This map has listed the railroad companies along with the area in which they cover. See top scan. This map is genuine. Not a copy or reprint. It has a few minor handling flaws as to be expected in a map this age and large. This map is starting to split down the center seam. This hand colored map(the size of the picture) is about 10" x 7 1/2" on a page that is about 13" x 10" It is in very good condtion with some age toning. It is suitable for framing and would be an excellant gift. 9th edition. The Scholar's Edition The landmark ninth edition. Often called'the Scholar's Edition' was published from January 1875 to 1889 in 24 volumes with one index volume. Up to 1880, the editor was Thomas Spencer Baynes— the first English-born editor after a series of Scots— and W. Robertson Smith afterwards. The 9th edition was a critical success. And roughly 8,500 sets were sold in Britain. A& C Black authorized two American firms. Charles Scribner's Sons and Little. ... moreBrown and Company. To distribute the Britannica in the United States. And roughly 45,000 sets were sold. However, several hundred thousand pirated copies were also sold in the U.S. Which still did not have copyright laws protecting foreign publications. Geographe du Roi a London. 1768 38 cm x 31 cm copperplate engraving. 42 cm x 43 cm sheet size, modern hand colour, Chez Durand, Paris, 1772 We are pleased to offer this scarce original example of one of the more bizarre cartographic publications of the 18th century- the map(Phillips. 627, no. 1195; Wagner, 342, entry 637) of an imaginary Northwest Passage supposedly compiled by Spanish Admiral Bartolome de Fonte(aka Fuentes) as he"discovered" the passage in 1640. In fact, Admiral de Fonte did not exist and the entire account was a fiction published in a short-lived English publication known as"Monthly Miscellany or Memoirs of the Curious" in 1706 and probably ... morewritten by its editor James Petiver. On his passage, the self-styled"then Admiral of New Spain and Peru, and now Prince of Chili" described vast inland lakes and rivers, meeting other ships using the passage and a"Nation of Pygmies" inhabiting the region towards the North Pole. Incredibly, this transparent hoax was taken as genuine by some of the leading geographers of the 18th century with as a particular advocate and maps showing the fanciful nonsense of"L'Amiral de Fonte" were published as serious cartographic works for a number of decades. This example was compiled by the English Royal Geographer in 1768 and here translated into French and engraved in 1772 by none other than for inclusion of the plate in the great Encyclopédie of Denis Diderot. Quite a sought-after map. This well-preserved example exhibits very fine hand colour work and will make a handsome presentation if matted and framed. Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique. A work consisting of six volumes with a total of 378 map sheets drawn as globe gores on the so-called Flamsteed or modified conical projection at a unprecedented 1:1,641,836 scale- the whole of which assembles to form a globe of 7.775 meters in diameter. Originally published in installments. The completed atlas offered no less than the largest picture of the earth's surface that had ever been recorded. Despite ... morea sale price of 600 gold francs(~ $4000 in 2009 USD) the atlas was a commercial success. Selling hundreds of copies to subscribers ranging from the crowned heads of Europe to Alexander von Humboldt to the Pope. 1730 Seutter Map NE US "NOVI BELGII" New York CIty Inset View Historic Important
Novi Belgii in America Septentrionali 59 cm x 50 cm copperplate engraving. 61 cm x 54 cm sheet size, original hand colour, Augsburg, 1730] 1740 We are pleased to offer this scarce example of the iconic and important map(McCorkle#730.5) published by the Royal Geographer(1678-1757) of what would become the northeastern United States with an inset of the famous Restitutio view of New York City. Seutter apprenticed as an engraver to Johann Baptist Homann in Nuremberg and eventually returned to his native Augsburg to establish his own map making enterprise in 1707. Seutter's large folio maps are known for their bold engraving style and flamboyant cartouches and this map certainly has both on extravagant display. The map is closely based on the 1673 map published by the Amsterdam engraver Huych(Hugh) Allard(1625-1691) which in turn was based ... moreon the similar maps published in the 1650s by Jan Jansson and Nicolas Visscher. With the basic cartography originating with and the chart of 1614. This so-called Janssonius-Vischer series of celebrated maps established an outline and set of placenames that became the model for cartographers for over a century. As to the historic importance of Seutter's map. This is the first map in the series to show by means of printed lines the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Wonderfully decorative with a flamboyant cartouche depicting natives and slaves in a procession bearing gifts to George II who is attended to by classical gods, the map features a veritable menagerie of wildlife and domestic animals throughout. This well preserved example will make an important addition to any collection related to colonial America. We begin our survey of the map with Seutter's version of the view of"Neu Jorck sive Neu Amsterdam" which Allard introduced to his plate in 1673 replacing an earlier view dating to the 1650s showin a much smaller city. You are looking at a map from Walker’s International Atlas. The maps themselves were the product of George Cram. A well know map publisher at the turn of the century. Worldcat.org does not list any 1892 editions. Each map measures 17 1/2 X 25 inches. The maps in this listing are in good overall condition. With minor showing of handling.
