Very rare St. Audite. Bishop of Braga(Portugal) martyr relic! In a 19th century hard wood reliquaire(dimensions cm. 4.3 x 1.5; small defect at the edge as in the second picture) there is a cloth containing the relic. Above there is a cloth tape. Inscribed with ST. OVIDE MARTIR; the relic is sorrounded by four gold leaf stars with shining glass paste. According to 16th century hagiographic sources. S. Audito was a Sicilian Roman citizen; Pope St. Clement I, sent him to Braga in Portugal, where he became the third Bishop of the city( 95) and then martyred for the faith in 135. The Portuguese Braga called Ouvido( popular translation of Latin Gaspar) Which in the 16th and 17th centuries erupted into Ovid, so much so that on the previous tombstone placed over his tomb in the Cathedral of Braga. Unable to secure the election of any of the prominent candidates, the cardinals finally, after a conclave of four months and twenty days, resorted to the old expedient of electing a cardinal of advanced years; they united upon Cardinal Altieri, an octogenarian, whose long life had been spent in the service of the Church, and whom Clement IX, on the eve of his death, had raised to the dignity of the purple. The reason a prelate of such transcendent merits received the cardinalate so late in life seems to have been that he had waived his claims to the elevation in favour of an older brother.
