real power in Rome lay with them. The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC- almost 500 years. The Roman empire in the end was overr

These artifacts were originally designed to be enjoyed by their owners and I have tried to return these treasures to a state which will both charm and enchant their new owners and show the skill and craftsmanship of old. SCREAMING EAGLE This ring was found at a Roman encampment site in Ancient Thrace and dates from 200- 400 AD This is one of the most highly sought after ring designs by collectors of Roman Antiquities. These rings were ONLY worn by soldiers in Rome's Legions. Get your piece of Legionary history by bidding high and bidding early. Or better yet, use the"Buy It Now" option to make sure you win this beauty. These ... morering are getting EXTREMELY hard to find. I love my rings and have MANY in my personal collection and I was torn as to whether I would part with this GEM and have held onto it for a few years. I have many long time customers and I hope one of them sees this BEAUTY and snaps it up. The details. The weight and the SHINE of the superior alloy it was cast from makes it one of the best rings that I have EVER restored. The alloy has a special color to it and polishes up so nicely that I believe that it was cast from the same alloy that was used for the breastplates of Roman Centurions. This ring features a large rounded. Flat bezel. The bezel measures 15mm in diameter. The center of the bezel has a nicely engraved LEGIONARY EAGLE. Now the actual Eagle design is one of the best that I have had in a while. Most of these rings have an engraved outline or picture of an Eagle but this example is an intaglio carved in deep relief. You can still see the minute details like the veining of the feathers and the features of the eagles face. You can even see his tongue darting out from his beak as he screeches! As you see in my pictures. There is only the slightest wear and we can tell that this w

Ancient Roman Celtic Bronze Eagle Brooch - 80 AD
A beautiful ancient Romano-Celtic eagle brooch. Dating to around 50– 175 AD. This beautiful brooch has a particularly attractive form. Producing a bold silhouette. The design does not simply seek to schematically represent an eagle, rather it has a strong sense of majesty, it is a piece of art, carefully thought through by its maker. Whilst ancient Celtic art was typically abstract. These zoomorphic brooches are more assertively figurative, reflecting Roman influence. Despite this, they still retain a separate aesthetic from Roman depictions of animals, producing a uniquely Romano-Celtic style. To be an equestrian you had to be rich. The highest class were the nobles of Rome. They were called'patricians' All the real power in Rome lay with them. The Roman Republic was a very successful government. It lasted from 510 BC until 23 BC- almost 500 years. The Roman empire in the en
