This sculpture may be identified with the Dogon people of Mali who are known because of their important production of ritual figures and staffs made of metal and used in variety of ceremonies. Brass and iron figures are identified with Dogon myths of creation. As the blacksmith was one of the first primordial beings known as Nommo created by Ama who is one of the major Dogon deities. The identity between the Nommo and the blacksmith creates a bond and an identity that gives the blacksmith special powers which include the ability to call down rain so important in Dogon life. Animal figures are also part of the Dogon myths of creation. Animal participation is annotated in the story of Dogon mythology. These animals are associated to the creation for the roles they plays in the mythic time. Dogon culture greatly values these animals. They symbolize chieftainship. Power, and wealth. Figures such as this would be placed in the Binu sanctuary, a sacred shelter where the Dogon keep objects of magical importance. This sculpture reflects the artistry, power, and authority of the Dogon blacksmith, as it was he who also carved the well-known wooden sculptures used by the Dogon. Numerous age cracks, chips, overall condition fair. Thank you and please view my other items. BACKGROUND The Dogon people live on a large plateau. With most of the villages situated on cliffs to the north and the east. According to Dogon oral tradition, the tribe settled in this area between the 14th and the 15th centuries, after escaping from the Mande kingdom. Legend has it that a snake led them to the cliff at the southern end of the plateau, where they overwhelmed and usurped the local Tellem and Niongom populations. The Dogon livelihood is based on agriculture concentrated in fields at the edge of the cliff, where water is scarce, but enough for occasional irrigation. Dogon social and religious organizations are closely interlinked and out of these arose four principal cults which accounts for the richness and diversity of Dogon culture. Dogon art is extremely versatile, although common stylistic characteristics- such as a tendency towards stylization- are apparent on the statues. Dogon figures are predominantly associated with the ancestor cult. They are carved either for personal or family use or, if they commemorate the foundation of a community, are worshipped by the village. Offered here is a fascinating display of Vintage AFRICAN ARTIFACTS- 3 Spears and 3 Arrows purportedly from the 1800's- that was previously an exhibit in the DIEHM NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM in Fort Wayne. Indiana. Mounted with fine brads onto painted Chip Board to achieve a rustic look, the exhibit consists of a 5' 6" Flat Bladed Spear with metal blade and banding, a 44 1/2" 3-pronged Barbed wooden Spear for birds, a 4' 5" single-pronged wooden Barbed spear for fish, 2 metal tipped arrows without fletching(25 3/4" and 27 3/4" long respectively) and a 40" long metal tipped fletched arrow. Note the fine detail in the attached photographs. Particularly note the extensive hand decoration of the metal blade and metal shaft affixed to the large spear. Old Arrows Possibly Congo African
I am selling two very old arrows. I am unsure of their origin. But from research online and eBay, I feel they may be Congo African. Both arrows are about 25" from their bases to their tips. The arrow with the spiked tip has some minor splitting in the wood( hairline) I can post more detailed photos of this area) Again, I am unsure of the origin of these arrows, but a collector or enthusiast may know more about them. In my opinion, they are in overall good condition; the feathers on the arrows are in good shape. I accept PayPal for payment. Returns are at cost to the buyer. antique African aboriginal wood bow 5 reed arrows iron points
Here is a nice lot of antique African aboriginal reed arrows with a wood bow. There are 5 arrows. All with hand hammered iron points and 4 have hand fletched flights with carved knocks. The arrows vary in size and design. Very possibly from different tribes. 2 arrows have single feathered flights tacked to one side of the arrow and carved designs all the way around the same area. One is simple bands. The other more ornate carved designs. They are possible kill marks from the hunt. The bow is over 6' long and has the original string on. Though it is broken. The inside of the bow has a long split in the riser section and the leather bands around it would probably be used in case it splits further to hold it tight. I am not sure if this is an intentional design or not. The bow only flexes slightly. The arrows are 31" to 34" in ... morelength. Varying in both point and shaft length. Primative African Ivory Coast/Cameroon/Nigerian Quiver with Arrows
Available for Auction: One Tooled Leather Quiver. Antique. West African in Origin. Nigerian/Cameroon/ Ivory Coast. Circa Late 19th-Early 20th Century. Includes 14 arrows: 9 small arrows and 5 larger arrows. Quiver is of tooled Leather with a bone ring used to carry the quiver. A small leather ball toggle is attached at one point of the bone ring, and a rope to carry the Quiver at an opposite point on the bone ring. Leather is braided around top and bottom of Quiver with fringe extending from braided areas. Most of the fringe in missing or broken. It is pliable but fragile and dry and somewhat brittle. Carving or tooling of the leather covers the entire Quiver. Bottom of Quiver is partially missing and was stuffed with old newspaper to keep arrows in place. I have not done any restoration to this piece since I acquired it. There are 14 Arrows ... morein total that came with this Quiver. 5 larger arrows and 9 smaller with barbs and assorted points. All arrows are metal with bamboo shafts. See photos for details. Measurements: Quiver: 23 1/4" in length. 3" dia. 8" circumference of body of Quiver. Bone disc measures 4" in diameter. This auction is for a lot of 2 very old and well made arrows from West Africa. These are from the Sahel region. Likely from Niger or northern Nigeria. Similar arrows made by Hausa people and related groups. Age unknown, from different collections. Likely early 20th century but could be earlier. Darker colored arrow is older. Finely made forged iron points, long shanks, small lanceolate tips with large chiseled barbs. Barbed arrows would have been used with poison for fighting and hunting. Points attached with sinew. Bamboo shafts. No fletching/typical for region. Light colored arrow has self nock reinforced with sinew. Other arrow has damaged nock, may have broken off. old/vintage lot of 2 central African Congo Congolese hunting arrows spade tip #6
This auction is for a lot of 2 old arrows from the Congo basin. From same collection. One arrow missing point. The other point is an exceptionally well made spade-shaped hunting point designed to cut on impact and cause massive bleeding without excessive penetration. The socketed point is attached to a wood foreshaft. Which is in turn attached to a papyrus shaft. Shaft is almost square or octagonal in cross-section. Other arrow also has wood foreshaft. Plant fibers used to reinforce joints. Multiple dark-colored bird feather fletchings attached with fiber. Deep self nocks. Measure 30"33" long. Point is 3 3/4" by 2" wide. Deep, dark patina on both arrows. In fair shape with very tattered feathers, some probably missing and coming loose. Shipping includes reinforced packaging and appropriate insurance. old/vintage lot of 3 east African Tanzania KAMBA hunt poaching poison arrows #1
This auction is for a lot of 3 old arrows from Tanzania. Similar to arrows made by the Kamba culture. The two barbed arrows were collected in 1928. The other arrow is from another collection. Finely made steel points, two with symmetrical sagittate points, one with a large leaf shaped broad head. Barbed arrows would have been used with poison, other for small to medium sized game. Points attached with sinew. Wood shafts. Three vulture feather fletchings neatly attached with sinew or fiber. Feathers on arrow with blade attached with strips of plastic from a grain sack. Decorated with red and black paint. Measure 23"24" long with 4"4 1/2" points. Some rust and discoloration on steel points. Feathers worn and tattered from age but still in fair condition. ANTIQUE SOUTH AFRICAN JU'HOANSI SAN QUIVER AND POISON ARROWS SET
Hello and thank-you for viewing my listing! Up for auction today is an ANTIQUE SOUTH AFRICAN JU'HOANSI SAN QUIVER AND POISON ARROWS SET. The quiver and arrows as well as the tools used to make poison arrows are in great condition with no chips. Cracks or other damage and the animal hide quiver strap is equally intact, showing very minimal wear. The quiver is made from acacia root and the arrows are made of reed, quill and metal arrow heads. The arrow heads are attached to the quill with wrapped sinew and then attached to the shaft with sinew as well. The arrow heads are also quite small, about the size of a fingernail. The quiver is about 24" long and 1.5" round while the arrows average about 16" in length and the length of the tools vary from 11" to about 16"
