With a piriform body reminiscent of a ripe pear, the neck is narrow, rising to a wide collared rim. The opening itself is tiny, so as to only allow its precious contents to sprinkle out slowly, giving the vessel its name. The glass a beautiful light green, decorated with a pattern of lathe cut bands across the body. Originally used to preserve oils and perfumes. This flask is near flawlessly preserved, indeed it is almost inconceivable that it is of such a great age. A beautiful ancient Roman green glass flask. Dating to the 4th century AD. Free blown. Composed of a beautiful olive green glass, the body in the shape of a ripe fruit hanging from a tree. The neck flaring, the small base slightly concave and with a prominent pontil mark(scar left behind from the ancient production process) The body is decorated with a series of carefully crafted shallow ribs which would have been tool worked whilst the glass was still soft. The style is highly suggestive of an origin within the eastern confines of the empire, likely the Levant. Many examples of this type can be termed somewhat crude. With little care taken or skill implied as to the overall form. This piece of glass is from between 100-600 AD and comes from someone who acquired this during travels. It was later given as a wedding gift.
