Egypt: People. Gods, Pharaohs by Rose-Marie& Rainer Hagen. DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 240 pages. Publisher: Taschen; 2003) This is a ... morehuge. Very heavy and high quality art book filled with descriptions of life in ancient Egypt and with absolutely superb full color plates. It is a presentation quality publication. The world’s first strike took place in 1152 B.C. We do not know how many workers laid down their tools, but we do know why they did so. They had not been paid their rations of grain and oil, and so the tomb workers in the Valley of the Kings went on strike. In modern times, the ancient history of Egypt has only been about its rulers and monumental architecture. You will certainly find the Pyramid of Cheops and the Temples of Ramesses and Hatshepsut in this book. But what you will also find is an account of a long-neglected side of Egyptian history: the people’s everyday lives. How did they picture the world? What sort of relationship did men and women have to each other? How did they spend their leisure time? And why did they develop such a perfect technique of preserving the body after death in the form of a mummy; as light as a blown egg and as hard as a statue” The authors investigate stimulating questions and dare to take a fresh look at an ancient past that seems much more real to us from this new perspective. Rose-Marie Hagen was born in Switzerland and studied history as well as the Romance languages and literature. After longer study periods in France and Florence. She began lecturing at different institutions including the American University in Washington, D.C. Rainer Hagen was born in 1928 in Hamburg, and graduated in literature and theatre studies in Munich. He went on to work for radio and TV where his latest position has been as chief editor for Northern Germany’s public broadcasting service. CONDITION: Unblemished except VERY slight shelfwear to dustjacket. Pages are pristine; clean. Crisp, unmarked, unmutilated, tightly bound, unambiguously unread. Condition is entirel

UNDERSTAND EVALUATE & COLLECT ANTIQUE AMERICAN FURNITURE - KIRK CLASSIC BOOK
American Furniture. Understanding Styles. Construction, and Quality” By John T. Kirk. Published in New York by Harry N. Abrams in 2000. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: What style is it? How is it put together? Is it real or is it a fake? How can I make it look its best without destroying its value? John T. Kirk answers these and many other questions about when. Where, how, and even why a piece of furniture was made. And by juxtaposing genuine works with copies, he shows how to judge the quality and authenticity of antiques to distinguish a fake from the real thing. Covering three centuries of changing styles, this handsome and useful volume details each period's essential traits, offering practical guidance to novice and seasoned collectors alike. The book moves sequentially through major design periods, including ... morethe popular William and Mary and Queen Anne styles, Rococo and Chippendale, Federal, Shaker, Modern, and Revival. Illustrations of silverwork and paintings set the furniture in context, and comparisons with European pieces point out the unique aspects of American design. John T. Kirk is one of the preeminent furniture historians of the 20th century. Winterthur. Which holds some of his research papers, notes- John T. Kirk is a noted scholar specializing in American furniture and the Shakers. His father was a builder and most enjoyed the work of restoring old houses. This stimulated John Kirk’s interest in old buildings and antiques, and eventually he even restored a couple of old homes himself. Kirk became a journeyman cabinetmaker and studied furniture design. He then received his bachelor’s degree from Earlham College and earned a master’s degree in art history from Yale University. He was a professor at Boston University for many years, and retired as emeritus professor of art history. Mr. Kirk has been a consultant curator for several historic house museums and a director of the Rhode Island Historical Society. He was the curator for three exhibits of Shaker furniture

Colonial Furniture of West New Jersey” By Thomas Smith Hopkins& Walter S. Cox. Published by The Historical Society of Haddonfield in 1936. Edition limited to 300 copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: The work of an early collector. And more of a tribute to enthusiasm than scholarship. The authors make no attempt to identify cabinetmakers or even the location a piece was made, but they do present a fairly complete provenance of each piece, most of them having been passed down in the same family since the 18th century. As such it becomes a de-facto study of what well-heeled 18th century families in West New Jersey were purchasing from cabinetmakers in New York and Philadelphia. Book: Antique American Folk Art & Furniture - Keene Collection at Sotheby's 1997
An Interesting Auction Catalog- Important Americana from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. James O. Keene” The catalog to an auction held in New York by Sotheby's on January 16. 1997. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A May 6. 1984 New York Times article about an exhibition of selections from the Keene Collection at the Museum of American Folk Art noted- Academic is definitely not what appeals to this collector, a small, white- haired 82-year-old automotive-parts manufacturer's representative in Birmingham, Mich. He began collecting with his wife Ruth 45 years ago. Mr. Keene attributes his interest in antiques to a love of history that he said began in childhood. Although he and his wife have collected a variety of materials from a score of cultures, their taste in antiques is consistent. They invariably opt for works ... morethat are rich in figural detailing and made by unschooled artisans. The examples of such highly decorative designs in this show include wares in many mediums- embroidered bedspreads, watercolor documents called frakturs, paper silhouettes, carved birds and animals, cast-iron artifacts, tinware, slip-decorated redware and painted furniture. Mr. Keene began buying carvings by Wilhelm Schimmel, a 19th-century Pennsylvania craftsman, more than 25 years ago, long before these naive works were sought by serious folk-art collectors. Most things in our collection have been changed two or three times, Mr. Keene reported. Book: Palley Collection of Antique American Folk Art & Furniture - 2002 Auction

This collection is particularly wonderful for its energy and vitality, as the Palleys were actively acquiring and enhancing their collection up until their untimely deaths. Each piece was acquired to be lived with and enjoyed by their families and friends, and the collection was very much a work in progress, and part of an ongoing evolving process. The Palley Collection comprises a number of different collecting categories within the field of American Folk Art while retaining a central focus on Pennsylvania German painted furniture" DESCRIPTION and CONDITION NOTES: Softcover. 8"x11" 100 pages, 84 lots, color illustrations.
