1760s American Windsor Side Chair
We have enjoyed this American Windsor for over 40 years. Now it's time for new owners to step forward. Notice the great splay on the legs and hand turnings. Long ago it was converted to a rocker(screws can be removed from rockers) There is a very old probably repair to top rail. Own a piece of American history. Local pick up in Chicago's western suburbs. Or it can be shipped if I take off the rockers via Fed Ex. Wait for invoice from me before paying. Do not pay automated invoice from eBay. I have to box chair up and then can give you an accurate shpg charge. My guesstimate is maybe $40 in the midwest and higher on the coasts. My items are from a smoke-free and pet-free home. Please check out my other items for sale. Thank you. IL residents who do not possess a retail sales license need to pay IL sales tax. No echecks please. Please ... moreemail with any Questions you might have. I do my best to describe item(s) as fully as possible. ALL SALES ARE FINAL. The items are used and not in brand new condition.
American Bowback Painted Windsor Side Chair c 1790-1810
Please note. We have a very large collection of additional images of this piece available for your enjoyment below. Description: This listing is for a late 18th to early 19th Century Bowback Painted Windsor Side Chair. Probably Pennsylvania circa 1790-1810. It has a wonderful black paint over another layer of reddish orange, probably also a layer over the original and currently unknown color. The bow back floats with perfect grace, carefully grasping each through-tenoned splinted spindle before diving through the single solid plank pine seat. The seat is heavily patinated, with deep grooves and wear from decades of active use. The wood is difficult to confirm, but by the style and others of similar craft the make up is likely elm and ash. The entire chair sits over four splayed bamboo carved legs, all four of which tenon through the plank ... moreseat before being secured with a splint, each held firmly and perfectly in place with a bamboo carved H-stretcher. This is a most charming chair, in excellent condition with wonderful patina and character throughout, still preserved in its original state beneath layers of protective paint. Measurements: Seat 13.5" wide x 14.5" deep. The seat sits 16" from the ground and the back of the seat is 33.5" high. Condition: Visually Outstanding Condition- These notes on condition are to guide your review of the images below. Though much of it adds to the character of the piece and does not detract. Paint worn throughout. Deep groves and losses in the plank seat. Chips and abrasions throughout. One nail, appears to be modern, on side of chair stabalizing hoop back. Plank seat split with a butterfly joint securing seat from beneath and two screws locking it in place. Chair is structurally strong, but could possibly be too weak to use functionally as a chair. Shipping: Freight Shipping this piece through a blanket wrap driver will cost $150 Shipping a large piece of furniture to your doorstep can be a complicated task. Original American New England Fan Back Painted Windsor Antique Side Chair
Unusual American Windsor Painted Fanback Side Chair Circa late 18th- early 19th Century. Overall outstanding original condition Item# 120012WYO04 Maple: Legs. Stretchers, stiles, spindles Poplar: Seat Oak: Crest rail This is a rather unusual and quite well preserved original American Windsor Fanback style Side Chair. The overall profile striking in composition. The back of the chair is crafted almost entirely perpendicular to the floor, creating a sense of formality about the chair that is distinct. Sitting in it, the spindles give incredible support and even pressure against the back, but there is some discomfort to the cant of the back, where you almost feel like hunching as you sit in the chair. The seat is likewise rather unusual. Crafted of a solid plank of poplar with a backward cant, the surface entirely flat until it builds up for ... morethe spindles. The legs tenon through the seat, but are not joined with wedge-splits as is often found in the through-tenon joinery. Instead, the pressure of gravity and weight of the sitter is used to keep firm joinery of the legs, a quite successful design that has remained firm for nearly two hundred and fifty years. The back is crafted of nine tapered spindles of maple, these flanked by turned ring-and-baluster stiles that tenon through the seat. Each of the spindles peg through the crest rail along the bottom of the crest rail, the serpentine oak rail flowing into beautiful and precise curl-carved ears on either side. The chair rests over uniquely turned maple legs, the rounded taper of the feet somewhat unusual, each locked in place by an H-form maple stretcher with thick swollen turnings. This is a wonderful selection for anyone passionate about windsor chairs. Especially those with distinct variation from the norm. With a grimy early paint, not original, and a well preserved patina throughout, this is an absolute treasure in well preserved and relatively untouched condition(other than the later painted surface) It is a piece you will enjoy in your home for a lifetim
American New England Windsor Hoop Back Bamboo Turned Side Chair c. 1790-1810
Click for a slideshow of detailed pictures! American Hoopback Windsor Side Chair w/ Bamboo Turnings New England. C. 1790-1810 Item# 120009QOE16B Woods: Pine(plank seat) Maple(legs. Spindles& stretchers) Hickory(crest rail) This is a very handsome hoopback example crafted with utmost precision featuring carved bamboo stiles. The steam bent hickory crest rail is perfectly formed. Bombe before concaving in to tenon through the plank seat. The seven maple spindles are graduated, very carefully and precisely carved to swell at each joint where a thin channel highlights the joint to resemble a shoot of bamboo. These tenon through the crest rail, many actually peeking over the rail now from years of shrinking and expanding. The seat has wonderful form, being softly scooped out and shaped, a shallow channel framing the gallery of spindles along ... morethe back. The four legs tenon into, but not through, the seat surface, leaving it undisturbed by anything but the deep and wonderful pitting and oxidization that has become it's patina. Deep in the grooves and cracks, small remnants of the original green paint add to this, leaving a piece of it's history behind. The underside of the seat has more of this dark milk paint, mingled amongst the nearly black oxidization and staining throughout. The maple legs mirror the spindles, though with much embellishment, swelling sharply at each joint and tapering down at the feet. Maple has the wonderful distinction of being crisp and tight when carved, the reason why it is used in most windsor legs- on the bamboo design, this becomes particularly attractive. An H-form stretcher locks the legs in perfect balance. This is a very fine hoopback windsor. An excellent selection for anyone passionate about this form. Crafted in the height of the period, with the remnants of it's original color and undisturbed construction, this is a chair you will cherish and enjoy. If well cared for, this chair will last many generations while still being fully functional for daily enjoyment. Measure

18th Century American New England Windsor Sack Back Arm Chair 1780-1800
Original 18th Century Sack Back Windsor Arm Chair Probably New England Circa 1770-80 Woods: Hickory(arms. Crest rail, spindles) Maple(arm supports, legs and stretcher) Pine(seat) This is a wonderful early example of what has become known as a"sack back" windsor. It's origin is a bit difficult to ascertain without a provenance, but we would say New England. It was very well executed, the bowed crest with a soft curvature, flowing easily into the curved arm rail. Each spindle tenons through this crest rail, each with split-wedge tenon device hammered into the top of each to lock them into the crest. This split-wedge is replicated in all through-tenon joints in the chair. More uniquely, and as a testament to the attention shown by it's craftsman, each long spindle swells at the lower half in symmetry with it's opposing ... morespindle, then tapering impossibly thin at the top. Built to last, not a single spindle has been damaged or broken, despite the very thin profile of each. The arm rail has a soft upward slope, creating an overall backward leaning profile, allowing you to rest comfortably in a slightly reclined position as your arms rest naturally. Supporting each arm is a turned maple arm support, each turned with superior level of skill- if you are familiar with sack back examples, comparing the soft swelling and sharp turnings of the arm supports will certainly set this chair apart from its peers. The seat has a chiseled channel around the spindles, as typically found in this form, giving shape to the ovular shaped seat, formed carefully to allow comfort. This rests over four turned and tapered legs supported by an H-form stretcher, swollen at the medial and smooth along the edges. It has a nice splay to the legs, comfortable and stable while still being quite angular. The finish appears to have once been a rich black over red primer. This is a wonderful find for any collector of pure American antiques. It is fully original in all aspects but the finish, remnants of which are still visible in part

American New England Sack Back Knuckle Arm Windsor Chair, Rhode Island c. 1780
American New England Knuckle Arm Sack Back Windsor Chair Probably Massachusetts or Rhode Island c. 1780-1800 Item# 130102JGG13 Poplar(seat) Maple(legs. Stretchers, arm supports, outside and underside of knuckles) Oak(arm rail. Crest rail) Hickory(spindles) This is a very fine American Sack Back Knuckle Arm Windsor Chair. Crafted in the New England States, probably Massachusetts or Rhode Island c. 1780-1800. It is a high style piece, the six long and tapered hickory spindles tapering through the round oak crest rail, this wrapping in a perfect arch to tenon through the oak arm rail, which continues out to terminate in carved knuckle arm holds. The arm holds are pieced, the oak arm rail forming the primary interior while the rest of the knuckle on the side and bottom are of carved maple, attached to the arm rail with tiny wooden pins. The flow ... moreand precision of these knuckles brings the entire chair's form together, being both bold and comfortable as they splay outward on either side. The arm rail rests upon turned maple arm supports. These with a slightly swollen medial baluster embellished with paired parallel scratched-bead channels crowned and footed with very sharp ring turnings. The oval seat is scooped and carved, a thin grooved channel framing the spindles, the wear of the seat revealing much of the earlier layers of red paint. The legs tenon through the seat in the normal fashion. These with the common ring-and-baluster turnings terminating in a long tapered foot, contracting slightly faster than a smooth taper would dictate in the Rhode Island manner. The H-form stretchers have a soft swell, the medial stretcher with ring-turnings on either side. Perhaps what makes this form so successful is the same thing that has led to some looseness in it's joints: the chair has an action-oriented profile. Leaning almost forward like it is ready to start a race. While a more squared leg splay would be stronger and more well-balanced, this chair was not designed to be a restive form. This is a special piece,

Sturdy and stable for regular use without concern about ruining an untouched period antique- the chair originally was a potty-chair, this having been adjusted at some point in the 20th Century(properly and professionally executed) The result is a very attractive chair that can now be functionally used without the guilt often associated with using a delicate period piece of furniture. It has rather reticent turnings. With mild outlines of what would be bamboo turnings in more fully developed legs. The potty-seat windsor is almost always restored, though often it is done so inappropriately by cutting along the grain to remove the entire front half of the seat, ... morerebuilding the seat and nearly invisibly replacing the previous existence of the potty seat. However, that is the wrong way to maintain the legitimacy of the windsor- the correct was is identified in the landmark work by Charles Santore, The Windsor Style in America" FAQ from page 193) Q. How much does a potty-seat cutout detract from an otherwise good chair? A. Of all the various problems a period Windsor can be plagued with- such as broken or replaced legs. Stretchers, spindles, crest rail, or knuckles- a potty seat is the least serious. For if the potty seat is, or has been, repaired properly, that is, if the original contours of the seat are retained, the design of the chair will in now way be compromised. Q. What is the best way to restore a potty seat? A. Basically. There is only one proper way to restore a potty seat without diminishing the value of the chair, and that is to fill the potty-seat hole and only the hole. Thsi should be done with a round or square piece of wood that is as close to the size of the hole as possible and that leaves as much of the original seat intact as possible. The wood should be the same type as that of the seat, of approximate
American Windsor Sackback Arm Chair, New England poss. Rhode Island c. 1790-1810
Fine American Sack Back Windsor Arm Chair New England. Possibly Rhode Island c. 1790-1810 Item# 110012ERE02 This is a gorgeous piece with a fine oiled patina. The plank seat is a single solid board of chestnut. Carved for comfort and oval in form with a thin channel along the back outlining the gallery of spindles. A crack is growing along, stopped from the underside with a butterfly dovetail joint. Remnants of a green paint over a milky white paint are visible on the underside of the chair, the white almost certainly being the original color for this chair. The steam bent crest rail wraps around the middle seven spindles, each of which tenon through the crest and poke over the top, before completing on either side in a square tenon through the arm rail. The arm rail is hickory with gorgeous worn grains, chamfered along the sides with the ... moreshort spindles and turned red oak arm supports on either side tenoned through and pinned at the top with a split-wedge tenon. The turned red oak arm supports join through the seat. It rests over four ring baluster turned legs with an H-form stretcher. It has a glowing warm patina and outstanding form. In it's current state. It is not suitable for regular use, but upon request we can properly reglue the medial stretcher using hide-glue so that the chair can be used(though somewhat judiciously) Measurements: 22" wide at feet x 22 1/2" total depth(approximate) 15" of depth from front foot to rear foot; 17 1/8" high to seat; 35 5/8" high to crest rail Condition Report: Right arm with patch at first spindle. Left arm first spindle with loss from an old split. Little splatters of white paint. Not part of the original finish. Joints slightly loose throughout- without restoration to firm the joints, it should not be used functionally unless it is used very carefully: we are happy to restore this for you properly using hide glue upon request. Seat split repaired with dovetail butterfly joint. Crest rail with break and repair at the spindle- see pictures. Left

American Windsor Sack Back Arm Chair Early Black Paint, 18th Century c.1780-1800
American Black Painted Sack Back Windsor Arm Chair New England States. Possibly Rhode Island c. 1780-1800 Item# 130008STK12 This highly unusual example of an American Windsor Sack Back Arm Chair is just a delightful find. Covered in it's original worn. Crackled and grimy black paint, the chair remains untouched after centuries of careful use. The steam bent crest rail is pierced along the top, the spindles coming through from below and exposed along the upper edge, this rail finishing in a tenon through the arm rail and locked in place with a tiny wooden pin from the side[one pin missing from one side] The oak arm rail wraps around the entire chair, finishing in handsomely shaped hand rests over turned oak arm supports, these pinned to the arm rail from the side. The six long and four short spindles take root in the solid pine plank seat, ... moreone large ovular board deeply and comfortably shaped. The four legs tenon through the seat, the underside of the seat remaining unfinished with old traces of the plane visible in the uneven surface. Resting over four stump legs with an inverted taper, these squeezing sharply to create unusual stump feet, the chair is locked firmly in place with four oak stretcher bars. The turnings of the arm supports and unusual shape of the legs would suggest Rhode Island origin. As that is the only area we regularly see a tapered foot; however, after much research, we have yet to identify a similar example with enough provenance to solidly attribute this geographically. The"box" stretcher is typically found in rod back windsors, not in sack back forms, again making the chair somewhat of an anomaly for further research. Preserved in it's original condition and with a striking and wonderful form, the splay bold and the stance firm, this is an outstanding find for any serious collector of American windsor chairs. Measurements: 24 1/8" wide x approximately 22" deep x 37 1/2" high to the crest; 17 1/2" high to seat Condition Report: Painted surface is almost c

Windsor Bowback Chair Period American Colonail Era
Here is a period American Colonial era Windsor chair in excellent antique condition. It has a flat dull finish which appears to have never been stained or varnished or painted. This is a great old handmade(armless) chair. And assembled with only wood peg to join its parts, as far as we can see. It still sits very sturdy, even for an adult. This piece belongs to a family friend, and we do not know much about it except that we believe it to be from before the turn of the last couple centuries, and not sure what kind of wood the chairs made from. It appears to have its original finish(unrestored) The seat appear to be some solid, thick plank of wood(with some light splits toward the front from aging and climate) Domestic shipping costs are based on USPS Parcel Post calculated from the estimated package weight and your zip code. I will most likely ... moreshipped these chairs separately through FedEx. Thank you for looking and good luck in bidding!

Price Cut!!! Unique Antique American Sackback Windsor Chair
This old Sackback Windsor chair looks to date from the mid to late 1700s. It is still very sturdy and"citable" It's actually very comfortable. Form the details it looks to be from Philadelphia or maybe RI. I'm not an expert in Windsor Chair origins. So that's just my best guess based on the features. It has nice'knuckled" arms. Rather than the plain paddle type. Seven spindles across the back and two short ones on either side. The D-shaped saddle carved seat is nice and wide and deep. So it feels very roomy. All the wood is in very good shape. Other than the obvious wear that is visible in the pictures. Nothing that can't be touched up it need be. But, after all it's been used for well over 200 years and its going strong! The finish is old. With a nice patina of age to it and is still shiny and warm. ... moreIt invites touching and sitting. The joinery is all tight and sturdy. The great unique feature of this old chair is that at some point in the long ago. It was converted for use as a commode chair. Way back in the day someone used this in their bedroom, behind a screen no doubt, with a chamber pot set on boards beneath the seat. That's just how you did it back in the day. The opening in the seat was subsequently closed up- probably with the advent of indoor plumbing in the 1800s, and the chair lived on. It's a great conversation started for sure. That's why my father decided he wanted it. Now it's time to pass it on to a new home. And continue the legacy of this amazing old Windsor chair. Please. Please ask questions before bidding! Note: Shipping will be via ground freight and will be actual cost. I will use a professional shipper to pack it up and ship it. Final cost will vary. But will be the actual cost, no mark up. The estimate in the shipping section is not accurate- for eBay's sake only. Buyer pays the shipping. Local pickup is also available.
Gorgeous Windsor Spindle Fan Back Vintage Chair Solid Birch Hand Made American
This is an exquisite spindle back Windsor chair. Made of solid birch by a high end boutique furniture maker, harbor house. Not sure when this piece was made, but harbor house has been making furniture since they opened in 1929. So this chair most likely 1940's-1960's. The grain on it. As well as the attention to asthetic detail, give this chair a great look. The grain almost has a 3-D glow to it. Particularly around the top of the back, and the seat. Condition is excellent. All sturdy. Non wobbles or creaks. No repairs. There are a few minor scratches and such, typical for a vintage piece. But overall I'd give it a 9 out of 10 for condition. Just a well made beautiful american vintage chair. Shipping is $89.00. And it ships via greyhound bus. Must be picked up at your local greyhound station. No international shipping. C. 1790-1800 Item# 1406NJY17P An exceptional and nearly untouched example in pristine condition. This fine American Continuous Arm Windsor boasts a very early and deeply worn surface, full of oxidized and ruddy character. The form of this chair, while closely related to that of both Connecticut and Rhode Island, remains distinctly New York in style. More specifically, the formation of the nine-spindles allows a gap between the last spindles and the short arm spindles, a gap that is generally bridged by broader stretching spindles in New England forms. The spindles taper smoothly in an even manner, not with the swollen midriff typical of Connecticut; ... morefurther, the medial stretcher is flanked by a pair of rings, a distinctly New York feature and the overall robustness of the turnings in the legs are infrequently found outside of New York. The stance of the windsor is just delightful, the front legs nearly perpendicular to the ground with the back legs sharply canted, relieving the angle of the back and providing great comfort in the form. Complimented by the skillfully carved shield shaped seat, scooped from a solid plank of Yellow Poplar, the result is a very comfortable and supportive chair that is just as enjoyable for lounging as it is visually striking. The crest rail is steam bent from a single piece of either oak or hickory(not microanalyzed) The spindles tenoned through the crest rail and joined with a split wedge, the arms raised over turned balusters that nearly mirror the profile of the legs. Each leg is perfectly turned with deep swelling balusters over a long tapered foot, the legs and stretchers turned from Maple. An investment grade acquisition. This is a precious find for anyone passionate about American Windsors. Notes and Further Research: American Windsor Chairs. Nancy Goyne Evans, p. 199-201; also see f

Antique Early American Bowback Windsor Side Chair Handcarved Bamboo Turnings
Antique Bowback Chair This is a gorgeous piece of Early American furniture. This is a bow-back windsor side chair. This piece came from the home of a serious 18th century antique collector. Who had a beautiful collection of primitive furniture. The chair features bamboo-turned legs, stretchers and spindles. You can see plane marks on the bottom of the chair where it was hand carved. All of the spindles and the legs of the chair were connected using the through-tenon method. The chair measures 35 11/16" in height. The height from the floor to the top of the seat is 15 1/8" The seat measures 15 1/2" wide by 15 1/2" deep. This is in great condition overall with some small signs of age and use. The chair does have general spots of wear and surface scratches that I believe should be expected on a piece that is more than 150 ... moreyears old. There is a chip next to one of the through-tenon joints at the top of the bow. There is a spot next to this chip where a repair was done- this repair may very well have been made during production. But we do not know for certain. We believe there is a possibility that this chair was painted, stripped and re-finished at some point, but we have no way of knowing for certain. There are remnants of what could be old paint in the tiny cracks and crevices of the chair. Please see pictures for more details. FREE SHIPPING TO ANY DESTINATION IN THE CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES. The style here is Mate's Chair, a type of Windsor chair. From Nichols& Stone's own website, we have this history of the company: It seems that since the first Nichols set foot into the New World. They've been producing fine quality chairs and passing on that skill to the next ... moregeneration. As early as 1762, there was a Nichols Brothers Chair Manufactory in Westminster, Massachusetts, which was worked by bewhiskered Nichols too numerous to mention. As the country grew, the Nichols' chair business grew, too. By 1857. It was already an established company that became the benchmark in craftsmanship. At the turn of the century, the business was moved to neighboring Gardner, Massachusetts to gain easier access to the railway. The second of two fires leveled the plant, but adversity was turned into opportunity. An updated brick factory was opened in 1907 by Charles Nichols, with his new partner Reuben Stone, under the name Nichols& Stone. Having survived these natural disasters. Nichols& Stone continued to expand. By the 1930s, Edmund L. Nichols and Albert Stone had taken the helm. Responding to consumer preferences at the time, they pioneered in merchandising by specializing in Windsor chairs and Boston rockers, building the brand awareness still enjoyed today. Although Mr. Stone left no heir. The stellar reputation of Nichols& Stone had been established by then, and the name remained unchanged. Under the steady leadership of Carlton E. Ni
