There appears to be a slight bend in the print near the upper left part of the print. I didn't notice it until I held it in direct sunlight. Entire frame measures 16" by 20" Therese Martin was the last of nine children born to Louis and Zelie Martin on January 2. 1873, in Alencon, France. Up for auction is an antique matted and framed chromolithographed print depicting the early Christian holy woman and martyr Saint Cecilia. Complete with halo around her head. Cecilia is considered the patron- I have an aversion to the word"patroness" that's often used to describe her and other female saints- of music, playing an organ or some other keyboard instrument, one of her attributes, and looking upward at two putti or cherubs showering her with blossoms. Whose origins are a bit murky, like so many of the early saints, the life stories of whom are often apocryphal, peppered with only small grains of truth, see: The Wikipedia article indicates that it seems pretty certain that she was martyred. I've searched far and wide online and in various print sources to find out who the artist of this work- which I had hanging in my room as a child(I think there was a bit of wishful thinking there on the part of my parents. Who had hoped I might take up the piano or organ, though all I did was play, quite badly, the accordion) might be, but my search has been a cold one, so my guess is it was an anonymous European image that became very popular in the late 19th century, judging from the many old prints of it in all sizes I've seen in shops and online. Perhaps it was based on an earlier Old Master painting or print, I just don't know. Whatever, it seems to have been a very popular image, at least in the United States, in the late 19th century and on into the first quarter or so of the 20th. The dimensions of what I think is a gilded gesso or plaster frame are approximately 16 inches by 20 inches. Published in 1906 by the Ainsworth Company as part of the Lakeside Series of English readings. This little book is 35pp. The binding. Cover, and pages are all solid and in very good condition, especially for being almost 110 years old. With Bethlehem being demolished this past year.
