The color purple was traditionally the color of royalty, and was also associated with the planet and the Roman God Jupiter the“Lord of Gods” of the Roman pantheon, also known as Zeus to the ancient Greeks) Consequentially Amethyst has been used since the dawn of recorded history to adorn the wealthy, as well as royalty. Ancient civilizations prized the stone more than many other gems which today enjoy more recognition and value, including sapphire, ruby, diamonds and emerald. For some time in the ancient world, amethyst was valued equally with the diamond, and only royal families were lawfully entitled to own and wear the stone. Amethyst was used extensively in the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil. The first century historian and naturalist Pliny wrote that if amethyst were worn round the neck on a cord made from dog's hair, it would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Celebrating our historical legacy here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst pear from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. Exported to Russia, the gemstone was hand crafted and faceted by a 19th century Russian artisan, part of an heritage renown for the production of the elaborate gemstones and jewelry of the Czars of Medie

It would afford the wearer protection against snakebite. Several centuries later the fourth century Roman Catholic Priest Hieronymus(also known as Saint Jerome) reported that eagles placed an amethyst in their nest in order to protect their young from the danger of snakebite. Another Roman account of the gemstone relates that(third century Roman) Saint Valentine owned a ring set with an antique amethyst carved with an image of Cupid. Amethyst was used extensively the ancient Mediterranean world for carving intaglio gemstones and seals, particularly by the ancient Greeks and Romans. And in both ancient Greece and Rome rings of amethyst set in bronze were worn as charms against evil, and wearing the stone was believed to protect female wearers from seduction. Celebrating our cultural inheritance here's a very large. Very clean, 19th century faceted amethyst oval from the Devonian lava beds found along the coast of Angus Country, Scotland. The jar is the size of a very large melon– almost the size of a soccer ball. What’s really remarkable is that it is seemingly about 2,000 years old and is entirely intact, with no damage aside from the normal little dings and bruises one would expect with an earthenware household utensil which was used and then spent twenty centuries buried. There are simply the normal blemishes(bumps and dips) one expects with earthenware crudely fashioned by hand. Notwithstanding these blemishes(entirely normal for an ancient earthenware jar such as this) it has emerged from the soil in wonderful condition! There are some light soil accretions which could be brushed or washed off if one were gentle and careful. Although it is probable that this specimen is much older. It is also possible that this piece might be a revivalist imitative produced for the European market of the 18th or 19th century. It is widely known that Chinese porcelain and other ceramic artwork was quite popular in Victorian Europe. Carrying Chinese porcelain from China to Eur

A rare complete collection The neolithic period began around 6.000 years ago when humans first settled down and began farming. They continued to make tools from flint and some kinds of tools, such as scrapers for preparing hides, stayed the same. But the neolithic also saw the introduction ... moreof new kinds of stone tool Chipped stone tools are made from materials such as chert or flint. Radiolarite, chalcedony, basalt, quartzite and obsidian via a process known as lithic reduction. One simple form of reduction is to strike stone flakes from a core using a hammerstone If the goal of the reduction strategy is to produce flakes. The remnant core may be discarded once it has become too small to use. In some strategies, however, a flintknapper reduces the core to a rough unifacial or bifacial preform, which is further reduced using soft hammer flaking techniques or by pressure flaking the edges. More complex forms of reduction include the production of highly standardized tools, which can then be fashioned into a variety of implements such as scrapers, sickles and microliths Please see photos for exact condition Low start and no reserve I aim for no less than 5 star feedback on all my items. Superb Neolithic Stone Age Polished Ceremonial Axe - 3000 BC
A beautiful. Rare and published Scandinavian Neolithic polished stone axe from a prominent 19th century collection, dating to around 3000– 2000 BC and uncovered in Gotland, Sweden. Polished stone axes such as this striking piece were the masterpieces of the Neolithic world, representing the very highest standards of craftsmanship. Highly polished from an attractive piece of dark stone. The austere, spartan form combined with the jet black colour produces a powerful, almost domineering effect. This tool dates to the north-west European Neolithic. The period when societies across northern Europe began to adopt agriculture. The magnitude of the changes during this era cannot be overstated. The transition from hunter-gatherer societies towards a more sedentary, farm-oriented existence is one of the most critical moments in human history, ultimately ... moreenabling the rise of civilization. It was stone axes that paved the way for this development, cutting down the ancient forests that had supported hunter gather societies for thousands of years and allowing the growth of crops and grazing animals. Given its extraordinary economic power in transforming the landscape and with it shaping and supporting life in the Neolithic. It is not surprising that the stone axe was revered and endowed with special status. Many highly polished stone axes of quite remarkable beauty have been found which were clearly never intended to be used as practical axes, but as decorative or ritual objects. This wonderful piece is just such an artefact. A rare and precious item charged with meaning. It would have been revered by those who looked upon it. As these axes are widely spread throughout Europe, it is likely they were passed as gifts between men of power and status over huge periods of time. By the time this axe was deposited in the ground, it may well have already been centuries old. The use of stone tools persisted in Scandinavia for far longer than the majority of Europe. As such. The societies of the late Nordic Neolithic produced some of

EUROPEAN STONE AGE ARTIFACTS BY PALATINA AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEED Description Collection of flint flakes from the Early Neolithic Linear Pottery Culture. Dating 5600/5500-4900 bc. and sherds. A few with decorations from different Middle European Neolithic Band cultures. All together is around 2000 gramms! The Linear Pottery culture or(German) Linearbandkeramik(abbr. LBK) Bandkeramik, Linear Band Pottery culture, Linear(Band) Ware culture, Linear Ceramics culture, Danubian I culture of V. Gordon Childe, Early Danubian culture or Incised Ware Group is a major archaeological horizon of the European Neolithic(stone age) flourishing ca. 5500—4500 BC. The heaviest concentrations are on the middle Danube, the upper and middle Elbe, and the upper and middle Rhine. The LBK represents the advent of agriculture into this part of the world. The LBK at ... moremaximum extent ranged from about the line of the Seine—Oise(Paris Basin) eastward to the line of the Vistula and upper Dniester, and southward to the line of the upper Danube down to the big bend. An extension ran through the Western Bug river valley, leaped to the valley of the Dniester, and swerved southward from the middle Dniester to the lower Danube in eastern Romania, east of the Carpathians. Danube lands near Vienna, by Johann Christian Brand, ca. 1760The LBK did not begin with this range and only reached it toward the end of its time. It began in regions of densest occupation on the middle Danube(Bohemia, Moravia, Hungary) and spread over about 1500 km along the rivers in 360 years. The rate of expansion was therefore about 4 km per year, which can hardly be called an invasion or a wave and does not offer much support to theories of population replacement. A model of gradual colonization is perhaps most apt. The LBK was concentrated somewhat inland from the coastal areas; i.e. it is not evidenced in Denmark or the northern coastal strips of Germany and Poland, or the coast of the Black Sea in Romania. The northern coastal regions remained occupied by Mesolithic
