Ducatus Mediolanensis 56 cm x 48.5 cm copperplate engraving. 60 cm x 52 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Augsburg, 1730 We are pleased to offer this exceptional map of northern Italy published by the Royal Geographer(1678-1757) Seutter apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg and eventually returned to his native Augsburg to establish his own map making enterprise in 1707. Seutter's large folio maps are known for their bold engraving style and flamboyant cartouches and this map certainly has both on extravagant display. The map features vividly engraved pictorial topography. Detailed depictions of fortifications at major cities and this example is an exceptionally strong impression. Like his mentor Homann, Seutter's maps were generally not original cartography at all but close copies of earlier Dutch or ... moreFrench maps. Yet also like Homann, the bold style of the German engravers and their fine decorative elements often made a significant aesthetic improvement from the original source map. The cartography on this map is a almost exact copy of a circa 1700 map by the Dutch cartographer Carol Allard(1648-1709) although Seutter did convert the names of Duchies and regions from Allard's Italian to Latin. Despite some minor soiling and a small hole in upper border, this rather dramatic map will make a fine presentation if matted and framed. We begin our survey of the map with the handsome two title cartouche presenting a dual theme of agricultural abundance and martial might: Note road network converging on Milan- curiously the"I" in"MILANO" is obscured which is the second example of this map we have seen with this same"feature" which would seem to indicate a flaw in the plate. Note the enclosed"Parco" to the south- the hunting park where the catastrophic French defeat in the 1525 Battle of Pavia took place as is noted on the map: To get a sense of map detail consider that the distance from Cremona to Verona as seen below measures 17 cm actual

Seutter started his career as an apprentice brewer. Apparently uninspired by the beer business, Seutter abandoned his apprenticeship and moved ... moreto Nuremberg where he apprenticed as an engraver under the tutelage of the prominent J. B. Homann. Sometime in the early 1700s Seutter left Homann to establish his own independent cartographic publishing firm in Augsburg. Though he struggled in the early years of his independence, Seutter's engraving skill and commitment to diversified map production eventually attracted a substantial following. Most of Seutter's maps are heavily based upon, if not copies of, earlier work done by the Homann and De L'Isle firms. Nonetheless, by 1732 Seutter was one of the most prolific publishers of his time and was honored by the German Emperor Karl VI who gave him the title of"Imperial Geographer" after which most subsequent maps included the"Avec Privliedge" designation. Suetter continued to publish until his death, at the height of his career, in 1757. The Seutter firm sadly fell into the hands of Seutter's wastrel son Albrecht Carl Seutter who did little to advance the firm until in own death in 1762.
