Illinois manufacturer and has their distinct star, the other one is IXI with a number but very hard to read. They could be used as bookends, doorstops or as decor. Measure aprox. 6.5"long x 3.5"wide x 5" tall- weigh about 6 lbs. each. All I can say is that I am VERY happy to use my sleek. Modern, electric iron. The model with 8 temperature settings, a blast of steam and'auto shut-off' when I forget to unplug it! I know I would not have fared well living in the 1800's! Interesting Flat irons& Sad irons facts. Blacksmiths started forging simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages. Plain metal irons were heated by a fire or on a stove. Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped in a pad or thick rag. Some irons had cool wooden handles and in 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. This stayed cool while the metal bases were heated and the idea was widely imitated. The sad in sad iron(or sadiron) is an old word for solid. And in some contexts this name suggests something bigger and heavier than a flat iron. You'd need at least two irons on the go together for an effective system: one in use. And one re-heating. Large households with servants had a special ironing-stove for this purpose. Some were fitted with slots for several irons, and a water-jug on top. At home. Ironing traditional fabrics without the benefit of electricity was a hot, arduous job. Irons had to be kept immaculately clean, sand-papered and polished. They must be kept away from burning fuel, and be regularly but lightly greased to avoid rusting. Beeswax prevented irons sticking to starched cloth. Constant care was needed over temperature. Vintage RARE Cast Iron Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets BUZZ book ends door stops old
lane cedar chest*Many pictures below in listing* Very cool. Unusual and rare old pair of Georgia Tech cast iron"Buzz" bookends, circa 1920-1980. Possibly independently made. Very cool pair of heavy iron bookends. Having some trouble with these. No others or others from other schools with same build can be found- they have characteristics of cast iron objects made from 1940-1960s. They have the look, feel, patina, etc of something with that age. The Buzz figures area also slightly different from standard Tech Buzz. Slightly different styling with more straight angular mouth, antennae a little shorter and more straight up. Wings are very similar, but only one visible. Only one eye shown. Also, of course the font of the"G" is pretty old school, very similar to typical industrial fonts found in first half of 20th century. ... morePerhaps an early independent project by a student or engineer/craftsman at a foundry who went to Tech? Regardless of their age. From 20 to 80 years old, they are exceptionally appealing objects and just cool things to show off. I believe original or very old paint is the silver. When wiping them down, some oxidation came off with the silvery finish underneath. 7.25" tall. 6" wide, 1.75" deep at base. Heavy. Very good condition with surface oxidation and irregularities. No structural flaws. I am leaving as is, these could clean up or be painted as you wish; I like them as-is and will leave you the option. They are appx. 9 3/4" tall. They appear to have been repainted/restored in the recent past. One has the green T. And the other has a black T. I did not see any chips in the paint, but I am human and might have overlook something, look at the pics and judge for yourself, they look awesome to me. Along the bottom of the base of the door stops are the first lines of two different Robert Burns poems. The first door stop shown reads. Wee, modest, crimson-tipped flower, Thou's met me in an evil hour; from the 1786 poem titled“To a Mountain Daisy, After Turning One Down with the Plow” The second door stop has the first line from the poem" To a Mouse. On Turning Her Up in Her Nest with the Plough" It reads. Here. I have a pair of Cast Iron Boot Jacks up for auction. They are in original intact condition. One is ever so slightly larger than the other.I mean we're talkin' 1/8" in width and 1/4" in length. The antennae are slightly different in width. Too, perhaps to fit different size boots? But the difference, again, is small: 4.25" vs. 4.5" I think of them as: One male and one female! It is possible that one is an actual antique and the other a reproduction.but I am not sure. And if one is a reproduction I am sure it was done a long time ago as we have had these in the house since the 1950's. One. The larger of the two, bears markings struck into the underside: A number 1 at the head, the letter B on the body, and at the tail-end a number 2. I have no idea of what these represent. I don't know the age of them. But they're really heavy. There's a man on one bench and a lady on the other. They are painted, but have some dirt and paint loss from over the years. For auction is a set of 2 cast iron ram sheep. One is black faced and the other is white faced. They are both horned sheep. The black faced sheep has felt on his hooves. His face and legs are black and his horns and hooves are grey. Both these sheep are worn and have an aged look. Some paint chipping is evident.
