Antique Quack Medical Device In Fitted Wood Box - The Flemming Battery Co. Phila
This is manufactured by the Flemming Battery Company. Philia. It is in a wood box which is 9" long, 4-5/8" wide and 7" high. The long bar with the ball on the end moves up and down. There is a provision for a key on the front, but that is missing. There are 2 levers that can be placed in 4 different positions and two levers with two positions. What you see is what you get. I don't know what it was supposed to do. But I can guess. There is a battery operated coil on one end and as the lever with the ball bounces up and down the electrical connection is broken. I imagine that this causes an intermittent shock of varying levels. It is a cool gadget. Everyone should have one. One that includes a landmark Ohio State Supreme Court case that set trademark law precedent. In 1887. While still working for the family newspaper, Leonard Glessner started the Glessner Medicine Co. with a recipe for what he sold as Dr. Drake's German Cough and Croup Remedy. An interesting side note is that there was real live Dr. Drake living and practicing in Findlay at the time. Glessner had gotten the rights to his Dr. Drake's recipe from a real Dr. Drake of Iowa. The Dr. Drake of Findlay felt he was losing out on money. And also that Glessner didn't have the right to use his name. So the Findlay Dr. Drake started selling a competitive product, similarly named and marketed, in Findlay with the Dr. Drake name. Naturally. Glessner and the Findlay Dr. Drake sued each other. In a nutshell, Drake lost, since he was not the original Dr Drake, and Glessner had the rights to the original Dr. Drake name, and that one cannot trade mark a person's name, and that the Findlay Dr. Drake was guilty of fraud as he had purposely intended to deceive his customers. Of course now that we have matured as beings of the 21st century, we know these are just really cool( beautiful) devices used to exploit the new miracle of Electricity. I could go on& on but it is getting late& you all know what these will& won't do. I will say this guy does work very well at making the 11 included gas filled"probes" glow a brilliant violet. The wiring is intact& well insulated. I did not hesitate to plug this guy in& give it a good testing. I am however( as with all the electronics I offer) selling this device as-is& as a collectors piece. The attached hand unit seems to made of Bakelite. Side of box says this item was used for: Tonic. Nervine and antispasmodic. A valuable uterine tonic and useful in the headaches attendent on uterine derangement. Many of the companies who were able to continue manufacturing violet rays after the depression, stopped making them due to when they began manufacturing radio coils or other electrical components for the war instead. A typical violet ray device consisted of an ungrounded electrical control box that controlled the interrupter and which housed the magneto coil. And an attached bakelite or other handle housing which contained the high voltage coil and an insertion port for attachments. Glass evacuated tubes of varying shapes and for different therapeutic uses could be inserted into the bakelite handle to apply the resulting current to different parts of the body.

Vintage Bleadon-Dun Co. Violetta Quack Medical Device Working This is a vintage quack medical device made by the Bleadon-Dun Co. Chicago. This particular item is not marked but this company made one very similar called the Violetta. It is serial number 111860 and the paper label on the inside of the case is dated Jan 16-21. Included is the carrying case with built-in transformer. Wand, and 2 glass electrodes. It appears to be in very good condition. The cloth cords are in great shape, the glass electrodes are free of any chips, cracks, or breaks, and the case is also in good shape just showing some wear. I tested the unit by connecting it to a lamp socket and the transformer buzzed. I attached the wand and tested both electrodes and they both seem to function properly. On the inside of the case is a knob to adjust the intensity and it seems ... moreto work. I'm not sure what attachments originally came with this unit but I am including everything that I got with it. I am selling this vintage quack medical equipment As-Is, As-Pictured. Up for auction here is an extremely rare quack medicine apparatus made by The Flemming Electro-Med App. Man'fd. I would perceive this was meant as some sort of shock-treatment device for arthritis and nerve diseases. However there is very little information I can find on this particular brand of quack med apparatuses. Compared to other's I've seen, this appears to be an earlier or later, far less complicated version, or a sort of"Budget" version of the more intricate varieties out there. Most likely pre-1900. It's basically a small battery housed in a wood box, with 4 small ports in which a small wire can be attached. There's also some form of screw, that when turned, bows a small metal tab. This is to possibly change the frequency? There's also two more hand screws that have 2 wires that are touching the ... morebase of the studs, making them electrically charged. There is a small metal nub on the right side that can be accessed via a small hole on the side of the box. I can only assume this is how the battery was recharged or powered. The box itself is a very attractive. Dark stained mahogany or rosewood I believe. A small drawer is on the bottom right side, with a circular metal tab holding it in place. The latch is VERY interesting: the bottom half has a small brass hook on a loose spinning axis, and the top has a"Lock" on a similar loose spinning axis. The carry handle is rather ornate. On the back of the box, THE FLEMMING ELECTRO-MED APP. MAN'FD OTTO FLEMMING PHILADELPHIA" is stamped. The battery box and metal tab are similarly stamped. There appears to be some missing parts. There's a Bakelite box that looks similar to what they used to use to house batteries. It is empty and has a small crack in it. There is one set of wires which is actually two wires bound together. I have a feeling there was originally another set of these. But I could be wrong. There is no fraying or damage to the wires. I do not know what originally came with this apparatus, so besides

McINTOSH GALVANIC & FARADIC BATTERY CO. CATALOG BROCHURE 1880s QUACK MEDICINEs
Here's a rare catalog from the McIntosh Galvanic and Faradic Battery Company of Chicago. This was a major early manufacturer of quack devices. Generally meant to deliver electric shocks to patients to cure any number of diseases. Electricity was a mysterious, almost magical thing at the time, and charlatans took full advantage of it to separate the gullible from their money. Think you need an electric bathtub? This company would have sold you one. The catalog is undated. But the company operated under this name from 1881 to 1889. One illustration in this catalog shows an 1883 patent date, so this catalog must be from the 1883 to 1889 period. The company name was changed in 1889 and it went out of business in 1897 a few years after the death of its founder. I guess his devices didn't help him. The catalog is 14 pages. Including the ... morecovers, and measures about 6 by 9 inches. It is in very good condition, but there are a couple of minor tears, and horizontal creases in two places which affect all pages. Probably it was originally mailed in a standard sized envelope. It is complete, no writing, no staining, but there is mild age-related toning. The staples are shiny, and there is no unpleasant odor, so it was never in a damp location. It will be packed in plastic and sandwiched between pieces of cardboard to protect it in transit.
