RARE ANTIQUE POPE LEO XIII HARD COVER & FABRIC PHOTO ALBUM, METAL CLASP. 1800s
This is truly a rare and remarkable find. A beautiful tribute to Pope Leo XIII. His picture graces the front of this well preserved book, and as you can see in the photos, it's attached impeccably with tooled, raised edging. The binding is in great shape, and the book holds spaces for large and small photographs. The front cover is thick and hard, and the back and binding were crafted with a fabric that looks and feels like rich upholstery. As you can see, it has a working metal clasp that's ornate and in beautiful condition. The album was most likely created in the late 1800s to early 1900s, during the papacy of Leo XIII. This is an excellent choice for the collector, and as far as I can tell, you'd be hard-pressed to find another. It's difficult to say that it's one of a kind, but I have no evidence to support that this ... morewas made en masse. The album measures 11" x 9" and is 2 3/4" thick. There's a bit of wear to the back cover material and some aging to the photo pages, but there's no sign of water damage, no major rips or tears. Truly a lovely piece. It was a personal gift of Pope Leo XIII(1878-1903) to a Roman Curia Cardinal on occassion of his golden jubilee as a priest(50 years of priesthood) Later it got into possession of a Roman Monsignore and collector of relics who passed away in 2008. This an authentic piece of the collar worn by Pope Leo XIII in 1903. It's mounted in a black frame measuring 11 x 13 inches. The colored photo and relic is mounted in a 6 x 8 inch window in the center covered with glass. This comes with proper documentation and provenance as pictured in the two photos. Dated 2005.
