TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish The First Crusade by Steven Runciman. ... moreDESCRIPTION: Softcover: 201 pages. Publisher: Cambridge University Press; 2005) When Pope Urban II rose to his feet to address the multitudes gathered before him at the Council of Clermont in 1095 A.D. His appeal was simple: let Western Christendom march to the aid of their brethren in the East. Whether the Crusades are regarded as the most tremendous and romantic of Christian expeditions or the last of the barbarian invasions, they remain one of the most exciting and colorful adventure stories in history. The reasons for joining the Crusade varied widely; remittance from penance, a desire to see the Holy Places, or greed for the power and booty to be captured in the East. But the prize at the end of it all, be it spiritual or temporal, of the Holy City of Jerusalem. An army of mounted warriors. Traveling with peasants, merchants and artisans, faced a journey over hostile terrain, meeting with unforeseen antagonism, desert heat, and the constant struggle to feed and water their troops and horses. Their journey's spectacular culmination was the long siege of Jerusalem, at the end of which the Crusaders, by a brilliant tactical maneuver, broke down its defenses and poured into the city which erupted in a bloody massacre. Steven Runciman's"History of the Crusades" is justly acclaimed as the most complete and fascinating account of the historic journey to save the Holy Lands from the Infidel. This abridgement makes accessible to a wider readership one of the most compelling historical narratives. CONDITION: New oversized softcover. Balgariya, IPA: b ɤ̞ɫˈɡ arij ɐ] Officially the Republic of Bulgaria(Република България, transliterated: Republika Balgariya, IPA: r ɛˈ publik ɐ b ɤ̞ɫˈɡ arij ɐ] Is a country in Southeast Europe. Bulgaria borders Romania to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. With a territory of 110,994 square kilometers(42,855 sq mi) it ranks as the 15th-largest country in Europe. The economy relies on local natural resources and the strongest sectors are heavy industry and agriculture. The emergence of a unified Bulgarian ethnicity and state dates back to the 7th century AD. All Bulgarian political entities that subsequently emerged preserved the traditions of the First Bulgarian Empire. Which at times covered most of the Balkans and became a cultural hub for the Slavs in the Middle Ages. With the downfall of the Second Bulgarian Empire in 1396, its territories came under Ottoman rule for nearly five centuries. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 resulted in the establishment of a third Bulgarian state, the independence of which was fully recognized in 1908. Ancient Romano-Celtic Bronze Ring with Stylized Motif 100-200 AD
About The Roman Jewelry Apart from gold and other precious metals. Romans used glass to make their jewelry. Roman jewelry gives us an insight into the culture of this ancient country. Just like other ancient civilizations. Rome also had its distinct strata of social classes. In the Roman society, jewelry was worn for indicating the social status of a person and attaching pieces of clothing rather than beautification. Gold was used by the artisans and jewelers for carving the adornments and jewelry as it was believed to be the metal of the Gods and supposed to have descended from the sun. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. Diamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the ... moresilk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. About the Roman Rings Romans liked to wear big rings which drew attention and revealed the status of the wearer. A gold ring often contained a huge gemstone or Roman glass which was generally worn by the Senators and the bureaucrats. The common people referred as the Plebeians were allowed to wear only rings made of iron. However. Some Plebeians were awarded the right to wear the golden rings for their bravery or special service to the state. But gradually such stringent rules were relaxed during the reign of Justinian I. Women of ancient Rome were more inclined to wear multiple rings of varied materials and designs on their hands without the constraints of social classes. About This Ring This incredibly solid treasure is a lovely example of a substantial. Well-constructed Roman-Celtic bronze ring with very bold and handsome features. The ring sports a large almond-shaped bezel which bears very deeply engraved lines and a surrounding border. The significance of the two engraved

Superb Ancient Romano Egyptian Banded Agate Intaglio of Serapis 2nd Century AD
On offer is superb Roman Egyptian banded agate intaglio of Serapis. Dating to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The intaglio is cut through a natural white layer of agate, into the orange carnelian agate beow to give depth and dimension. Once the impression was made in wax, the head stands proud in cameo form. The intaglio depicts the head of Serapis, in my opinion modelled in the guise of Emperor Caracalla(198- 217 AD) Serapis is depicted wearing a modius on his head, a classic attribute of this Graeco-Egyptian god who during the Roman period was used in Egypt in place of Jupiter. Emperor's being divine and worshipped as such, often portrayed themselves in the guise of various gods, Jupiter, Serapis and Hercules being favourites. This ringstone was likely originally mounted within a gold signet ring, worn by an administrator or goveneor, working ... morein Alexandria or another part of Roman Egypt. It is unlikely a military intaglio, with portraits of the gods and emperors being used mainly by priests and civil servants. The intaglio is in excellent condition and is suitable for remounting into a gold ring if desired! Ancient Romano-Celtic British Enamelled Bronze Bracelet - 50 AD
A rare and extremely well preserved Romano-Celtic enameled bronze bracelet. Dating to the 1st- 2nd century A.D. This sleek bracelet is cast in a solid bronze band with an overlapping design. Ornamented with inlaid champlevé red enamel in Celtic style. This piece is a fine example of the early Romano-British art form. By the early Roman period the native British mastery of bronze working was complete. Following the invasion. Some bronze smiths made items in the classical style, but others, especially those based in the north and west of England, continued to manufacture items with'Celtic' motifs, possibly as a sign of passive resistance to Roman rule. Writers such as Caesar. Diodorus Siculus and Strabo tell us that the ancient Britons were extremely ostentatious in their approach to physical appearance; tattooing their bodies ... moreblue with woad, wearing brightly coloured plaid clothes and bleaching their hair blonde with lime. Above all though, the Britons had a huge affinity for bronze and gold ornaments, as such bracelets such as this piece would have been worn as part of a striking attire, not only for show but to indicate a sense of belonging within their native community. The owner of this piece may well have hailed from the tribal regions of the those based in the north and west of England, where this style was particularly popular. Condition: Excellent. Unrestored. Height: 3 1/4 inches. Provenance: Ex. British private collection. Acquired 1980's, reputedly found in Britain in the 1980's with a metal detector. Ancient Romano-British Bronze Dragonesque Brooch - 50 AD
A rare Romano-British bronze dragonesque brooch. Dating to the 1st century A.D. Known as the dragonesque type. This expressive garment fastener is cast in the sleek and abstracted figure of a dragon. A particularly large example of the style, adorned with a series of rare oval motifs and incisions that would have held intricate champlevé enamel. With a flowing form that is pleasing to the eye, these pieces are amongst the most admired items of early British art. The dragonesque form of this artifact is typical of native British art styles. First appearing after the Roman conquest of southern England in AD 43, but emphasizing an indigenous artistic taste. The owner of this piece is likely to have hailed from the tribal lands of the Brigantes in the north of England, where this style was particularly popular. The Brigantes. Whose name ... moreroughly translates as the homage takers, were a federation of smaller clans ruled over by a single royal house. The Roman historian Tacitus believed the Brigantes territory to be the largest British kingdom in both size and population. These people were mostly pastoralists, walking the ancient paths of transhumance, moving their flocks and herds up the hill trails and onto the summer pastures, then back down to the valleys in the late autumn before the first snows fell. These brooches were functional fasteners as well as decorative objects, and would have held a thick fold of cloth to guard against the cold of the northern hills. To the city dwelling Romans. The semi-nomadic Brigantes seemed unsophisticated, indeed Caesar himself dismissed them as primitive, stating that: The people of the interior for the most part do not sow corn. But live on milk and meat and dress in skins" In actual fact. The Brigantes were highly organised and ultimately took far longer for the Romans to subdue than even the Iceni. Resistance, both passive and outright crackled on for many years before the area was truly contained. This beautiful piece of metalworking is a testament to the skill of the

Ancient Romano Egyptian Stylized Portrait of Seated Male with Phallus 300-100 BC
Ancient Romano Egyptian Stylized Portrait of a Seated Male with Phallus 300-100 BCE Apart from gold and other precious metals. Other than gold, the materials used in jewelry making were bronze, Roman glass, bone beads and precious gemstones which were excavated from far off places like Persia, Far East, Indus Valley, etc. ... moreDiamonds, emeralds and sapphires found their way from the silk route to the Roman land to appease the rich and mighty of this civilization. This very spectacular ancient Roman adornment depicts the stylized portrait of a seated male with a visibly large phallus. Its band bears a lovely symmetrical form and is smooth all around which makes for a very comfortable fit when worn today. A dark. Natural patina is retained all around with its original bright golden-hued bronze peeking out in areas of the surface of its large, oval-shaped bezel. There still exists today the popular belief that the‘fall of the Roman Empire’ was attributable to a great degree to sexual excess. But there is no good reason, academic or otherwise, to suppose that the Romans indulged in sexual excess compared with other peoples of antiquity or with ourselves. They were merely less reticent than some in talking about and depicting sexual matters. Rings of this type have been found in areas around Pompeii and at Pompeii itself. And probably represent Priapus, a deity who was always phallic. An early fertility god, his particular responsibility was with gardens and farms. The phallus was not just an erotic de

Ancient Romano British Silvered and Enameled Bronze Triskele Disc Brooch - 75 AD
A beautiful ancient Romano-British silvered and enamelled bronze disc brooch. Dating to 75– 200 AD. Decorated in vibrant red and green enamel. Larger than average and beautifully preserved, this bronze disc brooch is decorated with the Celtic triskele pattern, with wide arms terminating in small discs. The outer border of the brooch and triskele are silvered, with a small dot of silver also lying at the centre of the design. On the reverse, the pin has survived intact, a particularly rare occurrence. This lively piece dates from a period when the identity of those living in the Roman areas of the British Isles was changing rapidly. Not from Celtic to Roman, but embracing both cultures to create a unique fusion of artistic styles. With its origins deep in the prehistory of the Neolithic, the triskele pattern lying at the centre of this brooch ... moreis amongst the most ancient of all Celtic symbols, conversely the enamelled decoration that gives it its vibrancy is quintessentially Roman. This piece would have sparkled and gleamed at the midday market or in the candlelight of the dining hall, acting as a testament the wealth and importance of its owner. Yet it is much more than simply a decorative piece of jewellery; rich with meaning, it is a statement of identity, the ancient Briton who wore this brooch was proud of their Celtic heritage, but embraced their Roman future as well.
