Brass Vow Cross, c. 1880, Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul
Offering an extremely rare religious artifact that was part of the habit of the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul ~ the solid European brass vow cross worn beneath the outer garments. This item is particularly unusual. And as a result there are very few available for purchase. The original Sisters of Charity founded in 1809 by Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton in Emmitsburg. Maryland later merged with the Paris based Daughters of Charity co-founded in 1633 by Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac. In 1850 the move began to change the black dress and cap of Mother Seton to the French habit consisting of a blue skirt and jacket. White collar and large white cornette. The cross measures 3.5 inched in length from the top of the bezel to the bottom of the cross post. And 1.75 inches wide. This cross serves as a reliquary, and at the time contained soil from the Holy Land, or in some instances, preserved relics of Vincentian saints. The brass screw at the base of the cross is missing, and as a result this cross opens to reveal the hidden iner chamber where the relics were formerly housed. This item is a rare artifact from a time when this particular religious community was beginning to thrive in America. And was well established in France. It will certainly increase in value as the Daughters of Charity, like all other religious orders, continue to shrink in numbers due to the vocation shortage at this time. Serious inquiries only.
