The lid ... morebeing carved from a single piece of wood. The hand wrought ironwork is beautifully done and in good condition for its age with only a small piece missing from the back bottom corner as shown in the photographs. It retains its original lock, hinges and a key that is likely original and all are in good working order. The lock will only remain in the unlocked position when the key is inserted and turned to the horizontal position. If the key is removed, the lock will automatically lock when the lid is closed. There is a beautifully wrought twisted iron bail style handle on the top for carrying and there is an iron ring attached near the base at each side presumably for tying the box in place when travelling. Please view all of the photographs- the condition is superb for its age however there are some cracks to the wood from age and normal wear and tear appropriate for a chest that is approximately 500 years old. It measures 21 1/2" long. 14" wide and 10 1/2" tall. Don't pass up this opportunity to add a lovely and rare old piece to your collection or your home decor. Beautifully Carved Antique English Oak Coffer Blanket Box Chest
Beautifully Carved Antique English Oak Coffer Three front raised panels are elegantly carved with fine acanthus leaf motif. The 7/8" solid top is made with breadboard ends. The 1" thick sides are panelled and beaded. The back consists of two reverse-raised panels in a 1" thick frame. The skirted bottom conceals a set of four small metal casters. The inside is all open. This piece shows beautiful rich dark brown patina throughout. This coffer took some considerable skill to build and. Although it is an antique with the usual slight bumps, it's excellent condition reflects the care with which this piece was crafted and treated through the years. The hinges and locking mechanism(no key) are solid brass. The top shows a couple of age cracks that are normal for a piece of this vintage. 17th century Spanish Colonial Tooled Leather Coffer Trunk Chest
This stunning 17th century tooled leather Spanish Colonial coffer retains its original hardware and patterned linen lining. The mark of an old cattle brand is clearly visible in the leather on the back of the trunk. it would be great to find a way to trace this brand to the hacienda from which the herd came. The carved claw feet belong to the trunk but are two separate pieces, and serve to keep the trunk up off the floor. While very old, they may have been made for the chest sometime after its completion. Many of the hand forged nails remain but some are missing. The leather is missing in the upper right front corner of the trunk. As can be seen in the first photo, above. Piece is very sturdy and condition overall is excellent. No odors. Fine Items from ALittleUnlimited Description A fine early iron-bound dome top chest in a rare oval form dating to the late 15th or 16th century. The lid being carved from a single piece of wood. The hand wrought ironwork is beautifully done and in good condition for its age with only a small piece missing from the back bottom corner as shown in the photographs. It retains its original lock, hinges and a key that is likely original and all are in good working order. The lock will only remain in the unlocked position when the key is inserted and turned to the horizontal position. If the key is removed, the lock will automatically lock when the lid is closed. There is a beautifully wrought twisted iron bail style handle on the top for carrying and there is an iron ring attached near the base at each side presumably for tying the box in place ... morewhen travelling. It features intricate carving on the front. Chamfer back paneled, HANDFORGED heart shaped handles, hand wrought rosette nails and square nails, dovetailed joints, wood peg jointed which is all typical for the period. The top has some cracks. Antique Hand Painted Oak Sea Chest / blanket coffer c1836
Painted Oak coffer c1836 This is the best'ships Masters' captain or owner) coffer we have seen in the last 30 years. From the historic port of Nantes it is constructed of fine oak rather than the typical pine. The decoration is original and untouched and depicted garlands of flowers with two delightfully naïve canary or oriole type birds. It is impossible to pinpoint its history. They were typically commissioned by ships captains or owners and are usually painted though I have never seen illustrations of such a romantic example. The inference is that it is a marriage piece with the inscribed date that of the union. One can guess it was a gift from a mariner/owner to his bride. The photos do not do it justice it is a wonderfully romantic piece and very effective focal piece for any room. We love it. ANTIQUE SOLID OAK CHEST TRUNK COFFER, EARLY 1700’s
This antique solid oak chest/trunk/coffer came into our family when it was purchased from an antique store in Summerland. California back in the mid 1980's. It was sold to us with the provenance that it is from the early 1700's and was a ship captain's chest/trunk/coffer and was from England. Condition as shown in the pictures is as we received it and it has been well cared for since it came into our hands. It has the original hand forged iron hardware and does have the original working lock and key. The construction is with wood pegs and the main box is made with one piece oak planks, with the front and side decorations placed over that. Overall dimensions of this piece are: approximately 48" long, by approximately 24" deep, by approximately 24" high. Considering that the planks used in this piece are all straight ... moregrain with no knots, it is quite possible the tree the wood came from was very old itself. ANTIQUE COFFER CHEST--CIRCA 1700 $2,475.00..details below by appraiser
Antique Coffer Chest Cira 1700.Brought from Europe by an old friend.Purchased in Denmark many years ago. Hand carved.Carved markings in left and right corners for owner.Appears of English design. Needs Miscellaneous repairs because of age. 55" Wide-22" Deep- 30" High. This is a completely pleasing old coffer chest. Most of it is early 17th century. It is almost certainly English, Jacobean period(Charles I) but there are losses, additions, alterations and replacements. Not too bad for this type and age of piece, so that sounds a lot worse than it really is. Coffers were richly ornamented chests. The interior accessed through the lid, strongly made and with concealed hinges, and used for storing valuables. The carving on yours is a mixture of'gouged' and'modeled' ornament. Very typical of the period. For instance ... morethe lunette pattern along the top rail(above the doors) is an example of gouged carving and the vertical fern pattern up the stiles(the corner posts) is an example of modeled carving, as of course, is the carving on the doors themselves. What is remarkable about this chest is that it has the original owner's monogram and date. Top left are the initials"ANB" and top right the date. 163? which conforms nicely with the period of the decoration. The reason the last number is missing is that the sides were once paneled and the facing edge of the paneling abutted the stiles at the front and would have provided a space for the last letter and completed the edge of the rising fern pattern to match. So what are the alterations: It looks like the top is original. You can see the individual adz marks in the wood on the underside. It looks like it was hand hewn from a single balk of timber. Originally. It would not have had cupboard doors, just two fixed panels. I am not absolutely certain the door carving is original. Many of these had fanciful Victorian additions. Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk Coffer Chest 17th Century
Antique 1667 German Oak Hammered Iron Traveling Trunk. Measures 44" wide by 25" high by 23" depth. NOT a reproduction. My parents bought this over from a trip to Europe in 1971. Extremely sturdy. Very little damage, just on some of the iron and I have the small the piece that is missing from the left bottom, it needs to be reattached. No key. There are two U-shaped pieces that would attach the trunk to a coach in the back. I have the shipping manifest with the shipping date of Feb. 1972 when my parents shipped it from Germany. This is obviously a very heavy piece(I guesstimate well more than 200 pounds) and would need to be shipped by a freight carrier. Very Rare Museum Piece: A 1600s Leather Stage Coach Chest with Ancient Lock(also known as coffer. Trunk, mule trunk, Box etc) This is a very rare. Very ancient Antique Coaching Trunk or Treasure Chest! Authentic coaching trunks were leather covered, not wood, which was the most waterproof material of the day. They typically travelled OUTSIDE on the back of the coach, at the opposite end to the horses. We believe this is one of the oldest surviving examples in private hands. The lock- in itself- is a work of art. Look at that KEY! The two holes of the key have to fit into the two shafts in the lock. It works perfectly. The chest has a number of'feature' scars and ancient repairs. Which add to its character. The condition is- to say the least- remarkable for its age. 1741 18th Century Heavy Carved European Dowry Chest Coffer All Original with Key
This listing is for a truly awesome. All original 18th century European dowry chest or coffer. The face of the coffer has four floral panels. At the bottom of the panels, Anno 1741" is spelled out, giving the date of creation as 1741. The border above the panels is carved with the name Trincke Gerdes. This was most likely a marriage chest, though it could have also been made as a blanket chest at her birth or later as a gift for some other rite of passage. Regardless of its purpose, this chest is an exceptional example. The chest is held together with wooden pegs and nails with mortised details at the back. It has its original heavy cast iron carrying handles on each side. Best of all, it has its original key and locking mechanism, and they still work together. The original till box is also still attached to the inside of the chest with ... morehand wrought iron nails. The till box has a false bottom, but you can access the lower compartment by sliding the mortised side of the box up. As you might expect, the chest has age and use-related wear. The top has a beautiful patina but is nevertheless covered in small scratches and dings as shown. One side of the chest has a horizontal crack where the iron handle put pressure on the wood while being carried, and the other side has a small crack in the moulding under the panel. There is a horizontal crack 1/3 of the way across the first floral panel, diagonal cracks around the wood pegs between the first and second and third and fourth panels, a crack in the moulding under the third floral panel, and a horizontal crack all the way across the tulip design on the fourth panel. The lock is a little tricky, but nevertheless works and cannot be opened without the key. These defects are very common for pieces of this age and style of construction, and as you can see they do nothing to detract from the beauty or functionality of the piece. Antique 1790's Carved Figural Trunk Coffer Mule Chest Dovetails Hammered Nails
Original lidded coffer wood trunk. Circa 1790's. The origin is probably English. The trunk measures about 26 1/4" wide(side to side) x 13 1/2" deep x 15 1/2" tall, the box is 13" tall without the foot skirt. Highly ornate hand carvings with figural bust- very detailed. The single board lid's side pieces are attached by ten large hand hammered nails with two additional nails holding the lock hasp. The exposed nail heads are 11/16" wide. The metal lock hasp is hand hammered with rivets. The metal lock plate is hand hammered. The side pieces are attached by large dovetails. The footed skirt appears to be original to the trunk, but I am not positive. There is a modern repair to the bottom leg in one place. Please note the large and unusual nail head that attaches the bottom skirt to the trunk box. The chest is ... morein very good antique condition with numerous signs of wear and age.
