Antique English 19th Century Soft Paste Porcelain Jug or Pitcher with Gilt Trim English antique soft paste porcelain jug from the mid 1800’s. The ornate soft paste jug is a beautiful lavender-blue and white and features two allegorical scenes on the side panels in relief. One scene depicts a woman holding a Caduceus. The staff carried by Hermes in Greek mythology, and a child sitting on her lap as two young children pull her carriage. The second scene depicts a woman in a carriage being pulled by two dogs as a putto with baskets of flowers hovers above her. A simple border that terminates in a shell form, surrounds both of the scenes. The front of the jug depicts a tree. There pitcher is accented with brilliant gilt trim and decoration throughout and the front of the pitcher has a decorative gilt monogram on the front. The jug is unsigned ... moreand unmarked. There is a bit of faint gilt loss, particularly on the rim, lip of the spout and on the acanthus leaf handle. There is a tight ¼” hairline on the interior where the handle meets the body and another 1” tight hairline on the bottom rim. The hairline does not go into the interior or prevent water storage. No harlines, no chips.all I see is on the main body, are two small areas of glaze blush slight discolor in the firing manufacturing process that are inhereent to the piece in the making. It has always been this way as copper lustre finish does not degrade over time, it remains exactly the handsome patina of lustre, it was born with the day it was made. This example has lovely bright shine for an early period piece, the base is fully glazed over, and unmarked, just the way the circa 1800's items were. Very pretty English porcelain pitcher in lovely condition. Brown floral design on white. May be what is known as transfer ware. There are a couple of tiny glaze pops on the body about 4" below the spout.barely noticeabl e. I don't see any cracks or feel any chips. On the bottom of the pitcher is a rather blurry maker's mark that reads"Porcelaine Opaque. Trade Mark" then a blurry coat of arms below which is a word I can't make out, and below that is the word"England" Please refer to the last photo for a view of the entire mark. This attractive piece features a hand-painted floral motif as well as green accents around the top and bottom rims. This pitcher is English and dates to about the mid-1800's(during the Victorian era) There is a firing line that has become stained inside the pitcher near the handle that happened during the making of the piece- the glaze does go over this line. So it is not a crack(it also does not go through to the other side) Please see our photos below. This piece is in great condition for its age! There is a very fine hairline crack where the spout meets the top rim that measures about 0.5 inches. There is some crackling to the glaze. Particularly around the top of the handle. Up for sale is an antique porcelain Neo-Classical pitcher. This has a Greek or Roman design on two sides. Very similiar to many of the wares that you see that came out of England in the 19th century. The marks on the base are the letter H in black and the numbers 42044 in orange. This measures 7 7/8" tall and is 3 1/2" wide at the top and 4 3/4" wide at the base.
