Magnificent large size original lidded Zulu Beer Basket hand weaved from traditional Ilala Palm Leaf. It was exhibited at the AFRICAN ART EXHIBITION in SOWETO. Because of their unique tight weaving these baskets were mainly used to store liquids. W hen liquids are stored in them(often home-brewed beer. Hence the name Beer Basket) t he pores start to swell and they become water-tight. The outside then starts to sweat which will cool its contents. These kinds of baskets are highly sought after and are very collectible. Every basket has its unique shape and ... moredesign. This particular basket is shaped wider in the middle. Narrowing towards the top and the bottom. The patterns on Zulu baskets are also distinct and represent different meanings. Triangle shapes mean Masculine Diamond shapes mean Feminine Square shapes(like the ones found here) mean a celebration of fruitfulness. Good rains, good crops. These baskets are made by Zulu tribesmen who are recognized for their skills. Artistry and craftsmanship using indigenous raw materials. The Zulu's are the largest tribe in Southern Africa. By the owner of this basket, that it was made between 1900-1920 by the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, however, I have also heard from a collector of Native-American baskets that it is not Menomiee but most likely Mexican Inca. I am not sure the maker of this basket-It is very tightly woven and in great vintage condition. One small defect on top below rim(see pic) some darker staining(or natural discoloration) on very bottom. The basket has one handle and a ridge on top. Measures 10" across and 8 1/2" high. Very well made It's weaved around like the American Indian baskets. But this is a mask of some kind of animal figure ~ It has ears, holes and the eyes and mouth ~ It even has a string at back to hold it on to your head Measures.8 3/4" high X 8" wide Please if anyone has information on this. Up for your consideration is an amazing unique Antique Hand Wrought Two Handled Weaved Tray. The attention to detail and design of this Primitive Silver Plate Basket is just fabulous. The handles are individually wrapped wires held together with hand made strips of silver plate metal. The old handmade basket measures approx. 10 5/8 inches long handle to handle. 5 inches wide and 3 inches tall to the top of handles. I just love this basket and admire the skill in which it was made. The only mark I could find was an etched X672 on the bottom. I couldn't find anything quite like it listed past or present. The eye-catching basket is in good condition with no cracks, loose parts or repairs. Would be great on a table setting with napkins or in a bathroom holding wash cloths, The possibilities are many. There are small character dents and dings ... morealong with surface scratching adding character and a nice patina. Thank you for looking.
