DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 288 pages. Publisher: Facts On File. Inc; 1996) ISBN: 0816030057. List Price $44.00] Long overshadowed by Greek mythology. Or treated peripherally in general texts on the ancient Roman world, Roman religion is finally accorded its due in this unique reference work. While perhaps most familiar in the context of Greek-influenced gods(Jupiter is to Rome what Zeus was to Greece" Roman religious life in fact encompassed a tremendous variety of deities, rites, and belief systems. From the Celtic God Abandinus to the pagan historian Zosimus, Dictionary of Roman Religion" contains more than 1,400 entries. Among the myriad of topics covered are: deities and spirits; festivals; sacrifices; temples, altars, and cult objects; burial rites; writers on religion; and historical religious events. Different religions within the Roman world. Such as Mithraism, Druidism, Judaism, and Christianity, are also discussed. Entries range from brief definitions to concise essays reflecting particularly important aspects of religious practice, and most include suggestions for further reading in addition to a complete bibliography. A glossary, 63 photographs and 65 line drawings, and extensive cross-references round out this singular perspective on religious life in the Roman world. Written by two experts in the field. Dictionary of Roman Religion" answers questions, makes connections, and sets Roman religion in its full context as no other source does. An essential reference for students, researchers, and teachers, as well as those interested in ancient religions, myths and legends, Roman society, and classical studies, this dictionary is a welcome and novel addition to the vast library on ancient Roman life. The Ruins and Excavations of Ancient Rome by Rodolfo Lanciani. With a New Foreword by Richard Brilliant. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 617 pages. ... morePublisher: Bell Publishing Company; 1979) ISBN: 0517289458. The crumbling ruins of ancient Rome serve as our most tangible link to the political. Social, and military greatness of the city of the Caesars. To the untrained eye these scattered stones and tarnished relics present an unfathomed array of styles, structures, and periods. But the story behind these relics is alive with everything that is human and vital; from glorious triumph or decadent corruption to the everyday traffic and commercial flux of urban life. Concealed in these ruins is the story of the organic development of the city from a collection of small farming towns to its ultimate position as capital of the largest unified state in the history of the western world. And it is Rodolfo Lanciani who has brought this story to abundant life. As Professor Richard Brilliant states in the foreword. the author’s infectious curiosity about Rome and his delight in her remains have been so successfully served by his friendly, unpedantic style. If Rome has so clearly built on the past, our knowledge of the past still depends very much on Lanciani. The author has placed the art and the architecture of the city on a time line, reflecting the constantly evolving ideas and spirit of the civilization as they developed over hundreds of years. In addition to this chronological approach, he has considered the structures and sites from topographical and architectural perspectives. Thus three systems of organization provide the prospective traveler or student with a detailed and stimulating knowledge of the ancient city that is ideally adaptable to his particular interest or area of study. The book is divided into four sections. The first is a general consideration of Rome’s topography and the way in which the city was adapted to it. Next is the description of the Palatine Hill. On which the city was founded and

Publisher: University of California Press; 1998) This animated and readable book will surprise readers who assume that erotic art is universal in its meaning. Author John R. Clarke asks. what did sex mean to the Romans? In offering his provocative and thoughtful answer, Looking at Lovemaking” examines Roman attitudes toward sex and toward race, ethnicity, physical deformity, and humor as well; and shows how radically the Roman’s conception of these ideas differs from ours today. This richly illustrated volume is the first study of ancient erotic art and sexuality to set these works, many of them newly discovered and previously unpublished, in their ancient context, and the first to define the difference between modern and ancient concepts of sexuality using clear visual evidence. To characterize a work of art as“erotic” summons ideas of illicit images to be kept out of public view. And yet Clarke shows us that Roman depictions of sex. In all its diversity, were very much in demand. Visual representations of sex between men, between women, and between men and women, all in a variety of positions and groupings, were produced in a range of media, from fine cameo-glass and silver vessels to wall-paintings and mosaics, to mass-produced ceramics. Marcus Aurelius: Meditations(Unabridged) Edited by William Kaufman. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 99 pages. Publisher: Dover Publications. Inc; 1997) ISBN: ... more048629823X. One of the world’s most famous and influential books. Meditations” by the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius(121-180 A.D. incorporates the stoic percepts he used to cope with his life as a warrior and administrator of an empire. Ascending to the imperial throne in 161 AD, Aurelius found his reign beset by natural disasters and war. In the wake of these challenges, he set down a series of private reflections, outlining a philosophy of commitment to virtue above pleasure and tranquility above happiness. Reflecting the emperor’s own noble and self-sacrificing code of conduct. This eloquent and moving work draws and enriches the tradition of Stoicism, which stressed the search for inner peace and ethical certainty in an apparently chaotic world. Serenity was to be achieved by emulating in one’s personal conduct the underlying orderliness and lawfulness of nature. And in the face of the inevitable pain, loss, and death; the suffering at the core of life, Aurelius counsels stoic detachment from the things that are beyond one’s control, and a focus on one’s own will and perception. Presented here in a specially modernized version of this classic George Long translation. This updated and revised edition is easily accessible to contemporary readers. It not only provides a fascinating glimpse into the mind and personality of a highly principled Roman of the second century, but also offers today’s readers a practical and inspirational guide to the challenges of everyday life. FORVM Roman Greece Barbotine Ware 5 1/2" Amphora 2nd Cent AD RARE
Roman Greece. Barbotine Ware Amphora, 2nd Century A.D. We are pleased to offer Alex G. Malloy's personal collection of Roman antiquities. Mr. Malloy. Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. From the collection of Alex G. Malloy. Former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. Barbotine is French for a ceramic slip. A mixture of clay and water used for decorating pottery. In English the term is used for two different techniques but here we are only concerned with the technique used in the ancient world. Barbotine is piped onto the object much like cakes are decorated with icing, using a quill, horn, or another kind of nozzle. The slip is often a color contrasting with rest of the vessel and forms a design, a pattern, or inscription, that ... moreis raised above the main surface. The Egyptians used barbotine decorative designs. Specimens have also been found at Minoan Knossos on the island of Crete. This example was found near Corinth. The style is certainly related to the Egyptian Barbotine ware but it may have been made in mainland Greece. AY36060. references: Barbotine ware amphora. Now retired but consulting for Forum, was a dealer in antiquities for 40 years. We hope you find a few nice pieces here to enhance your collection. From the collection of Alex G. Malloy. Former dealer in antiquities for 40 years. The statera is a type of Roman scale. Often called a Roman steelyard. The steelyard comprises a balance beam which is suspended from a pivot(or fulcrum) which is very close to one end of the beam. The two parts of the beam which flank the pivot are the arms. The arm from which the object to be weighed is hung is short and is located close to the pivot point. The other arm is longer, is graduated and incorporates a counterweight which ... morecan be moved along the arm until the two arms are balanced about the pivot, at which time the weight of the load is indicated by the position of the counterweight. LARGE ROMAN TERRACOTTA TRANSPORT AMPHORA, 100 - 200 AD
A large Roman buff/gray-ware terracotta two handled amphora. Ca. 100- 200 AD. The amphora has a plain neck, two strap handles with embossed ridges on the surface, also has an embossed symbol of a down-facing triangle with a semi-circular top at the base of each strap handle, perhaps a mark showing ancient ownership. There is a series of wavy and straight incised lines encircling the amphora in five locations along the surface of the main body. The bottom surface is somewhat flattened to allow the amphora to sit upright in soft sand. The surface has earthen debris in most of the crevices from almost two thousand years beneath the earth. Amphorae such as this were used to transport oil, wine and other foodstuffs around the Roman Empire. 19-1/2" 49.5cm) tall, 15" 38.1cm) maximum diameter, furnished with the metal tripod stand shown ... morein the photos. I will furnish a color photocopy(laminated in clear plastic) of an almost identical attributed amphora for complete. Permanent dating and culture documentation. OUTSTANDING VERY LARGE, HEAVY, ENCRUSTED ROMAN AMPHORA-FINE CONDITION
This is a wonderful example of a quite large Roman amphora. Its length is about 28 inches. The largest circumference is about 42 inches. The encrustations are wonderful. It is extremely well made and very heavy. It seems to have had a custom stand. Of which we have located what seem to be 2 of the 3 pieces of the stand. It comes with a very good provenance and guarantee of authenticity. An amphora this fine and with this pedigree has a value of $4.000- $6,000. Regarding shipping and delivery. Because it is so large and heavy, we will provide free delivery within a radius of 6 hours from southeast Vermont. We will also ship, but that will be quite costly: it will require a custom wood crate in additional to other safety precautions. The full cost could be close to $800, maybe more. So the shipping costs we have provided are just"quess-timates. ... morePlease do not pay until shipping has been discussed and an agreed invoice submitted.

Ancient Roman Terracotta pottery Amphora fragment
Up for auction is an ancient piece of Roman pottery. It looks like the upper portion of an Amphora. This came out of a collection in which I was told that it was from the area of northern Italy near Aquileia. Aquileia was attacked in 452 by Attila and destroyed. This Amphora fragment shows signs of marine life and makes a very decorative artifact. Please look at photos before bidding. this item measures about 5 inches high and about 8 inches wide. A very nice relic.
Grand tour Roman Bronze Boy with amphora Chiurazzi 19th century fake
Roman bronze boy with amphora.I thought this was authentic.I took it to a Dealer who used to sell Eygiptian and Roman antiques. He told me he had no reason to suspect it wasnt authentic and probably worth 100k.The patinabis so good and there are even lazurite crystals on the inner yhigh that you would expect to see with excavated bronzes. The style is perfect it even has inlaid copper eyes and phallus all consistant with roman bronzes.I sent pictures to sotherbys and they said no its Victorian. They provided me with a photo from a victorian catalogue from churazzzi. This foundery produced bronze fakes during the 19th century. They were the only company allowed by the goverment to make molds from origional relics. The hand is not broken on this bronze but an exact cast of the origional with with a damaged hand.you can see the individual dowel pins ... morewhere they would have fit into the hand and traces of oxidized lead.It is a superb fake. The company made bronzes in the early 20th century but these all seem to have a foundery mark and the patina is unconvincing as to be a real Roman Bronze.I had a good look to find the origional of this bronze and I couldnt find it.Hopefully Sotherbys is correct and this isnt Roman era.Brought back by a American serviceman after the war! I have included two other 20th century examples sold at auction made by the same firm but not as old.In the picture of the vase you can see it is also damaged at the base and has a wedge of lead added to level it off. Also another 20th century bronze boy by Roman Bronze works NY.you can see the patina is unconvincing and looks like a garden ornament. A nice fake to fool your curator friends. Height17"
Nice collection Roman pottery shards Romano Romain Römisch parts of amphora
Roman pottery shards found at Vechten(The Netherlands) Some information about Fectio Fectio. Modern Vechten, was a fort in the limes, the frontier zone of the Roman empire, situated at the site of the bifurcation of the rivers Rhine(which continued to the North Sea) and Vecht(to Lake Flevo and the Frisians) Numismatic evidence suggests that it was founded by the Roman general Tiberius(the future emperor) during the campaigns of 4/5. It was probably used as a military base during punitive raids. The civil settlement of Fectio was probably to the east of the fort. But excavation is not easy because there is a nineteenth-century military settlement on the site(Fort Vechten) However, the ancient fort itself is, together with Nijmegen, Vechten is one of the best excavated sites in the Netherlands; in 1894, it was the site of one of the first excavations ... moreof a Roman ship. In 40. The emperor Caligula visited Fectio when he was travelling to Lugdunum. The remains of a wine barrel from his personal vinyard have been found. Some thirty years later, the fortress was destroyed during the Batavian revolt and rebuilt as base of a cavalry squadron. The nearby Rhine had already started to silt up, and was later to change its course. Pottery from the kilns of the Tweny-second legion Primigenia at Xanten belongs to this period. During the reign of Antoninus Pius(138-161) the fort was again rebuilt. This time from brick and natural stone. However, by 200, the river had become silted-up and Fectio was no longer accessible by water. The military settlement was destroyed in 275 and not reoccupied. See also my other items.
