The drawer faces are solid Cherry with a nice set of hand cut dovetails. We believe the chest was made right around the area CA 1850-1860. The depression ... moreisn’t very deep and could possibly even just be a natural flaw in the wood that the cabinet maker chose to use anyways because of the unique swirling grain pattern.

Click for a slideshow of detailed pictures! Fine English Chippendale Mahogany Kneehole Desk c. 1740-60 Originality preserved throughout in the hardware ... moreand feet- Only the desk is being offered in this listing. The chair shown is offered elsewhere in our collection Item# 110105PII25 This is a remarkably preserved English Chippendale Period Kneehole Desk. Circa 1740-50. It is crafted of well figured solid single boards of Mahogany on the top and sides- there is no veneer on this desk, just solid boards of full grain mahogany. A simply molded edge runs the perimeter of the top, each corner scalloped. Each drawer is hand dovetailed front and back, with thin oak frame construction and thin oak drawer bottoms- all drawers are fully original and lack any adjustments and restorations to the secondary construction. Glowing hand forged brass hardware adorns each drawer. Appearing to have never been removed from the piece. Inside each drawer, as well as the tiny door in the kneehole area, silver metal locks are secured and functional. Each lock appears to be original, each uniquely cut on the right hand corner for all small drawers- it would appear the craftsman was presented with the challenge of making the lock of his choice fit the small space in conjunction with the pull hardware, and overcame this but cutting the corners of each lock. Hand made screws are visible throughout the lock hardware. While we cannot say for certain if the key is original, it is of the period, hand made and very similar in metal color to that of the locks. Each drawer is lip-molded and slides flawlessly in and out of the desk. Just below the top drawer is a secret drawer compartment. Appearing to be part of the frame design, but actually pulls outward smoothly as an extra hand dovetailed drawer. This is a unique addition for the craftsman to make, as many of these knee hole desks are without such innovations. The wide top drawer pulls out to reveal a full dust shelf. Protecting drawers below from saw dust and other debris as it opens and

English George III Chippendale 18th Century Bachelor Chest of Drawers, 1780-1800
English George III Period Chippendale Bachelor Antique Chest of Drawers Last quarter of the 18th Century. Probably c. 1780-1800 Mahogany veneers& solid woods(primary surfaces) Oak(drawer secondary surfaces) Pine(drawer facings. Case secondaries) Item# 130001LFF27 This is a fine English George III Chippendale Antique Bachelor Chest of Drawers of wonderful proportions. Crafted during the last years of the 18th Century. Probably c. 1780-1800. The deep cognac mahogany color has been well retained, clearly a chest that was protected properly from the damaging rays of the sun, the grains of the wood glowing through years of waxing. It has a well developed patina throughout, and while it does not have it's original surfaces, the finish is early and quite fine. The top projects slightly on all three facing edges. A rounded molding framing ... morethe perimeter and protecting the edges of the veneer. Beneath the top, a thin blade surface slides from the top, a feature identifying this chest as a"Bachelor" chest of drawers- this convenient device was quite popular during the period, allowing the chest of drawers to be used actively as a desk surface for a quick letter or for reading and studying in the evening hours. The blade is crafted of pine secondary woods with glue blocks giving strength to the overall frame, this covered with a brown replaced felt and edged in mahogany veneers with two tiny cast brass original knobs at the facade. Four graduated drawers line the case. These with period circular stamped brass hardware in the original holes(exception with the lowest drawer. Where the hardware is slightly mismatched and holed just beside the original holes) flanking original stamped brass keyhole escutcheons. The drawer face is framed in projecting cockbead molding, the frame dovetailed front and back. Inside of the case, some drawers have partial dustboards, others are had partial dustboards which are now absent and replaced with 20th Century runners on either side. The antique chest of drawers rests over pl
American Chippendale Period Walnut Miniature Chest of Drawers, Poss. Southern
American Chippendale Period Walnut Diminutive Chest of Drawers Possibly of Southern origin Late 18th Century Item# 130102RIG18 This is a very interesting early work of American craftsmanship- an American Chippendale Chest of Drawers. Crafted with diminutive proportions during the fourth quarter of the 18th Century. It features a single solid board top attached to the case with pegs along the rim, this projecting lightly over a distinctive reeded molding wrapping around the three sides. Chamfered columns flank either side of three graduated drawers with molded lips, each with replaced brasses and original locks(top drawer lock is period, we believe it to be original, but it might be a replacement) The sides of the case are likewise solid walnut planks, these almost certainly joining to the bottom of the case with horizontal nails hidden by ... morethe molding- naturally, we have not removed the molding to verify this, but this presence of nailed joinery is evident throughout the case coupled with a lack of dovetails on the bottom board. The backboards are undisturbed yellow pine attached with rosehead nails. The drawer joinery is consistent in the top two drawers. Slightly varied at the back of the bottom drawer. This variation would typically suggest an alteration or rebuilding. But in this instance it does appear to have been crafted as such originally: Top drawer- a yellow pine drawer bottom deeply chamfered to rabbet into the poplar drawer sides. The bottom nailed to the poplar back board with a neat row of four nails; front dovetails are nailed from the sides, rear dovetails are nailed from the back. Middle drawer- a poplar drawer bottom is deeply chamfered to rabbet into the yellow pine drawer sides. The bottom nailed to the poplar back board with a neat row of four nails; front dovetails are nailed from the sides, rear dovetails are nailed from the back. Bottom drawer- a poplar drawer bottom is deeply chamfered(though the shape of chamfering varies slightly from the other two. Note the picture of all thr
18th Century American Antique Pennsylvania Chippendale Chest of Drawers Dresser
Click for a slideshow of detailed pictures! American Chippendale Period Cherry Chest of Drawers Pennsylvania. C. 1770-1800 Item# 120109RPR08 This is a fine Chippendale chest of the period. Crafted in rural Pennsylvania during the years of 1770-1800 of solid Cherry. The top is crafted of two boards, dovetailed along the edges to the side boards, a fine curved molding wrapping around the entire face and sides, projecting over the facade of four graduated drawers flanked by fluted quarter columns capped and footed with turned capitals. The drawers are typical of Pennsylvania, incredibly solid with very thick secondary woods of solid pine, hand chiseled behind the hardware and each with original locks and pulls. The bottoms are hand chamfered, beveled to rabbet into the side boards and nail at the back with iron hand forged nails. The drawers ... moreare divided with cherry dividers, backed by half-depth boards of pine for partial dustboards. Three pine boards are nailed horizontally to the chest, the boards routed to create no gap, beveled along the sides with a chisel and nailed evenly. The chest rests over four scroll cut ogee bracket feet, replaced but almost certainly in near form of the original feet. The proportions and overall flow of the chest are beyond striking. With unusual width. This chest has a sense of presence that is treasured in works of Pennsylvania Chippendale. This is a piece you will certainly treasure in your collection, with a crispness to the fluting and carved molding that sets it apart. American Chippendale Oxbow Reverse Serpentine Chest of Drawers, MA or NH c.1780
Fine American Chippendale Oxbow Reverse-Serpentine Chest of Drawers Probably Coastal Massachusetts or New Hampshire. C. 1780-1800 Yellow Birch Primaries. White Pine Secondaries Bottom drawer inscribed somewhat illegibly"J(or P) D. Item# 110309OPP17 This fine chest of drawers is beyond stunning visually. With a fine refinish and polish that brings each surface to life in a very real way. The use of birch is an interesting rural application, typical to New England in communities that lacked access to affordable mahogany. Many craftsmen developed their own recipes for how best to finish a birch case to look like mahogany- in New Hampshire, for example, Major Dunlap(1746-1792) recorded at length a two-part recipe to"stain wood to resemble Mehagony" The Dunlap Cabinetmakers: A Tradition in Cabinetmaking" The molded top is a ... moresingle solid plank of birch. Not veneered in any way, the molded rim carved of the solid to mirror the flow of the case. To prevent cracking from shrinking and expanding over time, the craftsman affixed the top to the sides of the case on a dovetail joint, whereby the top slides onto the sides of the case using a dovetail along the entire underside. As the board contracts and expands, it does so freely along this joint, which is why after two hundred and thirty years we have a flawless board free of cracks or splits. Both sides of the case are single solid boards. Incredibly wide, dovetailed into the bottom of the case- this is seen from the inside of the case, where score marks are evident along the white pine bottom. The backboards are pine, locked into the case with a mix of cut nails and rose head nails, each of the boards covered with an even dark oxidization The face is composed of four graduated solid carved drawers, each an absolute work of art. The face of each board is cut precisely to form a flawless serpentine oxbow shape, a very difficult and tricky thing to accomplish as a craftsman. They are hand dovetailed front and back, each with matching perfectly executed dov

American Chippendale Walnut Tall Chest of Drawers Pennsylvania c. 1770-90 Item# 130105FAH17 This is a Fine American Pennsylvania Chippendale Tall Chest. Circa the late 18th Century from 1770-90. It is a gorgeous antique chest of drawers crafted of solid walnut featuring a rectangle top crowned in a deep flaring cornice with three small drawers over a gallery of five graduated drawers flanked by fluted quarter-round columns on each corner, resting over original scroll cut ogee bracket feet. The top is dovetailed to the case behind the surrounding crown molding. The case sides are crafted of two solid walnut boards. Each with wonderful tight grains. Each of the three smaller drawers slide easily over full length dust boards, protecting the contents beneath them from saw dust and dirt as they move in and out. Some strengthening has been done ... moreto the interior around these drawers, several boards added to strengthen the structure- these additions have not resulted in any alteration of the case and can easily be reversed at a later date if desired. The five stacked graduated drawers are solid poplar with dovetail construction. Each with chamfered bottoms that rabbet into the sides with nailed back ends(some tacks along the back edge modern) Bail pull brass hardware and plain brass keyhole escutcheons line the face of the drawers. The back of the case is constructed of solid hand planed edge boards secured vertically to the case, these nailed in place with hand forged iron nails supplemented by scattered modern nails. American Chippendale Cherry Bachelors Antique Chest of Drawers c. 1770-90
American Chippendale Cherry Bachelor's Chest of Drawers. 18th Century Replaced period brasses. Feet mostly original w/ repairs and restorations, c. 1770-90 Item# 120010OEY02 This is a beautiful bachelor's chest with fine proportions. Crafted of solid cherry wood throughout all primary surfaces. The case is crafted entirely using dovetail joinery, noting the sides which lock to the top with a half-blind dovetail, covered with a fine molded rim; the bottom mirrors the top construction, and the drawer divider bars dovetail into the face of the chest. These are of only partial depth, not full dustboards, typical of New England designs as it lessened the overall weight of the chest. The facade is four graduated drawers with bold batwing brasses, each replaced using nearly the same holes, the brasses of the same age as the chest. The drawer ... moreconstruction shows exquisite attention to detail, note the channeling along the top of the drawer framing, a design characteristic of Massachusetts(though also seen throughout other New England states) The sides of the chests wear fine brass carrying handles, each of magnificent proportions with original hand forged screws locking them to the chest. They are likely added to the chest, though since the chest would not have had brasses on the sides of the chest to start with this is difficult to prove. The chest rests on scroll cut bracket feet, mostly original with mostly original blocking, the right side of the feet replaced in exact replication of the rest of the chest. This is a gorgeous piece. A visual delight and crafted with utmost attention to detail. The cherry boards have a wonderful jagged flamed grain with just a tinge of the soft red hue associated with a natural cherry. With a clean overall appeal and a deep patina glowing through the high polish finish, this is a piece that will enhance your living spaces. A timeless design with excellent lines, this is a chest your family will treasure for a lifetime. Measurements: 35 7/8" wide x 20 1/2" deep x 35 1/4
American Chippendale Cherry Antique Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1770-80
American Chippendale Cherry Chest of Drawers w/ Fluted Columns over Ogee Bracket Feet Pennsylvania. C. 1770-80 Back of drawer inscribed"Charles Davis" w/ faint illegible inscriptions beneath the top Item# 130206SWE15 An outstanding specimen of Early Pennsylvania craftsmanship. This chest of drawers is one that retains incredible character and history etched in it's worn and abraded surfaces. It's owners have been faithful caretakers of the chest, restoring breaks and losses without in any way altering the chest itself- though the feet have seen great wear, each cracked and broken at one point or another, every aspect of the feet have been preserved in full originality. Typical of much work from rural locations throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania. The chest is constructed using large boards of cherry. The top board is molded ... morearound the edges, projecting boldly over the case, though this is softened by the molding that supports it's transition to the case. Large square wooden pegs secure the top to the case, driven through the top to wedge it into the frame in equal increments along the border of the top. A pair of drawers rest over three larger drawers. Each graduated in size and retaining their original brasses(locks absent) They are crafted of pine secondaries hand dovetailed front and back with a deeply chamfered bottom sliding into rabbets on either side and nailed in triplet with hand forged roseheads at the back of each drawer; along the chamfered edges. Triangular blocks are glued for ultimate strength and longevity(a few replaced, a few absent) The third drawer up from the bottom is inscribed on the back"Charles Davis" in script on the back board of the drawer frame. Flanking the drawers are thick fluted quarter round corner columns, raising the crown molding like supporting pillars; they are in perfect proportion to the size of the case, giving a distinct architecture to the form. The backboards are untouched for the most part, entirely original and retaining almost all of
American Chippendale Walnut Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1770-80, Antique
American Chippendale Walnut Chest of Drawers Pennsylvania. Probably Philadelphia or the Delaware River Valley, c. 1770-80 Item# 130108OSP25 This is an excellent example from the Philadelphia or Delaware River Valley region of Pennsylvania. A fine American Chippendale Walnut Chest of Drawers c. the third quarter of the 18th Century 1770-80. Of quite desirable proportions, the chest has a refined presence with well preserved color in the walnut case. The quality of the chest is self evident, the top with a sandwiched molding wrapping around the rim, projecting slightly over the front and deeply over the back- this allowed the chest to rest flush with the wall despite the thick floor molding. Each of the graduated drawers has a molded lip of the solid. The faces solid walnut, the sides and bottom crafted of poplar: these are hand dovetailed, ... morethe bottoms deeply chamfered and slid into rabbets in the sides; the riven bottom boards run perpendicular to the face, nailed at the back with(mostly) original wrought iron rosehead nails with white pine blocks fitted in the chamfered edges along the sides. Original steel locks are retained in the drawers, locks now absent, the brasses replaced with period batwings- the chest had Federal oval brasses placed on it at one point, that owner drilling new holes very close to the original holes; the current brasses are in those same later holes. The back of the chest is joined with two original hand planed planks nailed around the perimeter. The top and bottom join to the chest with hidden dovetails. Evident in the score marks on the inside of the case. The feet are preserved in almost entirely original condition other than age appropriate repairs(noted below) the form of these ogee bracket feet is above reproach, a fine scroll cut swirl that has robust flare to it and terminates in a bladed edge. The blocking of the feet is intricate and likely the reason the feet have survived in such good condition; large triangular blocks support the thick corner block, these carved to fit

American Chippendale Walnut Antique Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1790-1810
CHEST OF DRAWERS ANTIQUE CHAIRS TABLES BRONZE SCULPTURES FINE PAINTINGS SCHOOL OF ORIGIN SUBJECT LAMPS. LIGHTING AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS. PENNSYLVANIA Late 18th Century. With restorations Item# 1402ZIM15PA At a height somewhere between a mid-size chest and a tall chest of drawers. This highly attractive piece is as functional as it is gorgeous. The top drawer is"faux" in that it is actually a single broad drawer, but crafted to look like three separate smaller drawers- this lends a certain graduated sense of proportion to the form and a surface embellishment that softens the angularity of the shape. This is accomplished by blocking the three"fronts" and sliding a thick piece of veneer half-notched between each facade. Drawer construction is typical to the Delaware River Valley. The grains of the Eastern ... morePine bottom plank running perpendicular to the front, deeply chamfered around all sides, secured with tiny pine blocks around the edges and tacked along the back edge with(mostly) original rose head nails. Brasses on all drawers are period, but replaced. The contents of each drawer are protected from dust and debris from the drawer above by use of a full length dust board between each drawer. The whole of the form rests over scrolled bracket feet. Retaining a nicely developed patina in the shellacked surface. The soothing swirling grains of the solid walnut planks exude a natural beauty and charm that is quite unmatched by many chests. This is an absolutely gorgeous work for anyone passionate about Colonial forms from the 18th Century; while it is not a good selection for the purist. As the piece has seen some significant careful restoration over the last two centuries, all of the work executed with great respect for the form while allowing it to remain an object that can be used actively in the home without concern or distraction. American Chippendale Walnut Tall Antique Chest of Drawers, Pennsylvania c. 1810
AMERICAN FEDERAL WALNUT TALL CHEST OF DRAWERS WITH FLUTED COLUMNS Pennsylvania. C. 1810-20 Item# 410KPP11A A distinct transition into the Federal Period. This fine Pennsylvania Tall Chest of Drawers exhibits the classical architecture of the Chippendale era adapted for the Neoclassical taste of the early 19th Century. Retaining it's original oval pulls, these with roses embossed inside an infinite double loop and entirely untouched feet, this is a particularly desirable object for collectors. The concave crown molding is bold, aggressively projecting over the unembellished case of three small drawers over five graduated full drawers. The sides of the case extend through the feet, making the interior blocking of the feet an integral part of the case and something permanent- much of the reason the feet have survived in such extraordinary ... morecondition. The backboards are untouched and typical of the period with neat rows of square forged iron nails affixing the backboards to the case. Each drawer is of fine craftsmanship. The tidy hand dovetails crisp and perfect, the pine plank bottoms chamfered on the sides and front to be set in grooves along these edges; all drawers are tacked at the back edge with three hand forged nails. Protecting the contents of one drawer is a full dust board, the other drawers with partial dust boards over the first one-third. Flanking the drawers are the deeply fluted Corinthian columns with turned bases and caps so commonly found in chests of this region. As a well preserved and absolutely stunning object of Early Pennsylvania. Particularly interesting for the meld of Federal and Chippendale designs and it's very fine craftsmanship, this is an outstanding investment grade work of art that was built to last and if well cared for will last long beyond our lifetimes. Materials: Poplar(most drawer framing. AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE CHERRY TALL CHEST OF DRAWERS. PENNSYLVANIA In nearly untouched state of preservation. C. 1790-1810 Item# 410JPP11S This is the finest Pennsylvania Tall Chest we've had an opportunity to carry in several years now. The whole being preserved in nearly untouched condition and of a highly refined quality. All primary surfaces are crafted from cherry, this obscured beneath the highly oxidized and worn finish- the surface is very early, if not original with later touch ups. The molding is impressive with a double-cove stepping that allows it to project with an unusual stature over the delicate dentil molding wrapping around the sides and front. Deeply fluted Corinthian corner columns flank an impressive display of three small drawers over six graduated broad drawers. The three top drawers each have practical locking functions, ... morea sprig set in a groove beneath each drawer that must be released from beneath in order to open. These are affixed with a single iron nail and still function flawlessly. Each drawer retains it's original Hepplewhite style ovular pulls and original stamped brass escutcheons with inverted corners, the lip of each drawer projecting in a soft curve. The hand dovetailing is above average. The crispness of the pins above reproach- somewhat atypically, the back of the drawer dovetails onto the sides(versus the more typical alternative of the sides dovetailing onto the back and face) the sides of the drawer with a thin separate strip of poplar under the bottommost dovetail to create a groove for the deeply chamfered bottom to rest within. As poplar is infrequently a broad board, all drawer bottoms are two planks of solid poplar half-lapped in the center. The back edge of each drawer is tacked with a series of tiny square wooden pegs. Noteworthy in the case is the use of square wooden pegs in every facet of the construction- the backboards are affixed with generous rows of wooden pegging along the top, at each drawer level and along the bottom edge. Even the base, base molding
Fine American Chippendale Walnut Highboy Antique Tall Chest of Drawers, PA c1790
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS OVER OGEE FEET Pennsylvania c. 1790 Item# 410QNP11W A bold and impressive object. This fine American Chippendale Tall Chest of Drawers originates in southeastern Pennsylvania, possibly the Delaware River Valley. The craftsmanship is impeccable, the cabinetmaker choosing vivid walnut planks carefully to showcase the most important and striking aspects of the chest. Note in particular the wonderful flowing grains along the sides of the case, the overall horizontal flow of the grain along the front of the drawers lapsing in random swirls and burls of the plank. The case is crested by cove molding projecting over three small drawers, two medium drawers and four broad drawers- all carefully graduated to flow harmoniously together. Noteworthy are the two drawers with patches, not unusual for these cases ... morewith overhanging lips on the drawers- these are particularly susceptible to being damaged when a drawer is closed unevenly or too harshly, as is probably the case with one or both of these drawers. The repairs were done rather competently, the restorer having to carefully choose boards with at least as much figure as the neighboring parts of the drawers. The drawers are embellished with replaced pierced brass hardware. The frames handsomely dovetailed white pine with integral runners mitered to accept the chamfered white pine bottom, mostly crafted of a single huge plank of pine, this tacked along the back edge with iron nails. The drawers are flanked by fluted corinthian columns with turned caps and bases, the whole case resting over very striking and significant ogival feet. They project an unusual sense of strength and masculinity, each with soft scroll cut returns and resting over thin blades. The back of the case shows the simple and tidy construction we expect from the best craftsmen of this region, the triangular rear foot supports dovetailed into the facings for a permanent joint. This is a very fine case. Crafted with utmost precision and care and retaining an ex

Fine American Chippendale Cherry Chest of Drawers w/ Fluted Columns, PA c. 1770
AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE CHERRY CHEST OF DRAWERS W/ FLUTED COLUMNS OVER OGEE FEET Pennsylvania c. 1770. Inscribed"Charles Davis" with other illegible inscriptions Item# 130206SWE15 An outstanding specimen of Early Pennsylvania craftsmanship. The top board is molded around the edges, projecting boldly ... moreover the case, though this is softened by the molding that supports it's transition to the case. Large square wooden pegs secure the top to the case, driven through the top to wedge it into the frame in equal increments along the border of the top. A pair of drawers rest over three larger drawers. Each graduated in size and retaining their original brasses(locks absent) They are crafted of pine secondaries hand dovetailed front and back with a deeply chamfered bottom sliding into rabbets on either side and nailed in triplet with hand forged roseheads at the back of each drawer; along the chamfered edges, triangular blocks are glued for ultimate strength and longevity(a few replaced, a few absent) The third drawer up from the bottom is inscribed on the back"Charles Davis" in script on the back board of the drawer frame. Flanking the drawers are thick fluted quarter round corner columns, raising the crown molding like supporting pillars; they are in perfect proportion to the size of the case, giving a distinct architecture to the form. The backboards are untouched for the most part, entirely original and retaining almost all of their original rosehead nails- these ar
