Very light porosity(surface pitting caused by contact with earth while buried) Professionally conserved. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Decorative piece of ancient Roman silver ornamentation. It was probably an ornamental appliqué for a belt or strap, though it could have also been an appliqué for a piece of furniture, wooden chest, or table implement. It’s hard to be certain, but it does appear as if it might have been originally fastened onto a leather strap or belt. In any event the appliqué was discarded or lost almost two thousand years ago. It shows minimal wear, and minimal porosity(surface pitting caused by burial in caustic or acidic soil conditions) Notwithstanding this evidence of usage in the ancient world. It is in wonderful condition, the engraving very sharp, and the artifact is quite handsome. It is the type of decorative ornamentation one would have expected to find on a belt or strap employed by a Roman Soldier. Many pieces of equipment and weaponry were carried on the person of a Roman Legionnaire, many held in place with belts(and buckles) and such ornamental appliqués were quite popular. You'll note the engraved concentric circle on the center of the applique. Very scarce Roman bronze horse fibula type brooch dating to the 1st-2nd centruy AD. Pin still intact and nice patina. This is very rare and unusual because it is a zoomorphic horse combined with a knee brooch. I have never seen a similar example. Provenance: Part of a large Austrian collection. Enameled Roman Bronze Bird Fibula(Brooch) CULTURE/ REGION OF ORIGIN: Roman Britain DATE: 2 nd Century AD DIMENSIONS: 2.6 cm(1.02 in. long DESCRIPTION: A superb example of a Romano-British enameled bronze zoomorphic brooch in the form of a duck or similar water bird. The animal's head is naturalisitically modeled. With the eyes and details of the long beak visible. The upper surface is nearly flat, depicting the bird's wings in a folded position, and is divided in cells for blue, red and white enamel inlay. Substantial amounts of the blue enamel and traces of both the red and white enamel survive. The underside includes the catch plate and hinge attachment for the now missing pin. The object is otherwise intact, with very smooth medium green patina. PROVENANCE: Oxfordshire. UK metal detecting find, declared not treasure and legally ... moreexported.
