Here is a Victorian penny lick glass which does not hold too much as it is quite shallow and is probably a half penny lick it is just under 4" high and in good condition with no damage. I am listing this very old Victorian Penny lick glass. It is in good condition and is free from chips or cracks. It measures approx. 3.5 inches high. 1.75 inches accross the base and 1.75 inches wide at the top. I bought is some years ago from a lady that said it used to belong to her Mother and she bought it when she was young from an Icecream place in London. Ice cream vendors on the street would sell small ice cream portions in these little glasses and once the ice cream had been licked from the glass. The glass would then be given back to the vendor to serve another portion to another member of the public. These were eventually banned from being used due to hygiene concerns and the first wafer cone was first used in c1904. There are 3 sizes of glass they were sold in. 1/2 pence, 1 pence and two pence with this ... morebeing the deeper 2 pence version. The glass measures approx 2 1/2" tall. In very good condition with the expected wear including scratches and scuffing though no apparent chips or cracks are present. It may benefit from a light clean. A tall late 19th century Victorian clear glass two part mould penny lick ice cream glass with thick glass pedestal stem.Circular pad foot base and long funnel shaped bowl- the thick glass disguised the fact that the actual bowl was very shallow. Glass penny licks were used to serve ice cream.Mainly by street vendors,at a cost of one penny per serving.Once the customer had licked the glass clean it would be returned to the vendor for reuse frequently without washing.Penny licks were replaced by wafer cones at the beginning of the 20th century because of hygiene problems,consequent illness and spread of disease. From a collection of penny licks that I have listed for sale on eBay- this one is second left in the photograph of four penny licks. A pair of Victorian'penny lick' thick ice cream glasses. These would be used by street vendors who would sell ice cream in the glasses for one penny. The customer would eat the ice cream and then return the glass to the vendor. These glasses. Made with a thick glass to disguise the actual amount of ice cream in them, would then be washed quickly and used again. Not surprisingly they were banned in London in 1899 for hygiene reasons. These glasses have thick bowls with some air bubbles in them but are in very good condition with no chips or cracks. They measure 3.75 inches in height and the bowl diameter is 2 inches. A squat late 19th century Victorian clear glass penny lick ice cream glass with thick glass pedestal stem.Circular pad foot base and circular shaped bowl- the thick glass disguised the fact that the actual bowl was often quite shallow. Glass penny licks were used to serve ice cream.Mainly by street vendors,at a cost of one penny per serving.Once the customer had licked the glass clean it would be returned to the vendor for reuse frequently without washing.Penny licks were replaced by wafer cones at the beginning of the 20th century because of hygiene problems,consequent illness and spread of disease. This lick has a larger than usual capacity with a large letter" T" scratched on the base to denote it was a tuppenny/two pence lick for a larger serving of ice cream.
