Made of bronze, cast in the form of a mythical lion, depicted with its jaw open, showing fangs, a horned head, a scroll mane, scrolls on its shoulders, and a scroll tail. Its back is adorned with a foliate scroll decorated candlestick. This was probably made for use on an altar. The underside is hollow cast. This candlestick measures 9.4 cm in length and 9.1 cm in height. It weighs 239 grams. The condition is generally excellent, without damage or repair, the bronze has the patina of age. I'm not sure of his age, but the patina built up on the surface of the brass suggests it has quite a bit of age to it. I think it has been cast using the lost wax method, with the body cast in two pieces and joined together and the candlestick part added separately too. A FINE NEW MEXICAN ALTAR/CHURCH CANDLESTICK, RARE FIND
NEW MEXICAN ALTAR CANDLESTICK Height: 36 IN Width( at bottom) 12 in presumably 20th C I acquired/purchased this about 17 years ago in Las Cruces. New mexico at a roadside chapel which I found by pure luck and was being dismantled by the parish church which maintained it. Shows wear and overpainting. See pictures. You can see that the paint was applied over a gesso ground. Each of the four bases are offset a little to the left-this seems intentional. On one of the legs three holes are just to the right of it. It is painted in the same colors often found in New Mexican religious art-indigo blue and a subdued red. Would be a great decorative accessory! Baroque? Italian? Wood Altar Candlestick Holders. Primitive Hand carved. There does not appear to be anything that I can tell is'wrong' with them, the usual'worm' holes, and crack which does not appear to be structural, and appears to all be consistent with age. The wood hand carved altar candlestick holders are about 18 1/2" tall and the candle spikes are 2 inches tall. These belonged to my parents who are in their mid-90's. I believe these were purchased in Italy when their were there in the 1970's, and before 1977 as I have a dated picture of my Dad holding them. Very small remnant of gold flake. The pair was FUMIGATED WITH HOUSE, so NO TERMITE WORRIES.

vintage 19.5" altar candlestick from a church - gothic - heavy weighted brass
Please click on the large photo to open the window showing all the large photos. There are currently 12 photos. This terrific vintage candlestick came out of an old church. I believe it is brass though I don't know how to tell for sure. A magnet does not stick to it. It has neo gothic style with gothic arches and quatrefoils. It is weighted on the bottom and very heavy. This was clearly used and there is some wax around the top and dribbled on the base. I have not attempted to clean or polish. I don't see a mark.
