History of Asafo frankaa Asafo" companies" were military organizations of AKAN formed by young FANTE men in order to protect the state( Town) against local enemies and by the ASANTE people. Each side of the flag shows a mirror image. The materials used to make this" patchwork" flags were mostly imported cloth. The Flags were used during the installation of a new Asafo Captain. During festivals, funerals of a companies member and during other traditional events. After the independence from the British the Union Jack was replaced with the Ghanaian tricolor flag. It was a military organization that was formed around the late 1400’s. As a military organization they were involved in wars as well as inaugurations ceremonies as they played a very vital role in politics and the balance of power. Each company had its own flag- the flags were commissioned at the installation of new captain of the company. The flag were made from imported cloth and the appliqued design were often drawn on paper before being transferred to the flag. It does have a few holes and some light fading and discoloration. This item comes from a celebrity home filled with amazing Native American and western antiques.
