According to Theophrastus, who made a thorough study of fragrant substances in an essay entitled concerning odors, balanos was the least viscous and by far the most suitable oil, followed by fresh raw olive oil and almond oil. Most likely a spear head! The length is 103 mm! Wonderful thick patinized marble-like flint! The Mousterian industry appeared around 200.000 years ago and persisted until about 40,000 years ago, in much the same areas of Europe, the Near East and Africa where Acheulean tools appear. In Europe these tools are most closely associated with Homo neanderthalensis, but elsewhere were made by both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens. Mousterian tools required a preliminary shaping of the stone core from which the actual blade is struck off. The oldest existing evidence of human habitation which has been found are the settlement sites of the reindeer hunters from the Bølling period, 12,500-12,000 BC; this was the first warm phase at the end of the last ice age. During the next warm phase, the Allerød period, 11,800-11,000 BC, the first open woodland appeared and reindeer, elk and giant deer became the staple diet for a growing population of hunters.
