CONDITION: Very good though bears evidence of a very neat. Professional repair. Minor scratches and scuffs consistent with use and then burial in soil. DETAIL: This is a very handsome. Complete second century A.D. Roman glass perfume bottle(or“unguentarium” which possesses a light iridescent burial patina with purple, pink, blue and green highlights. Most Roman glass vessels recovered complete(intact or repairable) are between 1½ and 3 inches in size– this one obviously exceeds the high end of this scale. However though complete, in a sense it is not intact. The glass perfume bottle was broken, whether in ancient times or perhaps when it was excavated, as there is a fairly clean break toward the bottom. The repair however seems to have been made with bitumen(tar) which would indicate that the repair was ancient. Some of the bitumen has been lost, so there is a small hole in the side of the bottle. But it appears to have been repaired and reused in ancient Rome– a rather uncommon find. Small jars. Pitchers, unguentariums, jugs, bottles, jars and flasks like this were used to contain aromatic oils, perfumes, medicinal ointments, and cosmetics. It is not to say that the Romans did not use larger pieces of glass on their tables such as bowls and cups; and even larger containers for transporting foodstuffs; because they did. Here I have a Beautiful vintage green glass perfume bottle with opalescent dots. Coin Spot pattern. Missing the atomizer, most got hardened and were thrown out. Marked on the bottom: Made De Vilbiss USA in a silver tone ink. The glass is a soft. See through green glass, the"dots" are opalescent. When a black light is turned on the glass looks almost clear and the"dots" are yellow, this shows there is Uranium in the glass. See the photos. DeVilbiss had many companies that made his perfume bottles. Including Steuben, Imperial, Cambridge, Tiffin, Fry, Libbey and Vineland Glass Works. His network also circled the globe. The perfumes were categorized with a simple letter system, Series A, these were the less expensive ones that had a paper tag. This is why you will find DeVilbiss bottles with no name. It is unknown who the maker is but it is c. early 1900's. The pattern is called"Plume Twist" by the author who features this bottle on page 200 of their book ~ William Heacock's book titled"Opalescent Glass From A-Z" printed in 2000. It is so lovely and to me almost looks like the"ice feathering" you sometimes get on your windshield in the winter. The gold tone atomizer top is shiny and heavy with only very light wear. Since there is no makers mark or stamp I am not certain but wonder if the atomizer might not be 24K gold plated( The internal plastic tubing is intact and original but discolored from prior perfume. At this time it is very clean ... moreinside and out. No chips. Cracks or repairs noted. I have added a new wine colored bulb for you. When I squeeze the bulb strong puffs of air do come out so it appears to be in working condition. It is 3 3/4 inches tall and the base is 1 3/4 inches wide with the mid-section of the bottle being a little wider than the base. Antique Blue Opalescent Bottle with blue and white painted enamel flowers with gold leaves and trim. The stopper is marked 124 and the bottom of the bottle is marked 2. Measures with the stopper 5 1/4" tall without 3 3/4" Measures 9 3/4" around the widest part. Condition is vintage with the gold trim and leaves worn. Tiny flea bites on bottom of stopper. Up for auction this evening is a lovely perfume atomizer a DeVilbiss Fenton Opalescent Atomizer from the 1940's. The condition of the glass appears to be excellent. No label attached. Stands 3 3/4" tall and 2 3/8" wide at widest point. The top I believe is gold plated with some aging but not bad. The atomizer has hardened over the years but all in all, a great find.

Over the years. IPBA Archivist, has answered many questions about perfume bottles, but the most frequently asked questions have been about IRICE. She has decided to write up a report on what is known about this company which we are pleased to publish on this website. The company started as a jobber or importer of various vanity items in the 1920's ... morein New York. The head of the company was named Irving W. Rice and he gave an abbrievation of his name to the company which appears on the distinctive silver and blue foil labels ever since- IRICE. The company still exists today in New York and every Christmas if you go to a drug store and look on the counter there will be a display of Irice atomizers. The company never made the items. They were importers and jobbers. So the perfume atomizers and bottles spanned a wide variety of qualities and countries. Irice brought in boxcar loads of Czechslovakian crystal before World War II. During the war. Irice used American companies and then after hostilities were over, the company began importing again, but this time from West Germany and the labels reflect this. Today most of the sources are in the Far East in Japan and later in Taiwan. Irice is located in New York City at 15 West 34th St. and continues to supply vanity items and perfume bottles to America.

This perfume bottle is in perfect condition without chips and cracks. The stopper has a small manufacturing defect. Please look at the penultimate photo.
