All this is fitted masterly inside a silvered 2.5 inch pectoral opening crucifix. The cross is an ebony inlaid one. The corpus rests on the inlay and it opens by a hinge mechanism that clicks into place and then screwed tight with the fastening nut. Very solidly too. This is from around 1880-1900 and was probably acquired by an Austrian Pilgrim in Rome. St. Pius X was born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto on June 2. 1835 in the little Italian town of Riese, in the province of Treviso near Venice. His father was Giovanni Sarto, a cobbler by trade, who was also caretaker of the city hall and the town's postmaster; his mother was Margherita Sanson, a seamstress. The family had few worldly goods and the early life of young Giuseppe, eldest of eight surviving children, was a difficult one. He attended the parish school and while there, his intelligence and high moral character attracted the notice of the pastor, who arranged a scholarship for the lad at the high school in Castelfranco, a larger town two miles from Riese. Antique 7" Pectoral Reliquary Cross Relic Crucifix Vintage
These reliquary cross's are not very common and are quite collectible. Especially this style. The inside compartment contains some beautiful relics. The cross is a silver toned metal with a wood inlay. It measures approx. 7" x 3 7/8" Relic cross's that are this size are extremely rare. This is in excellent condition. Antique Wood Brass Catholic Reliquary Crucifix Cross Pectoral Saints (13) Rubies
Vintage wood and brass crucifix cross reliquary measuring 3" tall without the hanging ring or screw closure at the base and 1 1/2" wide. A few small gouges to the brass. Two 1/8" cracks in the wood on the back at the hand nails but the wood is in no danger of falling off. Inside the cross are labels. Not all of the letters can be seen as they are quite tiny spaces. Reads as follows: Gerard; Rom. A; Bened. M; Nicol, Leonard; Severi. Libori, Urbana; Vitalis, Vinc. M; Respic; Afrae, Galli, A. Under each label are thirteen little chunks I cannot decipher and I will not disturb the labels to inspect under those further. Whatever they may be, they are being gifted with the cross. Between each label there are and were in the past stones. There are three faceted red stones that appear to be rubies. There are six pearl beads with hollowed ... moreout holes. There are seven empty spaces where it appears there once were glued or secured stones. I am just speculating but I believe the pearl beads were added later and at one time all the labels had faceted rubies in between and most of the rubies either fell out or were taken out on purpose. The base is silk ribbon with a silk roping trim. The case is locked closed with the screw in knob. Other than the INRI plaque(Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews) there is no writing or other markings. In researching, it appears this may have been a pectoral cross worn by Catholic Nuns. I cannot be sure of this as I had purchased it at an estate auction. It appears to have some good age as the brass is somewhat tarnished and having nice worn edges. The original piece must have been simply gorgeous as well as cherished. I will ship this item boxed USPS Small Flat Rate and securely packed with insurance to cover the bid.
