antique carved lion head pediment with brass ring; demon towel holder
This is a great old lion head carving. Probably 19th century, that has a brass ring to use as a wall mount holder; extremely detailed carving makes this not want to be cluttered by anything hanging on it at all, but your choice; maybe a fine linen towel? It is 6 3/4" tall, and 2 1/4" wide. Top shelf extends 1 5/8" total depth about 2 1/2" After searching for a while, I finally found the seam; brass ring is 1/4" and seamless; the bottom part of the lions jaw is cut just 1/4" slice out of the wood, then the solid 2 1/2" across brass ring was slipped in, and the slice was returned very skillfully, a long time ago. Patina all matches beautifully, it is the original slice of wood.

This is a superb 19thc oak wood pediment which is finely carved in relief with the head of a female to the centre and with a cornucopia holding fruits to either end. The attention to carved detail is really excellent. The female's head is carved to the centre of the pediment. She wears a crown/decorative headwear and her hair flows back away from her face. In an old two family house, about ten years ago. The place was originally a single family that was VERY shoddily converted to a two family. I used contemporary off-the-shelf interior door trim to finish the new door. I've held onto this piece of mill-work thinking that I might want to reproduce it someday. As time passes that's looking more and more unlikely and considering that old architectural objects like this are now considered very hot ... moredecorative elements I've decided to part with it. It's an original door pediment or head casing trim and is roughly 100 years old. It has several layers of peeling paint over what appears to be the original shellac finish. I removed much of the curling. Loose paint. It could be stripped and refinished or left as is! It would look great with the addition of a shelf and perhaps some metal coat/hat hooks or wooden pegs on the flat. Vertical surface area of the piece. It would also make a fine head or topper piece for a mirror or recessed niche or it could be used as intended above a door or window! The possibilities are endless!
