Antique Payson Mfg Co. 360 Degree Cast Iron Wooden Wheel Furniture Casters
PLEASE READ ENTIRE DESCRIPTION AND TERMS BEFORE BIDDING! FREE SHIPPING! Up for auction are Five antique/ vintage furniture cast iron wooden wheel casters(5) total Circa 1880’s. Recovered from an antique furniture carpenters inventory. They are we believe to be Payson Mfg Co. 360 Degree cast iron casters with wooden wheels. An extensive research of the web produced none like it and only two similar larger casters made by Payton. The casters are stamped P Mfg Co. Nov 22 81 as best as can be seen. But the full name cannot or was not included on these. Two of the five still have the original wooden wheels; the other three have fallen off. They are unique because the three 1/4” mounting holes are hidden within the skirted swivel base which holds the disc shaped Babbitt bearings. The mounting screws are screwed in via the underside access hole ... moreas it rotates around(see pictures) The wooden wheels can be replaced because casters of this era were“pinned” in place. Remove pin insert wooden wheel and reinsert pins blunting the ends. The dimensions are as follows(approximately) Overall measurements of each caster is 2- 3/4' tall by 1– 1/2'wide. Mounting Plates are 1– 1/2" in diameter and the stem insert is 1” tall. The wheels measure 1– 1/8” by 5/8” and provide 1– 3/4” overall clearance furniture. Good condition for their age. All spin freely without extensive rust issues. They were cleaned and lightly oiled and can be easily restored for authentic antique furniture restoration, but some want to maintain the antiquity and current condition so we are leaving restoration decision to you. Then the caster is inserted into the insert where it snaps in and stays without falling out of the furniture leg when the furniture piece is lifted off the floor. The hardwood wheels are about 1 1/8" in diameter and about 5/8" in thickness. The stems are 1 1/2" long. 1/4" in diameter with a knob at the top that is 5/16" in diameter. These casters are very similar in size and look, but they are not exactly alike. Condition: These casters are used. None of the wheels are cracked or broken or have flat spots. Two of the wheels have no wear on the axle and two have some wear. But are still quite usable. All my items are from a nonsmoking environment. This auction is for a set of four old/new stock. Round, ball-type casters and sleeves. The round ball measures 7/8" diameter and the stem is 1 9/16" long. The sleeves are stamped"PAT APR 5, 1892" so I believe these are very old and extremely hard to find. These casters are unused with just a small amount of surface rust on some of them. Lot of 4 Matching Antique Casters with Wooden Wheels
We've got another set of four matching antique furniture casters. This is a large. Hard-to-find set with wooden wheels and cast iron yokes/stems. They are the kind of casters that were commonly used on large pieces of furniture like bedframe legs. The wheels are about 1 5/8" in diameter and 11/16" wide. The metal stem that fits into the socket of the furniture is 2 3/4" long from tip to base. About 7/16" in diameter at the base, and about 1/4" in diameter at the tip. The center of the wheel is about 7/8" offset from the centerline of the stem. The stem on this type of caster generally would fit into a metal socket that is fixed inside the furniture leg. We do not have the metal sockets that match with these casters. These are nice. Antique casters in very good condition considering their age. There is a little ... moresurface rust on the iron parts. The wooden wheels turn freely on their shafts. Two of the wheels exhibit pronounced and attractive wood grain. One wheel has a small flat spot that is about 5/8" long. One of the other wheels has an even smaller flat spot and the center hole in this wheel has become enlarged to about 5/16" hard to measure) We tried to orient the flat spots on the wheels so that they are visible in the high resolution photos that accompany this listing.
