There are 4 in all, each offered separately, so look through to find them. This alter crucifix styled one is magnificent! Large in size at 18" tall and 8.5" widest with a 6.25 x 4.25 oval base, made in fine old French cast brass alloy. ... moreWithin the 1" deep recess, once cover is removed, you see that the original relic still has its original seal in place, too. It includes fine old red felt with sequins and gold thread embroidery as decorative interior and 4 relics, each with hand written identification label. The card and paper relic retains not only the original undamaged cover glass, but also the original wax seal(view in detail in our photos) and is in exceptionally fine condition throughout. Dating early to mid-1800s, these would have been made by nuns in various convents, and the seal will determine from which this one originated. I am not an expert in all of the seals, unfortunately, and do not have ID for this one's origin, sorry. Hi. What an incredible reliquary! Containing a 5" section of Saint Julias. Veteran Soldier. Please see below for more information about this miraculous saint! This was part of a French Archbishop's major relic collection. In his hand written inventory. He listed this as a" cathédrale reliquairy de l'évêque. Beziers, St. Jlias, Vet. M. or"Cathedral bishop's alter relic. Beziers Cathedral, Saint Julias, Veteran" also known as" Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse de Béziers" whose bishophricate was terminated in 1800's. That means that while the cathedral remained. It was no longer the seat of a bishop. Many such"demotions" occurred after the revolution, not as a punishment or true demotions, but more as a reorganization under the new order. It is not unusual ... morefor a Cathedral relic to be removed and to change hands during this time. Not all Catherdral relics were truly owned by the Cathedral which housed it, but oftentimes"lent" to the Cathedral by an ecclesiastic or bishop. Who had the rights to remove the relic and/or gift it. This gorgeous reliquary stands almost 16" high. It is made of brass gilded with 24 karat gold. Inside is housed a HUGE relic of saint Julian. Soldier, Martyr. Arm. The relic is sealed with a wax seal on the top, and also on the underside of the reliquary with 4 red silk threads and a perfect wax seal. The entire relic is covered with a bell Shaped crystal cover. The relic is marked, and written S. Julian, Maytyr. The relic itself measures 5" high. The entire reliquary weighs 6.3 pounds. It has a"roof" and cross which is removable to access the relic, although the relic is completely sealed 2 times. You can touch the actual relic, but not remove it. I am proud to offer a rare rel iquary in Christianity- an antique wooden altar plate/ Icon with document. Once used to house a relic of S. Nicholas of Myra The reliquary is definitely pre-1800. But I expect it is much older. On the front of the plate is a handwritten ancient document. I think it is Latin. But it is not possible for me to decipher(I tried to read some words such as"Anno domini" and"decembris" but I am not sure, whether I am right) I expect. The ancient document explains or confirms the relic, that was formerly housed in a compartment on the back. The relic on the back went lost during the centuries. The wooden plate has strong signs of age. There are lots of holes of wood worms(inactive) The wood is very fragile with some stress cracks. The metal hanger on the back is from a later date. This extraordinary late 1700s folk art piece combines diverse techniques and materials to create an object of great beauty and spirituality. It measures 17 ¼” x 15 ¼” x 3” deep and is housed in a hand carved. Gessoed and gilt wood shadowbox frame with crisp classical details. Inside, an elaborate baroque altarpiece has been created from curled paper, embossed gold and silver tinsel, turned cow bone and marbled papers. In the center is an entirely hand painted miniature portrait of Saint Anthony and the Child Jesus with accompanying relic fragment on the bottom of the frame.
