Pollard oak is a cultivated variety of oak grown in sections of Europe for its particular figure of grain. The small limbs of this tree are cut into rounded heads close to the tree and as the tree grows larger the stunted heads are included in the wood growth. Then when the tree is harvested for lumber these heads produce burl or knots which form very unusual grain figures in the wood which are highly sought after by high end furniture makers. Victorian 1875(?) (Marble?) Top Side Cabinet, Bedside Chest Nightstand poor cond
This may be earlier than the Victorian era, I'm just guessing on 1875. The poplar drawers harken back to an 1840-ish desk I sold two weeks ago that had similar dovetailing at the corners as well as a chamfered fit of the drawer bot. I want to say this prob had a marble top originally. I have a piece of marble(in 4th pic) but it needs to be cut to fit and is not part of this auction. The pine board top is not fastened down. The door panels are loose and not fastened down. There is no key to the lock in the RH door. There is no bezel on the keyhole but the lock. Is in place in rear of door. Door hinges are set securely and work smoothly, Doors close as they ought without binding. Drawer works smoothly. All joints/joining of wood appears to be tight(except for the loose front door panels) The nightstand is solid and not wobbly(except. For ... morethe fact that it's missing a rear'foot' see pic) There are no deep scratches or splintering or. Chipped out portions of the wood. If successful bidder would like the marble slab. I can sell for $25.00. I had the marble listed for sale awhile back on its own auction but it didn't sell. It would cost $80.00 to ship to West Coast so prob only practical to buy if planning on picking up nightstand here at 19525. I can deliver nightstand in my station wagon at cost of 89 cents per mile one way(I eat the return mileage) plus tolls. In other words. If you live 100 miles away. Say in south Jersey, it would cost $89.00 to have this delivered to your door plus 5.00 bridge toll to get across the Commodore Barry bridge. Weight is 43 lbs. Gorgeous Solid walnut antique nightstand Own some American History.no doubt made by an American country craftsman The hardware has an Eastlake style.it is beautiful Circa 1850-1895 Beautiful original drawer ring pull.notice the fine details in the back plate.the pull has a great naturally aged& worn patina! I restore fine antiques and this lovely nightstand/table was in need of some meticulous restoration.I restored it from top to bottom and added some custom touches along the way! The legs are no doubt hand made/turned.they are beautiful What I love the most about this piece is the rich walnut wood.the wood is actually about 350-400 years old considering when it was cut down to make this table.the graining is spectacular I restored the finish entirely by hand. Just like when it was made.I hand scraped and sanded the failed original finish.then ... morehand rubbed many, many coats of varnish which showcases the wood and protects it as well. The hand scraping and sanding is labor intense but provides the most stunning look when restored! The finish is silky smooth but you can still feel the walnut grains/pores just as I designed the finish! I s trengthened the original loose top with screws& added the twelve antique walnut pegs around the top.it looks superb and add architectural detail! The stretcher/rung which connects the stretcher/rungs on the lower part of the legs I custom made and added the antique walnut pegs over the screw holes.the table had a shelf on the lower portion originally.it was missing& I added the custom stretcher/rung.it blends in perfectly with the overall design of the table The drawer slides like silk since being fully restored. We believe this piece to have its original finish as well as the original marble top and features substantial carved columns that flank the cabinet door with picture frame moldings and raised panels of oak accenting the door. This piece rests on four large bun feet and with the back being chamfered as well as the bottom side of the drawer. Its solid and tight with no issues noted other than normal wear from age and usage. Being offered for sale is this lovely Flamed Mahogany Empire ~ Victorian Marble Top Washstand with Key circa 1860's.This beautiful 19th century washstand features gorgeous flamed mahogany.A beautiful marble top with a shaped backsplash and marble shelf, its original drawer pulls, with early hand-cut dove-tailed ends on the drawers, a chamfered back,inside of doors and drawer bottoms and casters intact on all four feet. This 19th century washstand measures 39 1/2 inches tall to the top of the marble backsplash.31 inches tall to the top of the marble at the front,33 inches wide and 20 1/2 inches deep and weighs approximately 100 lbs. The marble shelf measures 31 1/2 inches wide by 4 inches deep. The marble top appears to be an old replacement and has no chips or cracks but some slight staining as common with old marble. There is an area ... moreup under the left shelf bracket that has been"colored in" with white perhaps to cover a stain and blends very well and not very noticeable at all in my opinion unless very close inspection. The lock is intact on the doors below but the key provided just aids in opening the doors and doesn't work the lock. On the right side there is a small square opening about 1 inch where there once was a pull out towel rode but its no longer present. Just a splendid 19th century transitional Empire into Victorian era washstand that would be a great addition to a Victorian bedroom as a bedside nightstand. Please view.
