Michelangelo and the Pope’s Ceiling by Ross King. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 373 pages. Publisher: Penguin Books; 2003) ISBN: 0142003697. In 1508. Despite ... morestrong advice to the contrary, the powerful Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the newly restored Sistine Chapel. With little experience as a painter(though famed for his sculpture David) Michelangeo was reluctant to begin the massive project. Michelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling recounts the four extraordinary years Michelangelo spent laboring over the vast ceiling while the power politics and personal rivalries that abounded in Rome swirled around him. Battling against ill health, financial difficulties, domestic problems, the pope's impatience, and a bitter rivalry with the brilliant young painter Raphael, Michelangelo created scenes so beautiful that they are considered to be among the greatest masterpieces of all time. A panorama of illustrious figures converged around the creation of this magnificent work, from the great Dutch scholar Erasmus to the young Martin Luther. Ross King skillfully weaves them through his compelling historical narrative, offering uncommon insight into the intersection of art and history. CONDITION: NEW. Unblemished except VERY slight edge/corner wear and rubbing to the covers. Just the normal slight wear expected in a new book caused by the book being shelved next to others. VERY minimal wear consistent with new stock from an open-shelf book store. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Satisfaction guaranteed. The Romance of King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table by Sir Thomas Malory. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: ... more501 pages. Publisher: Weathervane Books; 1977) ISBN: 0517231360. This vigorous. Eloquent epic tale of valor is noted for having been written in the best English prose of the Fifteenth Century. The accompanying illustrations are, of course, a perfect example of the best illustrations of any century. The characters will be familiar: Lancelot and Guinevere, Tristan and Isolde, for this is the definitive account of the Arthurian legends, and Pollard's is the definitive abridgement. His preface says: The story of King Arthur and his knights is one of the greatest that men have ever made. Greater by far than that of Charlemagne, which had come into fashion a little earlier, greater perhaps even than the tale of Troy, already some 2,000 years old, which for some centuries it eclipsed. It is through the fifteenth century prose of Sir Thomas Mallory, in which homeliness and nobility go hand in hand, that it holds its place in our hearts. But the story itself was the outcome of the second half of the twelfth century and the beginning of the thirteenth, the days of England’s Henry II and his three turbulent sons Geoffrey, Richard Coeur de Lion, and John. In the days when the Arthurian romances were coming into existence. Violence, cruelty, and luxury were rampant. But the greatness of these evils called forth some great virtues to counter them. This story bears traces of these and is penetrated to its very core by the special virtues of days in which men were content to live dangerously, carrying their lives in their in their hands and willing to lay them down lightly rather than break the rules of the game or be faithless to work or friend. CONDITION: This is the special. Illustrated edition with 32 illustrations(illustrated by Arthur Rackham, 16 color, 16 black + white) Book has clearly never been read, the inside of the book is pristine. Pages are clean, crisp, un

Publisher: Insomniac Press; 2004) MacEwen sets out to write a deeply serious novel that also functions as entertaining historical fiction. The novel's hero is Akhenaton. Pharaoh of Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty, who was the first ruler to introduce the idea of monotheism. Akhenaton's single-mindedness in his quest for his own brand of reason is a powerfully paradoxical distillation of the artistic temperament: originality, fertility and beauty set against death and despair and an inability to love. Author Gwendolyn MacEwen was born in Toronto in 1941. The author of numerous books of award-winning poetry. Including A Breakfast for Barbarians, The Shadow-Maker and The T.E. To avoid this irksome duty they devised the shabti. A figurine which they hoped would deputize for them on being activated by the appropriate magic spell. If the idea smacks of'draft-dodging' the figures are nevertheless of considerable artistic interest, and provide information about Egyptian religion, society, personal names, titles, etc. The iconography, inscriptions, materials and manufacture are described with criteria for identifying and dating the various types. TRANSLATE Arabic Chinese French German Greek Indonesian Italian Hindi Japanese Korean Swedish Portuguese Russian Spanish Rivers in Time: The Search for ... moreClues to Earth's Mass Extinctions by Peter D. Ward. DESCRIPTION: Published at $75.50] Hardback with Dust Jacket: 315 pages. Publisher: Columbia University Press; 2000) Several times in the distant past. Catastrophic extinctions have swept the Earth, causing more than half of all species, from single-celled organisms to awe-inspiring behemoths, to suddenly vanish and be replaced by new life forms. Today the rich diversity of life on the Earth is again in grave danger, and the cause is not a sudden cataclysmic event but rather humankind's devastation of the environment. Is life on our planet teetering on the brink of another mass extinction? In this absorbing new book, acclaimed paleontologist Peter D. Ward answers this daunting question with a resounding yes. Elaborating on and updating Ward's previous work. The End of Evolution" Rivers in Time" delves into his newest discoveries. The book presents the gripping tale of the author's investigations into the history of life and death on Earth through a series of expeditions that have brought him ever closer to the truth about mass extinctions, past and future. First describing the three previous mass extinctions; those marking the transition from the Permian to the Triassic periods 245 million years ago; the Triassic to the Jurassic 200 million years ago; and the Cretaceous to the Tertiary 65 million years ago, Ward assesses the present devastation in which countless species are coming to the end of their evolution at the hand of that wandering, potentially destructive force called"Homo sapiens" The book takes readers to the Philippine Sea. Now eerily empty of life, where only a few decades of catching fish by using dynamite have resulted in eviscerated coral reefs, and a dramatic reduction in the marine life the region can support. Ward travels to Canada's Queen Charlotte Islan

DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: If you have any interest in archaeology or the origins of mankind. This is a MUST READ. Acclaimed both by critics as well as the general public– the story of one of the most significant finds ever of Paleoanthropology. 409 pages. Publisher: Simon and Schuster; 1981) When Donald Johanson discovered a partial skeleton. Approximately 3.5 million years old, in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia in November of 1974, he knew he had stumbled onto something unique. Bursting with all the suspense and intrigue of a fast-paced adventure novel, and filled with lively, up-to-the-minute scientific detail and marvelous illustrations in color and black-and-white, this significant book unfolds the extraordinary discovery of“Lucy” the oldest, most complete, best-preserved skeleton of any erect-walking human ancestor ever found, and the first new species to be named in more than 15 years. The book reveals the controversial change Lucy makes in our view of human origins, and provides a vivid, behind-the-scenes account of the entire history of paleoanthropology; as well as the eccentric, colorful characters who are and were a part of it. In January 1979. Johanson’s startling“official” announcement of his discovery of Lucy(which is how the world knows her, from the Beatle’s song“Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” even though her scientific name is Australopithecus afarensis) was an event that captured headlines, catapulted a young, relatively unknown American paleoanthropologist into international acclaim, and created a spirited, ongoing controversy among experts; including most notably Mary and Richard Leakey, in this wonderfully enigmatic field of fierce rivalries and astonishing breakthroughs. Chronicles of The Celts by Iain Zaczek. DESCRIPTION: Softcover: 159 pages. Publisher: Sterling Publishing Company. Inc. 1996) ISBN: 0806999489. The Celtic ... moreworld. As it existing in three separate countries with a common spirit and tradition; Ireland, Wales, and Brittany, is brilliantly revealed in these exciting epic chronicles with 120 evocative photographs of artifacts, manuscripts, and landscapes that bring the Celtic world to life as never before. Ireland, land of ancient warriors who value nothing higher than fame and courage as they battle magical forces pitted against them. Ancient warriors whose deeds are as noble and mysterious as the hill forts and standing stones scattered around the landscape. Ancient warriors whose love of exaggeration and boasting compare with the most extravagant blarney. These are the Celts revealed by the early Irish chronicles. Wales. A land of bands and druids hemmed into a beautiful, mountainous country where King Arthur roamed with his knights. The Welsh warriors saw themselves as defenders of the west, heroes who would one day hurl the foreign oppressors back into the sea. These dramatic chronicles date back to the Middle Ages, but they are truly much older than that. They tell of love and betrayal, of quests and challenges, of supernatural creatures and of murder. Battling dragons. Tyrants, and sorcerers, the warriors of Brittany were people of the sea. Hermits, missionaries, mystics, they passed down their tales of mystery and magic orally through the centuries. They are captured here from a time when the old pagan days were dying out, and the secret, supernatural skeins of the early mystical Celts were quickly attaching themselves to a new religion. PARNHAM PARK- ANTIQUE ENGLISH FURNITURE, TEXTILES, SILVER & ANTIQUES -Christie's
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Parham Park. Pulborough, West Sussex. Selected Furniture, Works of Art, Silver, Textiles, Costume, Linen, European Porcelain and Glass” The catalog to an auction held in London by Christie's on May 13-14. 1996. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A selection of very fine antiques- superb English furniture. Silver and ceramics, and an extraordinary assortment of antique linens& textiles. Parham Park is an Elizabethan house in Cootham. Between Storrington and Pulborough, West Sussex, South East England, originally owned by the Monastery of Westminster and granted to Robert Palmer by King Henry VIII in 1540. The foundation stone was laid in 1577 by the two year old Thomas Palmer, and Parham has been a family home ever since. Thomas Bishopp(later Sir Thomas Bishopp, 1st Baronet) bought ... moreParham House in 1597. For 325 years his descendants continued to live at Parham House Estate until January 1922. Then in 1922 the Hon. Clive Pearson, younger son of Viscount Cowdray, bought Parham from Mary, 17th Baroness Zouche in her own right, and he and his wife Alicia opened the house to visitors in 1948, after the Second World War when it had also been home to evacuee children and Canadian soldiers. Off the Long Gallery at the top of the house there is a fascinating exhibition which touches on the period between 1922 and 1948, with many family photographs as well as photographs of the building works which took place during that time. Mr and Mrs Pearson, followed by their daughter Veronica Tritton, spent more than 60 years carefully restoring Parham and filling it with a sensitively chosen collection of beautiful old furniture, paintings and textiles, also acquiring items originally in the house. There is a particularly important collection of early needlework. What they created at Parham is a rare survival of mid 20th Century connoisseurship within a major Elizabethan house. Now owned by a charitable trust, Parham House and Gardens are surrounded by some 875 acres(3.54

Maxim Karolik. 1893-1963” By Brian O'Doherty. Published in Boston by the Museum of Fine Arts in 1963. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: Maxim Karolik(1893-1963) was a Russian opera singer. Immigrant, and art collector and benefactor who cut a swath through the Boston and American collecting scenes. The magnificent bequests of American furniture and paintings he and his wife made to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts earned them a place in the pantheon of Boston’s patrons of the arts. A December 22. 1941 article in Time noted- With the aid of a Russian-born tenor, Boston's Museum of Fine Arts has acquired a million-dollar gift in the form of a collection of its own choosing. The museum, already the possessor of one of the best public collections of early American arts and crafts, has for six years been helping Patron Maxim ... moreKarolik pick up the best American antiques in the 13 original colonies. Not very successful as a tenor, furrow-browed, gesticulating Vocalist Karolik 13 years ago married Martha Codman, a member of one of Boston's best families, whose personal fortune was estimated at five million. Installed in a marble mansion in Newport, Karolik, inspired by the workmanship displayed in his wife's inherited family relics, decided to make early American antiques his hobby. Badly needing advice, he made a deal with the Boston Museum of Fine Arts: they should guide and direct him in making purchases, he would present the completed collection to the museum. Never had any of Boston's own sons so delighted her museum. Armed with Mrs. Karolik's introductions to some of the oldest families, the museum's Decorative Arts Curator Edwin James Hipkiss and Collector Karolik knocked on doors from New Hampshire to Georgia, rooted out many an old desk, clock, silver tankard, portrait. While Curator Hipkiss pointed out good and bad features, Collector Karolik asked questions, absorbed information. To old New England and Philadelphia matrons, startled at the idea of selling American antiq
