An Interesting Auction Catalog- Americana from the Collection of M. Austin and Jill R. Fine” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on January 30. 1987. Sale 5552. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The auction sale of a fine collection of American folk art and related furniture and accessories. A January 30. 1987, New York Times story about the auction noted- I wanted a bowl for the dining-room table. Jill R. Fine said, recalling how she and her husband, M. Austin Fine, began their 25-year pursuit of Americana. Most of the couple's collection- 338 ceramics, paintings, pieces of furniture, quilts and weathervanes-is to be auctioned today at 10:15 A.M. and 2 P.M. at Sotheby's, York Avenue at 72d Street, in a sale the auction house estimates will total between $755,000 and $1 million. I started ... moreit all- but he became the collector, Mrs. Fine said by telephone from Maryland, adding that since the sudden death a year ago of her husband, an executive in a vending machine company, she had made some changes in her life. I felt there was more than I really wanted to be responsible for in the collection, Mrs. Fine explained. When the couple began collecting, she said, they were redecorating a 19th-century farmhouse in a suburb of Baltimore, and ceramics were on her mind. The Fines visited dozens of antiques dealers between Virginia and Vermont, including Mary Allis, a major folk-art dealer in Fairfield, Conn. whom they were told had some pearlware worthy of investigating. We walked out that day with a cup and saucer and three folk-art paintings, Mrs. Fine said.
