Antique Gilded Brass Reliquary Monstrance- Our Lady of Lujan- Stigmata Nails(Please see see more fine estate pieces in my eBay store. An estate find. An antique gilded brass Reliquary Monstrance having a central circular receptacle with a clear glass window front with a circular silver medallion depicting the figure of Our Lady of Lujan(Nuestra Senor de Lujan) the Patroness of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. This piece dates from 1890's to the early 1900's. The medallion may be the relic and is"loose" or been placed in the housing of the receptacle and is not attached. The receptacle has a hand fabricated cylindrical brass cap which can be removed by twisting it off. The reliquary receptacle is framed by a cast cruciform frame with four applied copper"nails" which pierce the frame at the directional points corresponding ... morewith the cruciform wounds of Jesus. The exterior of the frame is a filigree floral design with a cross finial at the top and at the bottom is attached to the central rod of the stand. The cast base is attached to the central rod and flares out in a six floral petal form. This artifact came from a Toronto family estate of avid collectors of Catholic religious objects which at one time were used in Catholic church communities, including Latin America. This antique reliquary was acquired in Latin America and has a patina on the surface which indicates that it was extensively handled, most likely in religious ceremonies. There are no hallmarks to indicate the maker of this item or the medallion in the housing. This item would make wonderful addition to any collection. Made of an unknown metal(presume a base metal of some sort) it is either gilded or painted. The viewing window is surrounded by 8 simulated red and green stones. It is marked Made In France on the back of the small handle. It has nice patina consistent with age. There is some discoloration ... morealong portions of the edge surrounding the viewing window and stem. The left arm of the cross has a slight bend. The theca is made from an unknown silver metal and shows some discoloration. It is about 1" in length. The gift/relic in the theca is labeled St. Veronica. There is an intact wax seal and threads. What makes this Monstrance unique is that it still has its True Cross Relic inside of it. The Monstrance has some loss of the gilding as seen in the pics and one small screw is also missing on the bottom of the relic holder ... morewhich does not detract from this rare item. The relic is original to the Monstrance as seen on the custom padded mounting. The Blessing Monstrance measures 7 inches in height and 2.75 inches wide. Likely from Mexico or South America, carved from wood into an altar-like shape and painted with floral filigree. It has a gold painted border and base, a handle on back and very old nails/spikes underneath its base, holding it together. Its top center has a circular window protected with glass, within it is a swirling crucifix, in its center is a balled-up piece of shiny red fabric(probably from a robe or religious garment) Surrounding it are written words, some a bit difficult to decipher; discernible is the name"Joseph" the rest are either names or latin phrases. It is in good condition for its age. Structurally sound and solid.
